I recall another video where Mambo was foraging beside Baby Khanyisa where he stepped up out of the sand pit and away from Khanyisa leaving her all alone. So, when Khanyisa realized she was alone trumpeted and the Allomothers came running within seconds to protect her. Fascinating to learn that is the elephant is left handed they will secret from the opposite side of their head. AMAZING. Glad to see Mambo taking his guarding and protection more seriously now or he realized he needed to do some dead tree pruning. Thank you Adine for translating into English for us, you are amazing with the variety of languages you understand. God Bless!

Lovely to see Mama Lundi with her sometimes wayward son Mambo and Khanyisa, the darling little orphan she became "mother" to and whom she still lovingly cares for together with the allomothers who love and protect Meisiekind and Timi. It was also lovely to see Mambo and Khanyisa so close together, relaxed and comfortable with each other. Although they were already very much an established family when Khanyisa joined them, I've always felt she really has completed and united the Wonderful Jabulani Herd. We were all distressed and very concerned when this badly injured little snare victim arrived at HERD, but everyone just fell in love with her. She immediately connected with Adine and despite the pain and discomfort she must have felt, I think she knew she was safe and loved from the outset. I'd like to think her birth mother somehow knows her little one is growing into a beautiful girl. Than you everyone who loves and cares for each Elephant in this extraordinary family. 💚🐘💚💖🐘🙏

'Mambo Pampoen' has got to be one of the cutest nicknames for Mr. Mischief! Lovely to see him and Little Miss K calmly foraging next to each other, though he was determined to show that tree who's boss 😄 Lundi was the first elephant I could identify, thanks to the perforations in her ear, then Mambo because he has similar perforations. Today we could discover another side of Mambo foraging peacefully with his sister little Miss Sunshine (not like the previous time when he was supposed to be in big brother's duty and left our pink Baby alone trumpeting in despair) He is a beautiful young bull and likes to show off his strength to impress his peers leaving this poor tree no chance 😅😂 Mama Lundi always very cool but she doesn't miss a thing of her son's program she knows him too well ! I love the quality of the light in this video....big, bad Mambo has got it in for that tree branch 😄 Their steps are so delicate for such large animals. I love watching their feet. Such a relaxed pace even when they are dismantling trees! What are they thinking? This is just their day. Peaceful feeding, walking and enjoying their surroundings. This video was sooo cute! My take is that Mr. Mischievous Mambo wanted Khanyisa to see his strength as he was having a get-go with the tree. But it sure looked like maybe he was trying to break off that branch so Khanyisa could reach it, too. It was nice seeing Mambo, Lundi and Meisiekind together so peacefully. Besides her milk bottles, she is a prolific forager--and often seems unfazed by what is happening around her because she also loves to munch!

It was extremely sad to read today (7-1-23), that a baby elephant at the Louisville, Kentucky (USA) zoo died late Friday from the EEHV virus. His name was Fitz and he would have turned 4 in August. He was loved by all...bless his soul.😢

If I was there, I would be jumping out of my skin so excited being there that the elephants would take off in all directions - good thing I'm on my phone! I’m still amazed at some of those thorns, kinda ouch to tongue but incredible that you telling us re saliva softening it. Well that was so enjoyable to see Mambo getting into that tree, at one stage I said out loud tiimmmbbberr 😂 as it looked like a fair bit of that tree was going down. I guess he just enjoyed knocking it around! 😂❤. Now was he as he moved towards Khanyisa saying this is my tree maybe not as she was getting into the grass. When you showed Mambos feet I wondered if those thorns would penetrate their feet or are they too hard, the pads I’m meaning?

Adine, I’ve had a left-right problem all my life. I found out while getting my masters degree what causes it. I’m left eyed, right handed, and left footed. Neither side is dominant. North, South, East, and West are not a problem for me. Everyone I’ve met since then (many years) with the same problem, and do not have a dominant side. When you mentioned driving with you, I laughed! I’m the same way. If I stop and think, I get it right. If I hurriedly give the direction, go where I point, not where I say! 😂

Yes they do get nutrition from the roots,bark and branches they switch to out in the bush during the winter elephants are very adaptable they have to be. Watch the recent video have you ever wondered how elephants eat thorny branches that HERD shared recently for this herd they also get supplemental food back at the homestead bc they are very well cared for so they get things like Lucerne(hay),bana grass grown on the property,pellets specifically designed for herbivores like elephants and donations of special treats like grapefruit(which they received recently)apples,oranges,butternuts,pumpkins and of course Sunshine’s most favorite thing in the world sweet potatoes. So there’s nothing to feel sorry for this is the diet that fully wild elephants have access to every day compared to the Jabulani herd they don’t always get fruit treats on a regular basis bc they’re not always available but they manage pretty well bc this is the kind of forage that they were built to eat as herbivores. In the spring and summer when the rains turn everything green there’s a lot more juicy leaves but in winter right now elephants look to find the bark and bulbs to feed on until the rains come again.
