Ah, I so enjoyed watching this. c: I really appreciate how you explain, via physics, how a lot of your painting techniques work. ie, how skin is matte when it's underwater but metal still shines; and then you paint it that way, it makes sense and looks fantastic! It helps me with art, but also helps me appreciate what I'm seeing day-to-day as well. Thank you for the video, and I hope your break was/is good! c:

@Klidi14 жыл бұрын
by fixing the symmetry of the face he didn't erase the style, he just made it correct
@jaediety4 жыл бұрын
@@Klidi1 sometimes "correct" doesn't look better. That's the point of art, to make something that is appealing to look at. If all art was photo realistic, it would be boring. The originals eyes added to the piece in a way that can't really be done if it's "correct"

@ArchyAJLS5 жыл бұрын
Hey, great fix. There's a couple of things I'd like to suggest though, for underwater scenes in general: The oils on our skin have a little bit of a hydrophobic effect, so we see a bit of a sparkle on the skin, often around the edges. It's not specular highlights, but rather a very thin film of sparkle, almost like a very weak fresnel. Water caustics make a massive difference. For one the IOR of water is different from air, so it breaks and reflects light differently, and two, light that breaks through the water surface usually does so in a wavy pattern. The direct light wouldn't just diffusely fall on top of her, it would follow a water caustic pattern. The water-level would show parts of her in a reflective manner, almost like a wavy mirror. it's quite an interesting effect. I think those caustics and reflections could also be more apparent in the reflection of the mirror, especially since the mirror would also reflect the water surface, not just the volume absorption / fog. Lastly some bubbles never hurt to emphasize that it's a fluid we're in. Still, I think your fix made a big difference compared to the original.

It's weird but I'm the exact opposite. I'm not that experienced in painting but never had this - 'what to do next' or 'how to finish', add more depth / detail problem from the start. But that is perhaps similarly like Boro I too come from a 3d background and used to be a 'professional' 3d artist before I started getting into painting. By professional I mean I was making money with it for a while... 3d gave me a huge insight into how things like light, material and perspective work in the real world. As somebody that is probably way worse at painting than you assuming that you come from traditional art's background, but has never had the 'adding detail'/ depth to a painting problem due to my insight... I would advise you to do more studies. Specifically conserning these subjects. Like light properties, material, various optics phenomenon like Fresnel IOR, subsurface scattering, volumetric lighting etc... I remember my first fully detailed painting, it was a concept of a submarine of sorts and It was underwater. I was struggling to figure out how to shade metal parts of it and realised that light from sky scatters in water would be a different color and intensity so the reflections would look differently... I immediately stopped with the painting and went on to do a study. First I learned to paint steel and then just added a more blue grayish light opposed to direct sunlight and lowered the intensity. After the study I immediately went back to detailing and shading the sub and problem was solved. You see what I mean? Studying these various little aspects give a huge insight...
@yurista_art5 жыл бұрын
I see that you have all come up with solutions and pretty good ones to be honest, in fact I've been doing them all this time but the problem is neither values, proportions anatomy or lighting, in my mind i can clearly see what i want to paint and how to paint it, and i start it perfectly but in the midway i feel like It's such a drag and that's when i lose my vision and start making bad color choices that makes my painting look outlandish and kind of like... In a traditional way of speaking "oops I've mixed colors a bit too much now it's getting muddy"
@yurista_art5 жыл бұрын
Before i didn't have this problem, when i started out I'd make any painting look naturalistic and subtle but now it's a mess, as if I'm missing the very thing that drives me

It boggles my mind how some artists are forgetting nature. If you're struggling in capturing something that looks "realistic", then observe nature just like the great masters of the past did. In this case, there are tons of real life images that demonstrates a human head semi-submerged in water. Mind you, I'm not saying to copy but OBSERVE and learn how water reflections, atmosphere, lighting, etc., works in real life. If you are really passionate, go to the beach with a friend and both go into the water and observe your friend's head underwater and whatnot. Anyways, I'm glad there are artists like Boro who are here to save the day. ^^ But seriously, as a professional artist myself, I can't stress enough how important it is too learn from nature even if you're creating fantasy stuff.
