As someone who has struggled with weight all my life, I like your take on it. Scaring or shaming someone doesn't help, but straight medical facts respect a person as a thinking being who can make choices for different health outcomes.

I appreciate your perspective on this issue. It's important to approach the topic of weight and health with empathy and respect for individuals who may be struggling with their weight. Indeed, presenting medical facts and information in a non-judgmental and supportive manner can empower people to make informed choices about their health. It's a collaborative approach that recognizes that each person is capable of making positive changes when provided with the right guidance and understanding. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

As someone who is morbidly obese, I completely disagree. This scenario in the video literally doesn't exist, and while the doctor seems nice, we hear these "facts" all day everyday from every single aspect of society. I went to buy vegetables the other day and the fucking ASIAN GROCER said I was too big and should start running. Stop pretending that inundating fat people with "just basic facts bro" isn't an obvious type of shaming.

When I was a teenager the obgyn threatened to make me cry if I didn’t loose over 75 pounds in a month because I was “morbidly obese” I wasn’t obese, I was slightly overweight and my legs are mostly muscle . I didn’t go back. I’m heavier now than I was then (thank you Marriott potatoes on a weekly basis and sometimes every day for 5 years back to back). I’ve got thighs and they won’t leave.

I'm fat, so im working with a dietician to lose weight, and be healthier. Every doctor I've seen since arriving in the USA has said I need to lose weight, I wasn't offended because I'm not a child, and because they're right. I'm nowhere near as big as these women. It's insane. I don't have high blood pressure, or diabetes etc... and I don't want them, so im trying to work it out.

I'm a bit on the bigger side but not too badly, however what frustrates me about doctors telling me to lose weight is that they never tell me how or help me figure out how. Believe me I want to lose the 15 to 20kg that you tell me to lose! But when you are disabled, have chronic pain and are a part-time walking cane user because otherwise you can't walk, your advice of 'just exercise more and live less of a sedentary lifestyle, go to the gym or for a run for example' aren't realistic (and yes that is literal advice I have gotten from 3 different doctors and 2 nurses, even when one time I was at the appointment with my cane). And that's my biggest problem, because I want to lose the weight but I never get help even when I ask on how to achieve it and keep it off🤷🏼‍♀️

It's starting to get ridiculous. My doctor doesn't automatically weigh me anymore. They'll ask me if I want to weigh or ask me how much I weigh. On my most recent visit, they were set to just skip it all together. Then, I was in for a skin condition - making sure dark spots were just dark spots. They're asking if they can touch the affected area - my back - asking for permission to lift my shirt. Now, I'm not even sure they saw the worst of it. I thought my shirt was lifted high enough at the time, but the marks are on my upper traps. Lifting my shirt may not have revealed the worst of it. This care bear woke bullshit is affecting my quality of care now. We need to stop this shit.

Drug addicts, alcoholics, smokers are not tolerated in society. Why do we cast a blind eye to this kind of addiction? Better yet, why do we as Americans in particular, choose to be voluntary invalids? There are industries that restrict how fat you can be in order to do the job. How much do these people cost the health care industry?

My sister is morbidly obese. She "emotionally" eats as opposed to eating for good health. She claimed getting both knees replaced are "normal" in life. 😮 Her husband is educated but will not step forward & tell her she needs to exercise, eat & drink healthy & maybe get a job to fill her empty days that leaves her at home, eating fattening foods & drinking soda all day long from boredom, constant, easy, convenient access to unhealthy foods to snack 30' from where she constantly sits & watches her addiction soap operas Monday thru Friday. The doctors aren't going to tell her she needs exercise & to eat & drink healthy. The doctors make too much money from her unhealthy choices. I grew up with her. I watched how she lived, ate & drank all day long when not in school. 😮 The rest of her thought processing & behaviors are just as bad if not worse towards others. "I'm a goddess & you're my slave". "You are here to make ME happy." Obesity can be from very unhealthy psychological/emotional issues. She's put herself in God's place & it is her choice 🤷 I know someone else who when awake (even in the middle of the night) constantly consume liquids & foods loaded with sugar & she's diabetic. More mental health issues there. Going to bed eating cupcakes (in the middle of the night also) & waking up to a sugary oatmeal sandwich breakfast, eating sugary foods with no nutritional value & sweet tea or soda all day long won't bring her blood sugar down. She's not going to change or stop either. I can't help her. She's in her 50's but acts like a sneaky child at the age of 3. 🤷 It's their choice to be the way they are. They are going to have to help themselves. I can't do it for them. I have to work on my issues that I know I have that are a problem. 🫀

You bring up a challenging and complex situation involving your sister and someone you know who are dealing with obesity and related health issues. It's true that obesity can be influenced by various factors, including psychological and emotional issues, as well as lifestyle choices. While individuals ultimately have agency over their choices, it's important to remember that providing support and understanding can be valuable in helping them make healthier decisions. Encouraging open and non-judgmental communication can sometimes be a way to initiate positive changes. However, it's also crucial to respect their autonomy and the fact that they may need to take the initiative in addressing their health. Additionally, it's commendable that you are aware of your own issues and are working on them. Self-improvement and personal growth are journeys that we all undertake in different ways and at our own pace.

@@DoctorRich Thank you. Recognition of multiple, possible causations of obesity should be observed by all medical professionals. I understand some are "burnt out" on knowing the person sitting in front of them is not going to listen or follow thru with their proven health recommendations. The patient's habits take effort to alter. Too many won't put forth the effort required to alter their own mental, chemical & physical poor health habits. My sister has her mental health issues by habit & choice after all these years. She will not deviate from her "wants" in life. She avoids the "truth" which is another hard habit to break. I gave her to God a few years ago. Her husband needs to step forward, if he truly loves her to guide her to the real mental & physical help she needs. I doubt he ever will. She wears the pants in the house & he lets her. The Bible is our guide on how to live. It is the most important book to read & share in any marriage, family & with others. 🙏

Exactly why the 90s was probably the best decade where society was in the best state. Because people accepted reality and there was none of this woke ideology, no identity politics and THANK GOD no "body positivity" or fat acceptance. NO you are NOT beautiful if you're obese or worse, morbidly. You are NOT "fine the way you are" there is nobody more privileged than an American fat person. People don't get fat from being poor, obesity is a condition of OVER CONSUMPTION. There's no such thing as a food desert, it just means you might have to travel farther, get over it. If your children are obese, YOU are a BAD parent. You can't be an environmentalist and be obese, because obesity is one of the main causes of global warming. A fat person has double the carbon footprint, they also can contribute to a 300% increase in fuel usage because they over consume food which is usually highly processed food that is packaged in plastics and also needs to be transported from long distances. Obesity is the cause of a national security crisis, because we currently do not have enough men and women in the 18 to 24 age bracket that meet the physical requirements because they are too fat to qualify. Obese in young women is so high that it's causing a huge drop in birth rates. Because obese women have a much harder time getting pregnant for one thing. Second, 60% of obese women 24 to 32 are single because, well, we all know why. Because very few men, only about 3%, are willing to date, sleep with or marry a fat woman, understandably. There are many more reasons why being obese is bad, these were just the tip of the iceberg

I’m noticing that nearly all the comments here are from people whose connection to fat people is just hating them, which makes sense because people who are actually overweight or obese are probably watching this in shock. I have never had a BMI over 26.5 (overweight by 1.5 points) and I also have never had a doctor who didn’t blame any health complaint I had on my weight. I had a seizure and guess what my doctor’s first recommendation was? Turns out losing weight doesn’t help with a gray matter heterotopia. There is tons of research that shows that doctors are just as, if not more, discriminatory against fat people as the general population. Nothing about the original video you are commenting on rings true to me.

I'm 5'3" 130 (fit, I lift weights 5 days a week) and I am size 2-4 in pants and size 6 in blouses and jackets. There is no way I'm that small. What has happened is they changed sizing because they don't want fat people to feel bad because they are a size 40, 50, 60. I can't believe they sell T shirts that are XXXXXXL That's ridiculous.

Since when did obesity became a choice? Nobody chooses to be sick from fulfilling their basic need of food consumption. However, it is a choice to stop feeling sorry for yourself due to a disease you did not choose. Just because you see a person who laughs but their weight is irregular, it does not mean you know their medical records nor by looking at it know their mental stability. Nah, don't buy that society ever told doctors to stop telling it how it is. More like too many doctors instead of actually telling it how it is which requires caring for their patients and curing them, they prefer to find other clients or profit from their misery. Weight loss and cosmetic surgery industry is not new to the game of making people feel sorry for their body image. Want your patient to lose weight? Find out why. Nobody eats to the point of physically hurting themselves without having a mental or physical issue underlying, I don't see how people faill to see that...

Obesity is indeed a complex condition influenced by a variety of factors, including genetics, environment, and socio-economic factors. It's crucial to approach this issue with empathy and understanding, as individuals with obesity often face not only physical but also emotional and psychological challenges.Your perspective highlights the importance of a holistic approach to healthcare, considering both physical and mental aspects of a patient's well-being. There are people who are thin and just as unhealthy and "morbidly" obese people that have no medical issues. The problem isn't the medical issues, it's society wrongly insisting that thin is automatically healthy and fat is automatically not. Are there issues that tend to come with obesity, yes. Maybe an increased risk of certain types of issues? Sure. I'm not ignorant. What I am is sick of doctors telling people to lose weight before doing anything else. *morbidly is such a horrible term that makes people think that there's nothing they can do considering the word is associated with death. How can anyone be expected to tackle their weight when it really is a health issue when the medical profession is telling them they're already dead?
@DoctorRich

You make an important point about the perception of weight and health in society. It's essential for medical professionals to focus on an individual's overall health rather than making assumptions based solely on their weight. Encouraging a holistic approach to healthcare that addresses the specific needs of each person is crucial. Using more empathetic and constructive language can also help individuals feel empowered rather than discouraged. Thank you for highlighting this issue.

Being fat is automatically unhealthy and that's a fact. All your arguments are subjective. Furthermore what do you want doctors to do on a 500 pounder before making it lose weight. You sound like you have a better solution. So let's hear it. Or do you mean give them painkillers, because those won't solve hearth and artery issues. Just because being too thin is unhealthy doesn't mean being fat stopped being unhealthy. One bad doesn't make up for another. Both are equally unhealthy in different ways.

I'm in favor of fat shaming. When I was in HS we had ONE fat kid who wouldn't even qualify as fat by today's standards. This problem has become a national security risk. And by the way, we identify drug addicts, alcoholics etc. as having a bad problem. This is NO DIFFERENT. For Christ's sake, do any of these people look at themselves before they leave the house? Some of the stuff they wear like I want to see their blobs of fat hanging out is disgusting.

It's important to approach the topic of weight and health with sensitivity and empathy. Fat shaming can be hurtful and counterproductive. Addressing obesity and promoting healthier lifestyles is a legitimate concern, but it should be done through supportive and constructive means. People's experiences and struggles with weight can vary widely, and it's crucial to encourage positive changes without stigmatizing individuals. Open and understanding conversations about health and well-being are more likely to lead to lasting improvements.
