Underwater Footage of Whitefish and Burbot Ice Fishing (Lake Simcoe)

The snow finally let up up and I was able to bring my camera gear out with my on Lake Simcoe. It was a great day, I was able to capture lots of whitefish and burbot on the Aqua-Vu underwater camera.

I dont have an underwater camera, but your video is so helpful in understanding fish behavior of what they might be doing down there when they show up on my vexilar, and how to get them to strike. I think I'm overworking my lure sometimes.

Tip for grabbing those slimy whitefish out of the hole is to use a pair of tongs. Like the kind you use in the kitchen or on the grill.

Use a spud to make a ramp into your hole. You can slide the fish right out of the hole and won't end up with the Vibrato snagged in your finger. Great video. I wouldn't try this without and underwater camera, it dramatically improves your chances of success.

Nicely done and congrats on the burbot. I’ve only seen one once on Simcoe, was in about 6 inches of water sitting on the weeds at the mouth of the river was a monster. I’m struggling this year on the ice. Maybe this weekend I’ll get a little luck.

@@ActuallyAndrewFishing Last summer(probably mid June), I took my kids out on the canoe and we paddled the south end of cooks bay. Carp everywhere, we were in about 1ft of water. Couldn’t get them to bite as I think they were spawning. The previous year, I went out on my kayak looking for bass with little luck but found some big carp. Wasn’t prepared for them but had some soft plastics and a peanut butter granola bar, rubbed some PB on a chunk of the plastic bait, tossed it out and within seconds had a carp on… just as quick it broke me off.

Great vid as always! UW camera is next thing on my wish list. You can gather so much more information with a camera than any flasher or scope. Watching their behaviour and getting a 100% species identification will improve your catches! Besides that it's just the most entertaining way to ice fish. It's sight fishing in deep water. Cheers!

Thx dude. For half of this video I was using an independent mic. You can see it attached to the strap on my bibs in some shots. When I got home and listened to it, it sounded no different than the GoPro so I figured I’d save myself the time and didn’t end up using it

Hope you like the burbot... people rave about how great they are and target them around here, but I tried one we got fishing whitefish years ago & really don't care for it; all the rest I've caught have been released since. Jealous of that whitefish - I'd take that any day, plus I haven't caught any in years. (A commercial fisherman moved in & it's not even worth driving up to fish for them anymore. =( Before he moved in, we were nailing them... 90 minute drive and 2 of us have managed 2 fish total out the last 6 trips combined.) Why did you set up facing west??? A tip - if you take a spud and flare the bottom of your hole, making it look like an inverted funnel, it'll direct your fish up through the hole. Only takes a minute and when fishing perch at least, I lose far fewer fish at the hole when shaping it like that.

That is a really good tip, thanks for sharing that! It's funny, I was wondering how long it would take for someone to ask why I faced west. That took no time at all! I simply do it for lighting inside the hut, its much softer and not direct which shows up better on camera. That's tough to hear about the tough whitefish bite from the commercial fishermen, where abouts are you from?
