Uniden R4 vs. Uniden R7

I Bought an R3 and after a week I returned it for an R4 that I got for cheaper than what I paid for the R3. I love my R4 and when I found an opportunity to get a used R7 for a good price I went for it. I was planning on returning my R4 but I couldn’t part with it so I decided to give it to my fiancé. We will marry soon so it made sense to have a detector in her car as well since it will also be mine soon😁 we got the best of both worlds! Arrows in one and super long range and Bluetooth in the other! Both have saved us quite a few times already!!!

Let me go ahead and say this! I just got my R4 2 weeks ago and it is a beast! I will be doing some vids soon to show! There is this cop that sits up on the highway and my R4 started alerting me 1.4 miles before I got to him and there were 2 curves and 3 hills between where he sat and where the R4 started to alert me so people I really think uniden bumped it up pretty good! And for the people that have said before that vortex has received juiced up detectors, well what my R4 has shown me has threw that theory out the window! If anything, I think my R4 may have alerted me sooner than vortex got on his barn run! Very impressive!

I just got an R4 (photo radar all over NYC lately), and to me the biggest pro is the smaller size vs the R7/R8. I also tend to mount detectors right in front of me (visor or on the dash) so the tilted displays of the R7/R8 would actually be a huge con.

Short vid like this about R4 vs DS1 would be cool. I'm loving the range on my Radenso DS1 BTW. I'm amazed at how far away I can detect even tough off-axis Ka around hills and trees, etc. It's amazing, especially coming from a DFR7 which was pretty good, but sometimes I would have liked more range on difficult Ka and the DS1 is head and shoulders above the DFR7 in that regard. -edit- especially 34.7

People with the r3 says arrows isn't that big of a deal they'll just slow down when they get an alert. But EVERYONE who upgraded from the R3 to the R7 says they won't go back. Arrows helps you determine the location of the radar Source much quicker than not having arrows at all. R7 ALL DAY!

Arrows are useful yes. Sine qua non , no. Many have driven without arrows for decades. This argument is as old as V1s arrows patent.

For me, I have the R3 and I have the R7 in my wifes vehicle. I love the arrows of the R7 but I also love the more compact size of my R3. I like putting the Radar Detector as high on the windshield as I can and as close to the mirror as I can and from the outside you can still see her R7 and you can't see my R3. I wished they could add the arrows but keep the smaller package, more like Escort has done, but for my driving the Unidens seem to be better because I am 95% Highway driving and 5% City driving.

Boy… I wish it had arrows. The smaller form factor is a big plus in comparison to the R7. I’ll keep my R7 for now as my “travel detector” while V1G2/JBV1 is top dog in my eyes for a daily driver. I’m against using the Theia-word, but maybe some day we can see the best of all worlds combined into one

You have such great videos. :) I got the R3 a year ago because of your channel and "The Cannon Ball Run" video I saw also. The longest the R3 has detected KA was 2 miles in line of sight and 1 1/2 miles around a curve when the radar bounces off traffic ahead of me! Uniden works great for me. I am different than most people I was using a V1 since 1999 till about a year or two ago and now I run a R3 and honestly I do not miss the arrows… I do the prudent thing when I hear and see the detector go off I slow down and to me it does not matter where the signal is coming from….I slow up until the signal ends

Heres the biggest advantage of the r4. Mute button on the front. Thats enough for me to get the r4. My r7 is currently on ebay because of that poor button placement. I find myself marking areas all the time instead of muting.

They need to start offering trade in options. I have an R3 and 2 R7s. And as much as we harp on the arrows, it seems like in the past few updates, they’ve been acting wonky. I drive 120 miles a day, 5 days a week, so, I have a lot of familiarity with falsing and arrow directional issues. I’ll get a mile of a lock that starts behind me, and all of a sudden, it flips to in front of me. So, it’s not a signal that’s passing me. Luckily, I’m in California and I have K & X band off.

@@joem5589 Let's just say once you have arrows you won't go back. I personally love the Instant feedback so I know if it's a false alarm (happens with some Honda SUVs) or if it's ahead or behind. Makes for a much faster reaction time and less distraction overall so I can focus on driving.

The screen angle on the R7 isn't good for us right hand side drivers, and the size put me off as I use my RD for motorcycle only. The R4 suits my needs as it is small enough to tuck under my windscreen on my bike, hopefully they update it soon and enable the bluetooth connectivity. If the R7 was smaller and had a front facing screen I may have chosen that one, but for the BT alone it was the R4 as connecting a helmet to a bike through cables sucks lol. Same thing with the R8, it's too big and the screen angle is wrong for right hand side drivers.

Help me understand why arrows make that much of a difference? I've had a Uniden R3 for the past 4 years and it's gotten me out of quite a few potential tickets. When it goes off, I slow down to the speed limit until the alert disappears. How does having the arrows change that? Just because the arrow is showing the alert is behind you, would that make you ignore it and continue to speed? If comparing any detectors, tell me which ones have the least false alerts. That's what drives me crazy. Every SUV you get behind sets off the detector so you constantly have to mute it. Maybe that's cause the R3 isn't a top of the line model so you get what you pay for...but my next detector needs to have better filters for the false alerts from all the vehicle sensors these days.

Those arrows simply provide additional information. To some this is useful, to others not so much. User preference. As far as false alerts and filtering? Not going to happen. Too many stupid sources for lazy people and it's expanding exponentially.

Coming up on a roundabout with a constant on threat being broadcasted 90* from you could give you much earlier alert Depending on what you drive, any Ka in detection range at all might be close enough to notice you

Like the Uniden R4 unfortunately it false more than my R3 and at times can drive me bat sh*t! Hopefully Uniden can address this in the next firmware update? Although I like the arrows I prefer a good ramp up and audio alerts, but to each their own.

Did you configure it using Vortex's recommended settings? If not, did you configure it yourself using the settings under "Advanced"? I'm asking because my buddy complained about falses until I asked him these questions and he started digging into the menu. Even just setting "Quiet Ride" can dramatically change your experience...

IMO, sometimes, longer range is more annoying. I agree with the "around the corner" but for some of use who live in areas where it's not that hilly, nothing is worse then your RDD going off for miles before you see the threat. I'd love to see a segment on where detectors ARE illegal. Example, conflicting info on Mississippi for example.

I live in WA and the R3 is still a fantastic detector. R4 would be nice but IMO not worth upgrading but could be a great option if you don’t already have a detector and dont mind spending a bit more. R7 is great too but IMO its too bulky

Agreed, the auto mute is total garbage and they haven't made any noticeable improvements. I drive by a speed sign every day and in 4 months it can't learn it. The range is either not far enough, or the frequency drifts too much due to temperature. I think this will be my last Uniden for now.

@@VortexRadarI think the only real benefit is if the radar is from the rear in a moving car, other than that it’s simply psychological in nature…knowing where your threat is located and the satisfaction from it. Anyone who is receiving a valid radar threat should slow down regardless of having arrows or not! The arrows are simply confirming what the beeps were warning you too.

I love my R7 and wouldn't trade it out for an R4. I agree with your position on price. If Uniden was smart, they would have set the price slightly higher than the R3 to get those customers to upgrade. Setting the price close to the R7 was stupid. They will lose sales because of it.

It's the lack of arrows. Since the R4 is arrowless, it is an upgrade to the R3, not the R7. The upgrade for the arrowed R7 will presumably be called the R8.
