To be fair, "The writers obession with making every superhero a sex freak is holding them back creatively" is also a problem with the original comic

I would actually say it's the main problem in the comics

The comic was even worse in that regard.

I guess the issue with Sister Sage, as is with most "superhuman intelligence" people in fiction, is that its extremely hard if not impossible to conveive how an intelligence higher than our own works. This makes it so, by definition, superhuman smart characters are contrivances, and their intelligence generally is more a form of "plot knowledge" masqueraded as smarts, rather than actual higher intelligence. After all, a higher intelligence can see "patterns" we cannot, which would seem chaotic to us, and so, its not like the writter can (normally) use patterns they themselves dont see, they either just make character do random things for no reason but the plot bends to make it seem reasonable; or more literally, make a character that knows the plot. This isnt inherently bad, and i think that, albeit its a general problem when writting these characters, in the way you could see time travel and dimension hoping as eternal contrivances; theres degrees of how they are applied that makes them work better or worse.

Yeah, you have to design plot around super-smart characters, and it can be done so it not feels like "bending plot to their random actions" but rather "damn, that make sense and did this all along!". But this is hard, just like, yes, with time travel, multiverse and other elements that call for very careful construction of the plot. But when arrogant writer just toss them in like "ah, it will be okay" and proceed to forget about this elements when they stop being handy for the plot, it looks stupid Eliezer Yudkowsky advise to write smart characters (even just smart, not super-smart) in the way that they have "extra turn" at the stage of planning the story. So you plan the plot, considering actions and interests of every character, and then think again about how smart characters would react to actions and motivations of other characters in this plot, and edit it considering how smart characters changed their plans because of actions and plans of other character (and you also have to write way and moment when they acquire information about plans of others of course but information gathering is one of the priorities of any smart participant of anything anyway). So they will feel more smart because not only they come up with good course of actions to reach their goals, but they also included plans of other characters in it, subverting or using them to own advantage. This will be much more natural if written as such from the beginning than incredibly contrived "But this was this plan all along!11" twist at the end of movie after protagonist gone through every sort of BS most of which was pure random so if it was antagonist plan then it was unreliable as hell. Because this is what happens if "but he predicted it!" from apparently smart character slapped on top of already written plot instead of writing plot considering that it will be revealed as part schemer's plan.

Funny thing is, the “sex freak” stuff is cut back in the show

I really like Sister Sage, but the Smart aspect of her character is the lazy magical hand waving Smarts, or BS. Edit: like I get it's hard to write a smart character to begin with, but she is the worse type of her archetype. People see through bs. You can't make someone feel smart with BS.

In regards to Sherlock Holmes it's worth mentioning that he's written the way he is because tue stories aren't meant to be mysteries as we tuink of them today where the audience is intended to try and solve the mystery as the plot unfolds. The intent behind them is to show a series of events that can only be explained by tue supernatural, and then at the end the audience is given anbexplanation that requires nothing supernatural at all.

I thought of a plothole, Victoria doesn't just pop heads, she controls all blood flow. What's stopping her from just stopping Homelander's blood flow in it's tracks, basically causing him to go into cardiac arrest?

Superhero franchises really have to steal Manton Effect from the Worm webcomic - known inside the world of this franchise fact that superpowers could only target either only living creatures or objects that are not a part of a living creature. So healer can't heal wooden house despite it being organical, and telekinesis guy have to resort to throwing bricks in his opponents insted of just suspending them in air and then screwing their necks and popping their hearts. This needs for all superpowers to be of common origin, but this is already the case in most superhero universes. And sometimes some superperson (maybe with superpowers of different, much rarer origin) can ignore this limitation and this make them scary and alien for most other characters which is cool plot hook

This season's political messaging is terrible. I wish they didn't take the narrative equivalent to beating you with a baseball bat with their political opinions. What happened to "subtly", "less is more", so on and so forth? People are genuinely surprised Season 4 has a 53% rotten tomatoes, but this is what happens when your show goes political, and I'm not talking about a smart or clever political analysis, I'm talking about the Mr Birchum approach to political commentary, an in-your-face obnoxious preachy bordering on propaganda annoyance, to the point that some elements of the show are made specifically to advertise political messaging (which should never happen, political messaging should enhance the story, not the other way around). I can't believe they made Homelander a Trump allegory, I've had just about enough of that guy. Can't we just enjoy a genuinely scary villain without being reminded of one of the most annoying people in existence.

The Boys never were subtle, ffs, the season 2 antagonist is a literal nazi 💀
@Themoonishereagain3 ай бұрын
Meanwhile in Season 1, Episode 5 they have Annie's outdoor Christian convention and they say that Christianity is bad and you should accept queen people. And in Season 2 you had that instance when they painted Homelander with a Confederate flag on the side of a barn, or Stormfront's wedding photo with the N@z! flag on the background but no, keep thinking that they show was always subtle and was never in-your-face to begin with. 🤦 Also, just so you know, the season has a 54%, because it was review-bombed by people who don't want to hear that being a hateful person like the bad guys in the show is wrong. And also, Trump is never mentioned in this season even once, that's entirely on you for thinking that Homelander is like Trump.

That's artistically illiterate writing for you, when you can see writer's non-artistic intent with ease (like to cry about something they don't like, or make pondorous self-insert to bust their ego, or push their political agenda) despite than in quality art all non-artistic intents must be subtle and hidden enough to be not frustrating (and also working), while only obvious intent have to be telling interesting story
@kai8618Ай бұрын
@@Themoonishereagain I think people only started having a problem with it because real life was being so loud that The Boyz "subtlety" turned into a shotgun to your face. And THOSE people didn't like having it told they're actually terrible people. Again, The Dr. Disrespect situation happening RIGHT AFTER FIRECRACKER did it was just too bizarrely timed. Complete accident but still befuddling how it happened.
