Her interpretations of Prokofiev’s 7th sonata, Bachs partita in c minor, Liszt’s piano sonata, Chopins heroic polonaise, Liszt’s 6th Hungarian rhapsody and ravels Jeux d’eau are all very well known. Her fame started mostly with the Chopin competition she won by playing almost only solo works. Next to many solo recordings she has also played duets, piano trios and piano quartets. Yes at this stage of her life she mostly plays concertos but she has recorded many pieces for solo piano and ensembles. Think a little

The first recirding with DG was in 70 the famous Lizst-sonata the best for me viril and feminine and her first Schumann : in this erea 1970 Pollini was Chopin -studies also Schumann ( Fantaisie) , the second recording Argeruch was Gaspard-Ravel here are the first DG after her Price Tchaikovsky-Genève-Busoni etc ..before the young Argerich was a prodigious teenager pianist ( as Roberto Benzi also ) ; j known recordings you write mostly before 35 y o after the end only Orchestras except some Bach etc : so Argerich to day has not a piano Discography solo-piano , tiny in comparison of international solists , in fact what about Chopin Ravel Beethoven etc in piano-solos ? a tiny discography so j repeat Argerich is the best subterfuge in piano History when many great pianists as Kempff Cortot Backaus. have a little " Likes " on Y Tube : do you understand or have you nothing in your brain for understand what j mean ; yesterday j have erased all music on my Channel j have no answers so j comment without to day a music-Channel it's better !

Thank you! Your 1 and 2 would be mine too - not surprised that Rachmaninoff features twice in your selection 😊. I can never get enough if him. Martha Argerich (the Prokovief concerto) is possibly one of the greatest pianists in modern times. Her Rachmaninoff 3 (when she was much younger) was a breathtaking performance.

Really, I mean nobody does Tchaikovsky justice that I can find except for possibly van Claiborne's first audio recording. But even he was so flagrant, it still missed quite a few things Tchaikovsky wanted to do to the listener.

I'm going to go and say that the rach 4 opening is the best opening I've heard to a concerto. It's practically a climax right at the beginning the concerto and is litteraly meant to amaze listeners

Love this! Still always (for me) skewing to the Rachmaninoff! I remember this Olga Kern performance, which was (if I remember) part of a Piano competition, though still a transcendent and 'professional' quality reading, beyond doubt. The Second Concerto performance here is also a standout, though I know nothing of the performer. Also, can never fail to be moved by the opening chords of the Emperor concerto. Nice posting!

My favourites are Mendelssohn's first and several of Mozart's, especially the 20th. I consider all of these great music and love many of the composers, but somehow their piano concerti have never managed to get me as much as Mozart's.

I'm listening to the Grieg right now and absolutely it belongs on this list. Dunno about Brahms #2, remember this is supposed to be openings . . it is a great concerto though. Thank you for the list. Honorable mention IMO goes to the Bruch Double Piano Concerto in A-Flat Minor. Tragedy to triumph concerto with the twist of A-flat, a typically solemn key, with a massive Romantic-tragic opening.

Just because the piano is absent in quite a few bars from the 1st downbeat in the work doesn't mean that the most powerful opening in the entire literature isn't surpassingly worthy of inclusion on this list. When the piano does finally speak, it is with such contrast (as if searching for a melody, earnestly and with the same flow, but at lower volume) that it takes one by surprise. Both the introduction and the piano entry must contain inexorable forward motion and pace. The Fleisher/Szell/CO recording of the Brahms D minor concerto makes the most persuasive case imaginable. Very good (and, of course, correct - ha!) to see both the Poulenc and Saint-Saens works considered and accepted.

There’s a reason for Wang’s slower-than-usual beginning of the Schumann. It doesn’t make sense to have such a spiritual phrase sound like a madman. It just makes sense to be sensible and not crazy. I prefer Yuja Wang's Mendelssohn, both over Hough and instead of her Schumann, but both are wonderful concertos

I guess my previous comments went with the old video being blocked, but I do wish you would follow up with some more modern concertos, among them those by Samuel Barber, Bernard Herrmann, John Corigliano, Miklos Rozsa and Lowell Liebermann. It also gives some folks a chance to hear concertos that they're not familiar with.

I love the both Chopin's I and II, but unfortunately, the piano parts don't start till almost 3 minutes from the beginnings. In this video, I only used the ones with the piano within a minute of the beginnings.

@@henrybrowne7248 No I haven't, but I'll say why I'm not a fan of the concerto. I feel like many musical pieces have some, or several parts that are just beautiful, or crazy, or fun to listen to, anything that makes me listen to it again, and besides the B-flat minor part around 4 minutes and 12 minutes into the first part, I just don't find the music interesting enough... Ravel's piano concerto in G is (in my opinion) full of parts which are brilliant, making me want to listen to the concerto again another time, and Ravel ofcourse is the master of orchestration, with the concerto being 1 fenomenal example. I believe, however, that the Tchaikovksy concerto is probably very advanced in terms of themes, dynamics, etc. The beginning is also sick I have to admit so I should change my comment to 'move Tchaikovksy a bit lower on the list and add ravel somewhere in the top 3' Jeez this comment is way too long, respect if you read all of it

I think the Tchaikovsky is rather polarizing: some say it's greater than sliced bread[so to speak], then others, like us, kind of look down our noses a little bit. Of course, so much of like/dislike is really just the TYPE of music that's in it, eg sad, powerful, loud, soft, romantic, elegant, interesting harmony, etc., etc. For me romantic music has a really fine line through it: on one side I really like it; on the other it gets too cloying, or corny, or pedestrian, or bombastic, etc.

I love 99% of the Fedorova Rachmaninoff 2. I don't know how many times I've seen it but she has a tiny issue in the middle of the 3rd movement that bugs me everytime 😖

I predicted Tchaikovsky in B-flat minor would finish first. I would have included Bartok's 1 or 2 instead of Rachmaninov's 3rd keeping it at one concerto for each selected composer. The piano concertos by Shostakovich are also great.

Both Shostakovich concertos are marvelous works, of course (especially the slow movements - just breathtaking...from a non-romantic, unsentimental composer, no less!), but their beginnings are merely ok, to my ears. You really didn't go out on a limb with your prediction. After all, the 1st piano concerto remains the most popular one ever (Rachmaninov No. 2 was for many years, by surveys, the 2nd most popular). I like that you mentioned Bela's 1st two.
