A family living at a campground in Peterborough, Ont., says they’re being ordered to leave - despite paying for their campsite since arriving.
Shanna Miller, her husband and three children have been staying at Beavermead Campground since May 10. Miller claims severe medical conditions have kept her and her husband from regular work. In February she says “unsafe conditions” at a rental home forced the family to leave.
Unable to find affordable housing or shelter spaces in the city for her family, Miller says they pitched their tents in the campground and have paid for their extended stay.
“It’s not something I thought I would ever have to deal with,” she said. “It’s been a year since I’ve been looking for another place to live. I haven’t found it.”
Global's Robert Lothian reports.

Why is there not a safe place to hire these services, Is there a job bank for students and adults, where they can be vetted and available for work. The most fkd up part of this is that due to court rulings regarding homeless encampments Beavermead would not have been able to kick them out if they were problematic and did not pay and squatted instead. First of all, two kids, 3 dogs. Why 3 dogs? Dogs are expensive. That's irresponsible. I'm alone and won't get a dog right now because I can't afford it. They also look like purebreds, so costly to buy. Between three adults, they can't pay rent on an apartment? They could rent a decent house for $2500 and split it 3 ways. Yes I have empathy for some, but when I see neither works and all of that extra baggage, they need to be sensible.

City parks in Vancouver, Edmonton, and Toronto, turning into campgrounds, are examples of rampant lost emergency shelter space and no new rental units being buillt in the last 10 years. Canada needs every year over a million new affordable rental units and government subsidized social housing units for those on welfare all because of Prime Minister Justin Trudeaus' Federal Immigration Policy currently in place. 500,000 new immigrants are expected in 2025 and every year forward, which will flood into Vancouver, Edmonton, and Toronto and nowhere else.

There is no difference. It's just that unhoused is technically more accurate than more accurate than homeless for most people. You can be unhoused and not homeless (if your family house is too dangerous to go back to), and you can even be homeless and housed. This is technically a lot of people. Do you own your house? Most people don't. They rent. You wouldn't call him homeless but, but they sure don't own a home. And you can be unhoused pretty damn quick.

A quick Google Search and the average price for a campsite for a week is $300 so about $1200 a month. Average rental price in Peterborough is about $1500. Seems like we are missing something here.....why not rent a place in Peterborough instead of a campsite in Peterborough.....or are they not paying the campground? Why would a campground care how long you stay as long as you pay? Someone paying long term is pretty much guaranteed income why kick them out if they are paying only to have the site sit empty on the potential that someone might rent it. These people if they are paying are guaranteed rental income.

There are 16.4 million housing units in Canada, of which 235,000 are considered short term rentals. I don't think it has a big an effect on real estate prices as you believe. The real reason for housing price increase is the old rule of supply and demand. It has very little to do with investors buying up property, and more to do with urbanization. A friend retired and sold his home in Toronto for almost $2m and moved to Theodore, Saskatchewan where he bought a comparable house for only $13k. He went from a city of 3 million to a village of less than 350 people. Now this isn't a viable option for most people, but I don't see any reason people living off the government dime can't move to a city where housing is more affordable. Instead the dumb twats live somewhere they can't afford and complain about it.
