You use your top 10 pick to go all in right now...they're trying to have their cake and eat it too, and it's already causing undue drama with Cousins' agent saying what he said about the pick. Now if Cousins struggles for a couple of games, the fanbase is going to be demanding Penix play...but then what do you do with the $200 mil? Prior to the Cousins signing, I was one of the biggest supporters that they need to draft a qb for the future. Again this was when everyone was on the Justin Fields trade hype train. Mariota was never the answer and idk what they saw in Ridder to draft him. I thought Kirk and Heinicke were Falcons QBs for now, but now they added Penix for the long term.

Its a smart move. To be able to develop this talent without pressure of starting is so big. Its how it used to be done. The best qb now even sat a year to develop. Cousins is used to the drama of the league. He can be the shield. Qb is most important and they have it.
@nicholasriley57777 ай бұрын
I'm warming up more to it; this was a future move plain & simple. They saw an opportunity to take a talented player at a position they need to secure for the next decade, at a spot they probably won't see again for a couple years at least (be it due to actual season results or potential NFL punishment due to the tampering investigation). Hopefully they can still grab quality players at other positions of need & develp them from there.
@alexerickson63317 ай бұрын
Could have traded down a couple spots and stacked up massive picks and picked him later most likely. Kirk is gonna be there 2-3 years minimum and Penix is already like 24.

Easily the worst pick in the draft. How do you sign a guy for almost 200 million and then draft a QB IN THE TOP 10. Say penix fell in the 2nd round and they drafted him there I think people wouldn’t be on the falcons case as much. They could’ve gotten Kirk another weapon that they don’t need and still wouldn’t have been as bad of a pick.

I think this gives Penix time to get his mind and body ready for a NFL season. He can also learn a ton from Cousins either way its a win win for Atlanta. You'll have a pro bowl qb and a young qb who is more comfortable with the playbook with weapons all around. The division is up for grabs and you have talent even though its mostly on offense.
