As you may or may not know, the powers that be have taken issue with my using Dragon Ball music in the opening. I suppose that's certainly their right. As a result, I have made the difficult choice to replace the opening music in most of The Boo Arc videos with a new, KZbin-friendly piece. I hope you like it. As a compromise, I have retained the original music in a few select Boo Arc videos scattered across the arc. For those who miss the original, follow this link to the opening as I uploaded it in 2020. I think Majiin Buu's regeneration, while significantly greater than Cell's is a lot better handled than Cell's. Buu's entire being is jut being a bubblegum monster. There's never really a point where you see Buu with a big ol' hole in him and think "oh that's it, that's gonna kill him." Cell is basically a solid beefy fighter like Freeza who just happens to regen whenever he gets hit with a big attack. Being bouncy, gummy, rubbery and regenerating is literally baked into Majiin Buu's character. I could totally picture cell not regenerating but I can't imagine Majiin Buu not being able to. It's baked into his character.

I agree. However, it’s a bit jarring when suddenly, he can get injured by Gohan and Vegeto, and then be destroyed by the genki Dama just because. I understand that if Boo were completely invincible, they’d have no reasonable way of beating him, but it still felt like it was a repeat of Cell’s death.
@yotomoe59533 жыл бұрын
@@bgvo4373 I've always seen it as a his regeneration being more built around being eviscerated but if you just beat him to a pulp you could eventually just knock him unconscious or hurt him. He's not bereft of feeling PAIN, just of being vitally wounded or killed. To that end, and this is purely fan theory, but I always assumed the Genki Dama which was aimed directly at his evil heart just meticulously and specifically destroyed every part of him since every single inch of him is also sentient and evil and it was just too large for him to snake his way out from under it.

The regeneration itself is almost always handled creatively, but almost if not every fight with Boo is boring IMO because he never gets tired or shows visible damage. Even in moments where it seems a character has the upper hand, they are brief, mean nothing, and are undercut later. The thing that brought this to a head for me was when Pure Boo fought Majin Boo. Vegeta says that their power drops and they can feel tired, but only when fighting another Boo. So it’s just invincible rubber monsters punching each other until Toriyama arbitrarily decides one is pooped without any visible showcase.

@@bgvo4373 Bit late in my reply, but while I never really had a problem with the Genki Dama (they establish earlier that they had to destroy him utterly, the good ol' GD/SB does a decent job of that), it's REALLY weird that all the sudden Gohan/Vegeto can do just normal damage to him, especially since that doesn't even really come up afterwards. The Boo vs Boo fight goes back to them blowing holes and limbs off and regenerating, but for some reason for those two fights they're able to just...do arbitrary damage. It doesn't even really effect him for long, after he "absorbs" Vegito it's not like he's suffering from any damage.

So whether or not he continues and dissects the remainder of the franchise's media after he finishes dissecting the manga will depend on how many people donate regularly to his Patreon. Yeah, Goku never really needed this kind of development since, well, he's not evil, but it is what it is. @Maria Yuri This is something that happened only in the DBS anime, thus it's an addition of the producers rather than something Toriyama decided, so you might as well discard it completely. Yeah, interesting insight you have there. Frieza doesn't have any regeneration powers as proven by the fact that he had to be outfitted with mechanics but he was able to fight Goku for at least a moment with nothing but a torso and one arm (Something that no other character has really done besides him) *And* survive the total destruction of a Planet Namek *AND* breath in the vacuum of space. Although I do have to say that Goku wanting a one on one fight verses a two verses one fight is not merely at the behest of the plot. Goku clearly prefers a one on one fight but he's not above teaming up if he needs it. Goku wants to fight against Buu because they can't win on their own but together they can. Goku didn't need to team up against Yakon because he won on his own. He didn't team up against Cell not only because Cell was an almost equal match for Goku anyway and Goku thought he might've had a shot but he knew Gohan could win one on one and he wasn't wrong. I just don't think it's as simple as "The Plot demands it". Plus for better or for worse as much as you might hate it and prefer otherwise there are large sections of the story where the other characters would just get killed if they interfered and they can do little more than buy time or maybe give a distraction (Which is usually what they end up doing anyway).

Thinking about Vegeta's decision to quit the fight with Goku and take on Buu, I can come up with two explanations as to why he did it. The first, is that Goku is no longer interested in fighting as he is too busy nagging about Buu, so he won't focus on Vegeta anymore.....this one is probably true. The second reason is that Vegeta was genuinely surprised by Buu's power. Up to this point, Vegeta may have been confident in his belief that Buu was no match for him or Goku. I know that's the whole "Cell Reaching his Perfect Form" bit coming back, but this time it's less about arrogance and more about a lack of credibility. In your earlier videos, your compare Kaioshin to Future Trunk, a character who gives a warning that the heroes aren't taking seriously. But in the Kaioshin's case, the idea the theart is not that big works better. Every other villain in the series has something to back them up. We know the Saiyans are powerful because Raditz was. We know Freeza is powerful because Vegeta is scared of him. We know the Androids are powerful because Future Trunks couldn't beat them. But the only credence to Buu's power is what the Kaioshin said and he has repeatedly being shown to out of his own depth. He tries to build up Buu's power by saying how the Kaioshin could beat Freeza in one hit and Buu defeated them. Problem is, we already saw Trunks beat Freeza in one hit. So Kaioshin is using an outdated reference. Now, if he had used Cell instead, then this would strike harder to the characters. Goku accepts the Kaioshin's word as much he would accept King Kai's word. But Vegeta has no reason to care what the Kaioshin says since he was completely taken back by the Saiyans power in the first place. Not to mention that Babidi and his forces aren't that fearsome either, not even Dabura who Vegeta was confident he could beat. The first half of the arc does seem to toy with the idea that maybe Buu really was NOT that powerful at all and the Kaioshin was just exaggerating. Even Buu's silly appearance may have been part of this red herring. Even Gohan thought he could beat Buu when he first saw him. That would honestly would be an equally fun twist to find out that Buu is a weakling the whole time. Maybe Vegeta really did think that Buu wasn't going to be a problem and thus he didn't care if he was released? That would cast his actions in slightly different light at least, if he thought the Earth and his family were in no real danger from Buu and that Vegeta could just put him down with ease after fighting Goku. With Cell, it's just Vegeta's ego and not much else. But with Buu, well, maybe there was no real danger? All we have is the Kaioshin's word and, well, he's not done much to earn the character's attention or respect.

9:29 - I hate these internal inconsistencies. If Piccolo is fine as long as his head is intact, then what about when he sacrificed himself for Gohan? What about the other Namekians killed by Frieza but with their heads still intact? What about his father who was run through the chest by kid Goku and died? It's like Saiyans not growing hair anymore once they grow it (so Vegeta looks the same after returning from the time chamber but Trunks has long hair). What point does that serve? And why, in Dragon Ball Super do Goku and Vegeta both have beards when coming out, and in GT, Vegeta not only has a moustache, but also CUT his hair, apparently never to have the longer hair again (unless it is on his face?)?
@reversalmushroom3 жыл бұрын
Vegeta's sacrifice is ruined for me by the fact that it accomplishes nothing. It was all for nothing. This is why I can't get behind it as awesome character development for Vegeta. He's clearly trying to be like Goku at the end of the Cell saga and gets a worse version. I've seen that defended as "Well, Goku didn't stop Cell! either!", but Goku altered the trajectory of the timeline. As in, Cell was going to blow up the world and kill everyone, and he didn't. But with Vegeta, but did everything he was going to do, just pushed back a couple minutes. "But he saved the sons!" They could've just had him fight Buu normally to hold him off while they escaped and he gets slowly beaten to death; they didn't specifically have to have him blow himself up. That at least wouldn't have had the problem of making you think that might've stopped Buu and then not since everyone knew it never would and that was never the intent. And it didn't even save anyone. Buu kills the sons and Piccolo and everyone in the world and then blows up the world anyway, and Goku, someone completely unrelated to that is the one who saves the day. So Buu was not killed and went on to do all the exact same things he would've done in the exact same order. Imagine if Cell had reappeared and inflated himself again and succeeded in blowing up the world with everyone helpless to do anything. It would be like "Okay, well, narratively, what was the point of that?" And this exact thing happened with the Chiaotzu death, but that at least made me feel something because it added to how dastardly Nappa was. Not only do they not do that with Buu because of how silly he is, but everyone's gone, so you don't get a bunch of hurt reactions of everyone there watching it, just people being briefly surprised and momentarily melancholy when they find out later.
@randomfox122453 жыл бұрын
To the point about Piccolo regenerating: something I always concluded for myself was that Piccolo probably didn't even realize for himself how much it was possible for him to regenerate from UNTIL the Cell saga. And since Cell kept going "I CAN COME BACK FROM WHATEVER BECAUSE PICCOLO JUICE!" Piccolo probably went "huh... Guess that means I'm a lot more durable than I thought." The limitation about it being energy taxing is also fairly irrelevant now since Piccolo is stronger than a Super Sayian, and also never fights anymore anyway so that facet might as well never come up anymore.
@DidgeridudeEX3 жыл бұрын
That would make sense except for one thing: why did Piccolo die to Nappa then? There was no mortal wound. If piccolo could regenerate so well he should be able to shrug that off.
@randomfox122453 жыл бұрын
@@DidgeridudeEX i imagine it comes down to the fact that it takes a lot of energy for him to regenerate. In the Sayian arc, he only had, what, 1000 battle power? By now he's gotta be over the tens of millions in terms of numerical designation. If he's dumping energy into Health Points when he regenerates, it stands to reason he can heal from far worse damage than he used to be capable of now that he has more energy to throw around.

This should have been a permanent sacrifice for Vegeta. It would have been masterful storytelling that the proud prince failed at everything he's ever aspired to. Even his one noble act that cost him his life. He would be permanently punished for his heinous actions throughout his lifes. Bringing him back to life undercuts all of it. Goku and Vegeta definitely could have had a more interesting fight for the sake of the audience, but I have to say the funny thing with their original fight is it wasn't really a complete 1v1 anyway. Goku would have pretty much lost against Vegeta if it weren't for Gohan, Krillin, and Yajirobe assisting. To me that fact sort of tones down the hype for a "refight" in the first place.
@prometheusmodelow83223 жыл бұрын

@damkylan33 жыл бұрын
I do agree he should have just met his end on Namek, but I also think the Kid Buu stuff was necessary to tie this arc in particular together. I've said before that it's very fitting that his "noble sacrifice" in this moment is an unmitigated failure because he did not deserve to be the hero. That's a good strong message, but I think his return only adds to that theme as he is forced to watch his pride get sliced to ribbons again and again. He gets ragdolled by Buu, says Goku is the best, has to rely on Earthlings, has to beg them for help they don't give him, has to be saved by Mr. Satan, and ultimately his key role in saving the Earth goes completely unnoticed by most of the people of Earth, as it should be. However, had I been born Akira Toriyama and had written the story exactly the same up until that point, I would not have brought Vegeta back to life and just had him make his peace once his work was done and then disappear forever ala Movie 12. In that way, he has repaired what he destroyed, but also accepts that he cannot walk back his crimes, and passes on.

@prometheusmodelow83223 жыл бұрын
I think that Toriyama wasn't as focused on the fight itself, but rather in the fallout of it happening (Majin Buu being released and Vegeta's sacrifice) Not that he intended for it to be satisfying or unsatisfying in any way, he was just getting from A to B in my eyes.
