5:18. “Let’s talk about the issues that Colin is trying to call attention to…”. That’s exactly the point. The method of protest calls most of the attention to the method itself, (and conveniently it calls attention to Colin Kaepernick just as he’s becoming irrelevant), and the issue itself becomes secondary. That’s Ray’s point. So no I don’t think Shannon did a good job in thinking he can just say “let’s talk about the issue” and missing the point, which is that’s exactly the problem with the method of protest. It doesn’t get people talking about the issue. Not only that but associating an issue with a method of protest that itself almost universally offends most people isn’t a good way to garner support for the issue.

Ray Lewis was a coward then and he's a coward now. The reason why he didn't take a side on the Colin Kaepernick kneeling thing is because he was concerned about Baltimore putting a statue of him in front of the stadium. If a man is not going to stand up for something, he's not good for anything. Power to the people

In my ex-girlfriend's hometown of Noble, Oklahoma there were two police officers who responded to a call about a snake in a tree. They shot the snake in the tree not with a Shotgun but with their 9mm handgun and the end result was that a 5 year old child got shot in the head. He was fishing with his grandfather in a nearby pond. None of the officers involved were ever arrested or fired from their job. All of them "promised" to resign and never work as a cop again. One of the 3 officers is now working for another police department. If a regular citizen had accidentally shot the kid, he or she would be in prison. Let that sink in for a moment.

That's not true. Only if the person was using the gun illegally would they have gone to jail. There are many people that have accidentally killed someone with their car in a traffic accident and are not in jail( Brandy Norwood being one). Rarely are people convicted and go to jail for accidents, even tragic accidents. Malice or illegal action has to be proved.

I’m an Asian guy (weird how I feel like I have to use that as my defense) but I tend to disagree with Shannon. He is speaking on personal experiences of racism. I think that’s different to saying that America as a whole is racist. I’m Japanese and even here, racism exists. To expect to completely eradicate every type of hate or bigotry seems like a rather impossible task. Especially when people know that’s your weakness.
@caseywhite8142

@@88godson88 I agree with you. Even though I’m half Japanese it’s still cool to see someone else from my ethnic background speak on these types of things. I feel that although racism is still a huge issue today, not ALL of America is racist and the majority of us love each other equally, regardless of skin color. However, that goes without saying that racism is still big in many parts of the United States.

I though voting in a black president these issues were gone. Funny how when he was elected no one in the black community was saying anything about injustices. They were dancing and partying in the street. They voted him in on his color 99% of all the blacks and what did he do for you. What happened to the hope and change. You only voted for him cause of his color and not his character. If the whites did that you would be very upset.

I think the purpose of pointing out black on black crime is really a statement towards BLM, in other words if it's really about black lifes then why do they not address black on black violence and find a solution to that problem as well as things like police brutality. honestly to me they would be more legit if they tackled issues like that also rather it all be about the police, especially in situations where facts are left out... I've heard stories that really make certain instances bad on the cops then find out more facts that say to me the killing was justified because it truly was in self defense... if a cop unlawfully kills someone then there should be severe concequences for that cop, but at the same time the BLM community shouldn't go crazy everytime someone is killed, get the facts and really look at it and ask yourself was this a unlawful killing, if yes then fight for justice, but if no then let it go

chris- BLM is just the NAME. the whole "if black lives matter, why..." stance irrelevant. Tamir Rice getting shot by police has nothing to do with a turf war in Chicago. Plus BLM has one focus. There are MANY "stop the violence" groups around. Damn near every black athlete is involved with one. Asking BLM to shift focus away from their purpose is the equivalent to asking Susan G Komen Breast Cancer awareness to focus on Alzheimer's when there already other groups doing so

Do you think Blacks enjoy talking about being discriminated against, being shot and killed without any repercussions . If you think racism is dead then just read some of the online comments and you will come to understand that it is alive and well. I have been successful and have done everything "you" say we should do to be assimilated in this society and I still face racism. The same racism I faced as a child when my family was told that we could not eat in a restaurant but we could pay for some food at the backdoor . Well I pay my taxes for the right to be an equal citizen of this country . That includes not putting up with veiled threats as you have written here. You are the type off person who sustains bigotry.

Maybe a part of Kaepernick's protest is that the flag does not now represent what US soldiers have fought and died for. Lewis is missing the crucial idea that one's personal integrity must precede patriotism. If your country does not represent the values you stand for, then what are you being patriotic about?

Know that game already This country was built on the subjugation and exploitation of (Black, Natives, snd Asians) without compensation to the Melanin Rich People. Now, following Nazi Germany, People have been corralled into concentration camps called Ghettos. With subpar education, schools with no books, zoning or ordinances to keep poor people out of rich neighborhoods to get a decent education. Yet we still survive fighting each other for meager resources. We know what our problems are in the hood. Don't need Race Soldiers (posing as Cops) killing unarmed black people.

You clearly missed the point. Kappernick explained his point and views and he said he was not disrespecting the military or the soldiers who fight for his rights....he was clear on that. BUT whitey is quick to say stuff like....he is a terrorist, he is disrespecting the flag etc.....that is the denial. Just as whites say blacks are racist too....which is impossible by definition. People of color can be prejudice but due to "conceptual fidelity it is impossible for any minority especially black people to be racist. I was raised in Sicily and since I was dark I was and will always be considered north African.....I know this topic and I went to great schools in America thus I learned how whites twist arguments they are loosing. Diverting people from topic is a very old trick and when folks stop giving in to it we will be a strong united nation. Call BS if you want too, I for one do not care. I choose to educate myself before i speak because I was raised by strong dark tan people who had lived here would be considered Ni***rs. Besides that narrative is so fallacious and bullshit for a # of reasons. For 1, people have been killing each other since Cain and Abel aka real brother on brother crime. Sadly people will always kill others. Especially of the same ethnicity because were grouped together thanks to gentrification. Im not saying we shouldnt address it but saying we need to stop it before addressing police killings is like saying wait until pigs fly. Its just a way of avoiding the issue.

He needs to speak like he is educated on the matter so his knowledge will show in interviews instead of claiming a country with a black president, black attorney general, black congressmen/women, black judges, black lawyers, and black cops are oppressing blacks with little facts while pulling the race card. The police brutality issue deals with all of us, not just blacks. It needs to be pointed out, but disrespecting the country isn't going to unite us. Neither will not sticking up for whites and other minorities being murdered/brutalized by police. It seems like just a knee-jerk reaction from him by what he see's from the media then what is really happening. Also, where is his response to black on black crime that claim more innocent black lives then ANYTHING else? Shouldn't that be more of an issue?? He isn't a spokesmen for fixing this. This is all for media attention so he can stay in the spotlight rather then fade into obscurity while sitting on the bench.

I love how everyone just assumes it's racism. black cops are 3.3 times more likely to shoot a black man than a white cop. in Baltimore there were six cops involved three of them were black and so was the police chief. please explain to me why criminals getting killed while committing crimes is always blamed on racism.

I'm not going to disagree with the argument I just want to share my point of view, as a white man because I was from the poor side of town I was constantly harassed, pulled over, searched, held till I was late to work, held till I was late to school, and so on under the term suspicion. What turns me off and limits the ability of any stance is when it's made under the flag of racism. It's not just blacks getting treated this way and to make your stance that it is you just defeated yourself.

The Jewish ran media is destroying and dividing us all mane. No one can wake up and see this. poor whites do experience some of the same things poor blacks go through. What is the single most threat to the wealthy elites? Unity among the poor. Easy. So what to do with that populous. easy, divided us through social and economic means. They have used television to divide us and before television it was paper propaganda.

United We Stand Divided We Fall. I'm not going to act like I don't have racist tendencies but I'm not going to allow my opinions to cloud my mind to being blind to the truth. We are all children of God and created equal. Now it's time to unite and stand as one against our true enemy, the establishment. This country has had some rough roads but it's time for the people to take back it's power over government, government was suppose to work for us not control us.

Why can't blacks do the same? Or is it that they wait for it to be given to them? Be honest now. Because I know plenty of minorities, myself included, that did not wait for the government or society to give us anything. We went out and worked hard & went for what we wanted. I for one joined the Army, served my country, got my GI Bill, went to school, got my degree & I have a great career now. So, I jst want to ask for honest answers, why can't blacks do what you told "lonnyfloyd80", and that is "You could get different friends or get a better job"?

Shannon was spot on concerning the matter of the racial divide in America, and i agree with his take on Kaepernick's position. Kap has every right to do what he did, the way he did! If he gets fired, oh well; free speech isnt free. Bringing the Vet's into it blurrs the argument. The conversation isn't about Vet's or the Flag, its about the black experience in America. Race shouldn't make anyone uncomfortable, but it does. That's why I also appreciate Skip's ability to empathize, but most of all, his willingness to LISTEN. Redress of grievances cant occur if no one listens. And just because one party doesnt listen, does not mean there is no grievance. Thank you Shannon, and thank you Skip for showing us how to have a conversation about race in America!

Yes but the media circus surrounding the protest kinda made it a “flag issue” or “disrespecting the anthem” which it wasn’t. It was protest for and in defense of African Americans and the struggles they face. Ray is entitled to that opinion but I think it’s not accounting for the true purpose of the actions of Kaep.

I agree that African Americans are still unequal in many ways and still have injustices and as badly as some get treated it is not on the same level as the Jews in nazi Germany. There aren't any concentration camps around. Things do need to change and I agree that we should change them but it does feel like we've been going on in circles and haven't seen much change for a while. And I say for a while because America has progressed since slavery and segregation. We are going in the right direction, it's going to take time but we've only gone up since the beginning

being half black and half white ive seen some fucked up shit and have had some stupid shit done to me but i was raised to know, that if you work hard enough for anything you can achieve it. racism does exist not just for black people but all races, white people need to open their eyes and put themselves in our shoes and really think "how would it feel if this was done to me or my family" and black people need to stand together and not be killing each other over stupid shit like wearing the wrong color on the wrong street. also we as black people need to understand that we are NOT entitled to everything just because our was enslaved by whites and blacks. work for something hard enough and you can achieve it.
