When I was a kid, I got a flyer in the mail for an arcade auction. I begged my dad to take me. We got there, and of course, everything was going to be pricey. The first item up for bid was an EnduroRacer cab. Nobody was bidding. After a couple minutes, the auctioneer finally said "someone make an offer"! My dad bid $10..... ...and EnduroRacer is still in my garage.

Actually, the NES version of Strider was not meant to be a port of the arcade version. When Strider first came out, it was meant to be released in three forms - the arcade version, a manga, and an NES game based on the manga. The deal between Capcom and Motomiya Kikaku - the owner of the Strider property - fell through for some reason. So, the comic didn't make it stateside, and the Famicom version that was being developed got cancelled. This is also why, despite how kickass Strider Hiryu is as a concept, he has had such a limited run. Outside of his appearance in Marvel vs Capcom, his games number less than half a dozen. Yes, I AM a bit of a Strider geek!

Regarding Enduro Racer for the SMS: 1. Reaching 99 damage doesn't instantly end your game, but makes the countdown timer a lot faster. 2. Damage can be repaired by buying the bottom three items at the store. IIRC they have a random chance of being twice as effective. 3. If you do a wheelie right before a jump, it will not slow you down.

Bionic Commando on the NES is supposed to be the sequel to the arcade game, not a remake. The character in the arcade game is Super Joe (who you rescue in the NES game), the character in the NES version is "Captain Commando," (later renamed "Rad Spencer"). Basically, the official progression is: Commando -> Bionic Commando (arcade) -> Bionic Commando (NES) -> Captain Commando (arcade)
@redfalcon97 жыл бұрын
I came here to say the same thing, and that Bionic Commando for every other 1980's platform is pretty much the same as the arcade. The franchise is so convoluted in it's cannon once you factor in the "Rearmed" games, Mercs, and Wolf Of The Battlefield.
@ARCWuLF7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it took me a few years to figure out that the character in the NES game was Captain Commando (of the arcade beat-em-up game, "Captain Commando") too -- I believe it is, in fact, supposed to be his origin story. Let me explain that: In the NES game, the main character (who has bionic implants in his arm) is only ever referred to as "Captain" and never as "Rad Spencer." The main character was never referred to by any other name in the instruction booklet, the game, or any of the marketing materials. "Rad Spencer" (the name that has come to be associated with the character) didn't appear until the Game Boy version of the game, which is really its own continuity and not associated with any other version of the game (the Game Boy Color "Bionic Commando: Elite Force" was entirely different still). By the way, the original Game Boy version is incredibly fun in its own right and should be played by any fan of the series (the Game Boy Color version, not so much). Anyway, so the character is only referred to as "Captain," and is the titular character in the title (the Bionic Commando"), so it only makes sense that this character went on to become "Captain Commando." Plus, there's really a lot of overlap in the designs between the characters in the NES game and the Captain Commando arcade game: Though differently-colored, both have spiky hair, both have a penchant for wearing sunglasses, both have bionic arms, both are "Captains," and both are set in futuristic settings. Now, the NES game is clearly a torch being passed from Super Joe (Capcom's original video game hero) to the new hero, which could only be Capcom's new golden boy (okay, not Mega Man, but you know what I mean). Joe's words at the end of the game are clearly meant to intone that "The Captain" went on to do great things (like becoming a premiere world-saving superhero). So, every time you pick up an NES instruction booklet and see that weird blonde guy with twin machine guns and a disco medallion telling you to buy Capcom games, that's the guy from Bionic Commando. (Note: This version of the character was in instruction booklets for years before any of the Bionic Commando games existed). Well, I just thought it was time to tell the whole story. I hope this story will be told for a long time.

You remember how older cabinets would be reduced down to one quarter after a while? I remember Space Ace and Dragon's Lair stayed expensive until I stopped going to arcades in the late 90's for some reason. Maybe it was just in my area? It was just too unreasonably expensive when I could stay on fighting games or beat em ups for a tenth of the price.

There was alot of bad arcade ports back in those days. They became more faithful as we approached the PSX and Dreamcast eras. Then arcades died as the home consoles became way more powerful than arcades. I remember being very disappointed with double dragon for nes. It blew me away in arcades and the nes version was a completely different game. Actually really enjoyed it for what it was, but it was nothing like the arcade. Nes had alot of games that were BETTER than the arcade versions. They had less graphical power but alot of them played better , had more levels are were completely redone into a better game. Rygar and Bionic Commando barely resemble the arcade versions on NES and are way better in my opinion. Jackal is very different and seems better. Gyruss added bosses on nes though the arcade version I found a good deal harder. Karnov is a freakshow challenge wise in the arcade. Having beat that and the nes versions, the nes version felt way more balanced and enjoyable. Double Dragon 2 on nes is very different as well and WAY better than the arcade version in my opinion. Never liked the second double dragon in arcades. Prior to PSX , the genesis actually came really close to the arcade versions with games like Ghouls n ghosts, Strider, Altered Beast, Mercs and many more. Would have loved to have an x68000 back then but didnt know about it. Great videos as always

Nah. I like the Sega Genesis game all right, but Michael's combat moves are poorly thought out, and the game really needs some randomization in Katy locations to make it replayable. Meanwhile, the arcade Moonwalker is an awesome hybrid shooter/beat-em up. I'd take it over the console port any day, but they're both good games. It's just that the arcade original is a better realized game than the console one.

Killer Instinct was actually a pretty solid port (I'm assuming you're referring to the SNES version), all things considered. When you take into account the CPU/RAM/cart storage etc. of the SNES it's amazing that it carried over as well as it did. All the gameplay and moves etc. are intact, and the pre-rendered characters and backgrounds look pretty good. The general look/feel of the arcade is preserved (albeit with smaller sprites, no 3D backgrounds etc.).

Good idea for a episode. BUT! Why you only show the NES versions at times when there are actually more versions. Just to see what home port came closer. like Strider, that came to multiple consoles. It just feels like a missed opportunity to show of more games. I for one like to see more then just 2 versions. Just for the fun of it. List of Strider ports. So kinda sad you only choose one. Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore 64. DOS PlayStation, Sega Genesis Sega Master System, Sharp X68000, TurboGrafx CD, Virtual Console, Wii, ZX Spectrum Edite. I miss understood the idea behind this episode. So my comment dont don't fit to well. Sorry about that. :)

A few that weren't mentioned that stick out to me are the ports of Double Dragon and Gauntlet for the NES. Double Dragon had different level layouts and no true 2 player mode. Gauntlet was a completely different beast, taking the basic gameplay from 1 and 2, but threw in a quest where you have to collect password codes to get into the final level

Thumbs down. I watched the video expecting sexy arcade ports acting all naughty and unfaithful, maybe getting played by multiple consoles, ended up with a stupid arcade-home version comparison video

Love the song choice in the beginning. Bionic Commando ReArmed has a kickass Soundtrack.

The Coleco tabletop arcades were the best arcade cabinet/machines ever. I particularly loved Snoopy and Popeye.

Lets see. Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, Sailor Moon for both SFC and MD, Captain America and the Avengers on the NES, and Journey: Escape for the 2600 all come to mind off the top of my head.

Hey Dave, where is the girl from the last episode? Jen? Have you send her back? If yes, did you get any refund?

Pas Mater.. This comment shows a full lack of understanding. Jen is with Joe not Dave ( D'oh ! ). That and Jen is a beautiful person. I'll have you know. PS: Did you mother drop you on your head as a kid, as your grammar is as bad as your comment. This coming from a Dyslexic .....

Bionic Commando on NES has continues, but you have to get the wing emblems from the big enemies on the top down (helicopter) stages before you can use the function. You get one continue per wing emblem up to like 4 or 5. Then after you use them you have to go and collect more.
