Tying into the idea of Goten and Trunks being believable, I always thought the relief and joy they expressed when Gohan showed up was far more real and heartfelt than most of (maybe any of) Goku's last minute saves. In the show, all the characters know for sure that Goku is coming, he's just late and they have to just run down the clock until he gets there. In this movie, Goten and Trunks are just kids who have no idea that anyone is coming to help them at all, so the release of tension when Gohan does show up is that much greater, and much more earned. Also, at the risk of dragging this post out, while I do understand the criticisms about "caveman Brolly," I always kind of liked the idea that it shows Brolly, for all his power, did not come out of the first movie unscathed. Sure, he seems physically fine, but mentally he's clearly not all there anymore.

This was the first Dragon Ball *anything* that I ever watched. I watched it in Japanese with english subtitles and then I went on to watch Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z much later. It's strange to think that this era of Dragon Ball where Goku is dead, Gohan is a teenager with a little brother named Goten, Trunks is a kid, Kuririn has hair, and Videl is a recurring character was my first introduction to this franchise. I still remember watching the "We Gotta Power" opening and being mesmerized by how many interesting looking characters were in it as well as how much history they seemed to have. It made me want to learn more about them and be introduced to the characters that weren't in this movie, which I eventually did.

I'm disappointed you didn't mention Trunks' role in stopping Broly. He's basically Vegeta from the Cell Saga climax, where he provides a momentary distraction to enable Gohan (w/ undead Goku cheering him on) to defeat the bad guy in a beam struggle. Since Vegeta isn't in this movie, his son fills that in his place. One of the few aspects of the Cell Saga climax that doesn't get ripped off in Bojack Unbound ends up getting ripped off in this movie instead.

I always liked the idea of Dragon Ball moving on with Goten and Trunks as main character successors. I remember back before GT released here, a middle school friend, who was my source for halfway-accurate advance information about what was coming, told me that GT stood for "Goten's Time." I thought about that again when I saw the first or second episode of Super, when Goten and Trunks fight a giant snake, or whatever. There's a simple logical explanation for why Broly's pod headed to Earth. In the original Broly film, Paragus states that his real desire is to take over Earth after his revenge on Vegeta is completed. So, one would assume that the space pods were already preprogrammed to go to Earth, not much different than how the Ginyu Force pods were programmed to go to Yadrat. It makes perfect sense.

@@spartanq7781 Yeah, even though I'm not a huge fan of the three Broly films, they are connected. Broly crash lands, wakes up and is defeated a second time. But his DNA is collected and sold to the highest bidder hence Bio Broly.

Thank you Mister, you made me think about how Broly had been used here, making me rethink that his "character" here made sense in the context of the movie's structure. It is really a shame though, that this characterization here of Broly became his defacto character ever since, a raging beast for the sake of being a raging beast, no moment to show if he could be a good guy (like Hulk) or a genuine evildoer... and I think we can all see that even his 2018 incarnation main quirk, is being just that, a mindless beast, only that time, without even being build up as a super legendary monster... I can't wait to hear what you think about his 2018 rebranding, especially when compared to the og version... I, in the midtime, will tell you that to me, og Broly initially was more felt as a dangerous character, in the sense that he still acted on his own, and talked in his first outing; the 2018 Broly doesn't have that, he has a brief sequence of talking and exposition, but when it comes to the big dumb fight, he is just an object, a bland characterless wall... really a shame in my opinion, especially since he still gets narratively murdered at the end of the movie, exiled on Vampa to never be seen again!

When Broly becomes the LSSJ on the 1st movie he wasn't a Goku obsessed bore, as a villain he was a mix of Freeza and Cell imo; he was snarky, sarcastic, had a dark sense of humor and loved every minute of his tyranny because his character was perfectly aligned with the way Saiyans were originally portrayed back in the 90s. When Broly becomes free of the mental strain by transforming he becomes a completely different character, sure he says Goku will be his 1st victim but he immediately targets Gohan and Trunks afterward, everyone was an equal target, in the Japanese version Broly even admits that he respects Goku, Gohan, Trunks and Piccolo for trying to stop him when they knew they couldn't beat him.

Normally I don't mind the hot takes and most of the time I agree with them This isn't one of those times. Breaking the formula is good, but that doesn't mean what's there is very effective in a vacuum- which is to say, looking at it as its own piece without starting from the basis that there is a formula to 'break' (while at the same time shoving an out-of-context antagonist)- which is why most people dislike this movie. The original bits aren't that fun _or_ funny, because the attempts at humor are... well... _basic_ to say the least. Still, it's a good video, and I'm glad someone found enjoyment in this piece of media. If this is how the Bio-Broly review is going to go... The biggest problem with Broly is that he's just too strong. That's his character, that's his personality, that's his backstory and that's the role he plays in all of the movies. There's nothing interesting you can do with him unless you completely rewrite his character, so he can only be used as a mechanical boss instead of a narrative one, which, just like Miltank in Crystal, you can only keep punching until it dies and find a way to avoid getting steam rolled by that powerhouse. If you put characters that are weaker than the first cast that fought him was and you still expect Broly to be defeated the traditional way, you MUST nerf him. Let's be real here, any SSJ could have broken Videl in a single attack, yet here we Broly who has no regard for life just beating her up. Power creep has always been a problem with Z, but the Broly movies just ignore power scaling itself when it is convenient.

Broly is kinda like the opposite of a main character; someone who keeps getting stronger, is unmatched by all non-main characters and only loses due to reasons for them to come back stronger. Broly is like what if Goku was a bad guy and it's probably why people like him. Probably why he is the only one (besides cooler) to get a sequel ! Although there's a problem with writing someone with a sort of main character plot-armour... he can't be killed without a a macguffin or some reason thing that just happens to work; like punching him really hard. The writers literally wrote themselves into a corner :D

That being said, he isn't unsalvageable. They probably could have done a story like "Broli finds an interest in something that isn't violence, and the Dragon Team spends the movie trying to give him more while also figuring out how to get rid of him."

I've always really liked this movie. As I got older and gained access to the internet. I was genuinely surprised to find out just how much hate this movie got and currently still gets to this day. It's a fun lighthearted romp featuring three characters that don't get enough shine either in the manga and or anime adaptation. That work greatly with one another as a trio. Kuririn shows up to take Piccolo's trope for crying out loud. That alone should tell people to not take this one so seriously and to enjoy its lighthearted nature. It's nice and even kinda refreshing to finally see somebody defending this movie. Great video as always MistareFusion! Keep up your great work and rock on! Cheers!

I do somewhat get that this movie is supposed to be more of a lighthearted farce (at least until the climax), but I personally don’t think it works. The movie ultimately strikes me as boring and lacking. This ultimately just feels like it could be an extended filler episode of the TV series, which is always the weakest part of these movies. I’m not outraged that Broly is played less seriously this time around, but it’s not enough to make this movie stand out either. Frankly, I somewhat prefer Movie 11 simply because that one fully embraces being weird schlock that’s truly unlike anything ever seen in the manga.

god, I love this movie. This was the first Dragon Ball thing I owned on a DVD when I was a kid. Love the fact that every Dragon Ball media regained the sillyness of its early era during those years. Happy New Year, Lance! Thanks for the excellent content!

You know, I'm in the camp that this film is still mostly pretty boring (even if I also like some of the antics), but I do step up to defend Bio Broli. I can't wait to see your review of that one.

Lance's thoughts on this film really brought the point of the investment of Dragon Ball films and the different appeals some fans expect and want from it. Most want an all-out fight, while others want character interactions around a fixated plot. With this in mind and my personal feelings of the Dragon Ball franchise, I lean more into the hype of epic fights while also appreciating the story's plot, such as the recent Moro arc. I really appreciate MistareFusion pointing out his interest in the story and adventure aspects of Dragon Ball throughout his whole dissection series, as it brings up interesting views on certain ideas presented in the franchise.

I have always liked this movie. I never understood the hate this movie gets. I don't get a lot of the popular opinions of the Dragon Ball community. It's one reason I learned that our opinions should be treasured not marginalized. I mentioned this in your Twitter post but this outfit of Videl is the best one she ever has. Overall Tenshinhan has the best outfits except that stupid looking t-shirt in the late Cell arc. Say goodbye to any sort of relevance. Also I love how this movie looks I wish the series itself looked like this. It's weird the movies stick closer to the manga colors more than the anime based on.

As someone who is openly apathetic to this movie, to me this one could've been good without Broli around since bringing him back totally ruins his original death in Movie. Just as how much Movie 6 ruined the resolution of Movie 5.

@@spartanq7781 well yes 13 and Bojack represent the worst of DBZ Movie Villains as nothing more than lifeless cardobard blubs with nothing to go for them. While the other ones, just clones of previously established villains, but without some of the elements that made him interesting before the fight happens where it is downhill. See Coola and Janemba, even though the latter is my favorite DBZ movie villain for his fun skillset and how well animated his fight is despite lacking the range and exhuberance Majin Boo displayed. As for Coola, yeah he is overhyped as Broli.

Gohan could at least be introduced as fetching the kids for their concerned mothers instead of just flying around. Have a scene where Bulma gives him a dragon ball radar at Chichis insistence and then throw in a line about how the kidds were not supposed to be out but had recently mentioned dragon balls and there you go.

Based on patterns, I'm gonna try predicting your opinions on the last three movies. (I haven't seen any of them so apologies if I get any facts wrong) Bio-Broly: Bonus point for focusing on Satan and 18. Good resolution for the priest in this film. Appreciation for Goten and Trunks being more serious from having already met Broly. Uninteresting design for Bio-Broly and the other Bio-Warriors. Great ending as the fighting starts and ends with the same characters with no one else showing up at the last minute. Unnecessary last scene about Goku preparing to fight Broly. Fusion Reborn: Great visuals and music. Fun moments with the heroes defending Earth from revived villains and fat Gogeta. Villain made interesting for his powers and design but also loses it a bit due to being a lesser copy of the current manga main villain. Good ending due to the fusion actually defeating the threat but weak for feeling unnecessary (this one is the biggest guess as I don't know your entire opinion on fusion yet other than finding Gogeta pointless in Broly 4). Wrath of the Dragon: Fascinating story focusing on new characters. Trend breaking villain that works great as the type of threat it's meant to be. Riveting bonding between Trunks and Tapion. Ending ruined because of Goku taking the spotlight at the last second.

To be honest I really don't like how the movies of Dragon Ball Z are struchedred either, there often repetitive, have too much fighting but without proper build up, and a lot of the villians just bled in together. and I'm not really that much of a fan of Broil, nor do I see why he is popular as everyone says. he's just anonther strong enemy who is overpowered and barely has any other diologe other than Kakerotto. (Aka Kakerot.) So thanks for reviewing this movie. I definitely think Movies 10 and 11 are very underrated.

I'm a bit surprised people hate the second movie- This is a great movie and its focus on the characters again and I'm also just glad we got something far different. I love the fake out with Krillin too, I thought it was just some lazy Piccolo moment that was going to happen but NOPE! Krillin saves the day! Plus Gohan fight with Broly is fun to me and has a BRUTAL FEEL. I always had the idea that the movies were an alt timeline were certain things happened, and with this one I just always thought it was like the normal timeline. So before the tournament and before they find out Goku's coming back. Maybe Gohan meets Videl earlier, and how does Gohan getting his shit kicked in by Broly affect him? After this does he train to hell and back just in case? It's all so interesting to me.

YES! THANK YOU! I really enjoy parts 2 and 3 of the Broly trilogy, and it always made me sad and a bit confused while they're so reviled by so much of the community. This one is almost pure charm and fun, and feels a lot more complete and substantial than most of the other movies of its era. And honestly, it's kind of brilliant of Koyama: if you can't think of a stronger villain, than change the story and context around that villain to make something fresh! And in my opinion, it worked brilliantly

Great take! This one is by far my favorite movie, and the one I watched the most as a kid. I remember thinking it would have been perfect if not for the ending. I was dissapointed even at the age of 12 that Goku magically shows up to take the win away from the main cast. I also remember wishing Videl had been in the entire movie too.
