Welcome to our first episode of 2019. Today we'll be covering the, first of its kind, digital camouflage patterns more commonly known as CADPAT.
Again we'd like to thank everyone who pointed out some of the missing bits. So hopefully take two on CADPAT paints the larger more complete picture.

I saw CADPAT in person for the first time around 2011 and remember thinking "Hey, that's smart! They learned from our UCP mistake!" Now I find out they've had it since the 90's. Makes me even more mad about UCP!

@@jasonarmstrong5750 Actually, Colt's sales reps misheard that the gas tube was self cleaning (it is), and relayed that the entire weapon was self cleaning (it is not). UCP, or as I call it, "phaggottephlage," is the most hysterically bad example of fraud, waste, and abuse ever, even compared to the rest of "Program Executive Office Soldier," which sounds like, and is, where you stick every fuckup you don't trust with an actual command. Listening to the bleats about how it was the greatest camouflage EVAR INVENTED! would be hilarious if it wasn't pathetic.

Fun fact: The "embarrassing" woodland camo in Aghanistan actually proved better for blending into the local terrain once it faded than some other NATO country's dedicated desert schemes did. Which shows how something as simple as color intensity/brightness/saturation also plays a big role in camo design - intentional or not.

Very true, i actually have some old tiger stripe camo that faded, but it works well in fall as it blends with the duller browns due to fading, is green enough to blend with what left over green we have and even frost due to the whiteish exterior of it, great effect for hunting….. the more we learn about camo the more we seem to learn that fading is not really that horrible and in many cases the idea of fewer patterns can work across many environments if you use the right base, which turns out is grey….. no green….

Doesn't shock me because there was a little known hunting camouflage design that blurred that edges on its large colored blobs in the pattern like a sawtooth. It fooled your eye a lot quicker at distance that solid curvy lines did. Nature is made up of fractals, which is why fractalizing your camouflage works well.

I notice now with British vehicles at least, when they want to camo them up they use camo blanket material and/or foliage rather than just relying on the paint camo. Since out in the open you're going to be on the move and making a lot of noise, and possibly showing up on thermals, disruptive camo paint schemes have been less important, and if you're not out in the open and on the move you'll be wanting to enhance your camo with foliage or a hull down position whenever possible anyway.

One big problem with the Cadpat is it got too dark when it was wet. And I often see a lot of brown and light brown in training areas I've been to, like long dried grass, fall leaves, and brown leaveless bushes. New pattern we're testing has a lot more brown and hopefully will solve the problem.

that's a very accurate assessment that a lot of camouflage designers don't understand until it's too late. Most environments are brown-dominant year-round. After all, how many woodland animals do you see that are completely green?

That said, yeah, the ground is always shit brown year round so if you keep cycling vegetation on you for over half year here you'll be able to blend in.

I was enemy force back in the day (1977), for a reserve CLC course. I was told to place myself in their path, and open up at their worst moment. The first indication of their presence across an open field as they advanced out of a tree line, was the course officer's map board reflecting sunlight off the plastic like a mirror, and a DS instructor's British army DPM jacket, which had brown in it, and showed up like a flare. The old green combats worked in a temperate forest, and worked excellently. I also watched German infantry appear as if by magic out of the fog on a foggy morning in their grey-green uniforms. Cadpat IS amazing- I've seen a trailer disappear against a wooded background- but the lesson here is environment, and the Canadian army (as well as others, I've seen Afghan officers dressed in temperate combats, which was ridiculous) wants a Swiss Army knife approach, because they're cheap, and don't give a rat's about the military. Ask me about vehicles and prairie and winter cam sometime. You can't give a soldier a jacket and say, go wear this by the seaside, you'll be fine. They won't know you're there.

Great video, it was very interesting to learn about the history of CADPAT. One thing though, Multicam is considered to be a digital pattern even though it's not pixelated. This is because it was created using the same or similar methods and processes as CADPAT and other well known digital patterns. Digital patterns don't necessarily need to be pixelated nor are all pixelated patterns digital, the old desert night parka used by the US during Desert Storm is an example of this, it's pixelated but it's an analogue pattern. One other thing, I don't know if your channel is monetized or not but if it is, be careful with your use of footage not your own in your video. There's a channel that I follow that covers mlitary hardware and he uses lots of footage from manufactuers and various militaries to talk about his subject and KZbin recently demonetized his channel because "recycled footage" baiscally. They did this with no warning nor even telling which videos in particular they didn't like. So be careful if you're monetized, KZbin doesn't really seem to care about fair use.

I'll agree with you that in places like Moose Jaw or Suffield, that's certainly the case, although almost all temperate woodland patterns suck there anyways (hence why the Brits used Desert DPM until they went with MTP). Up in parts like Edmonton or Wainright though, it's fairly green, and Multicam can really standout vs. CADPAT. Truth be told, most of Canada is more like the latter than the former... We need to leave the digital camo in the past. We should be adopting something like A-TACS FG/A-TACS AU or like CONCAMO. It’s pretty ridiculous when the civilian camouflage market has better patterns than our actual armed forces. We should be giving our boys the best of the best. Digital camo is a thing of the past. Organic pixels and the pattern within a pattern algorithm used in A-TACS and the confusion algorithm used by CONCAMO are the future. And it’s sad when I say the future because A-TACS first came out in 2009. Which is 11 years ago. We should’ve jumped on it then. Instead we’re still using an outdated digital pattern from the 90’s.

I think the rotation with Canadian troops that arrived in Bosnia in summer 2001 was the first with CadPat, so they had Canadian troops with two different uniforms there for a while. It would be interesting to see a video on the Swedish M90 camo, since Sweden is probably the only country that uses it. Estonian and Latvian troops did however use it when in "Camp Jussi" and "NordPol barracks" in Doboj northern Bosnia. I guess the Swedes supplied the uniforms for them and they just stitched on their own flags back in 2001.

I was deployed to Africa on a UN Mission in 2001. The 2,000 or so Canadians in the Balkans were in brand new CADPAT and the Canadians deployed everywhere else overseas (like us) were in monochrome green (our official way of saying OD). There was a Finnish guy on the mission and he said to me once "hey, we're the only 2 countries out of 42 still wearing 1960s uniforms..." Not exactly true as the guys from Benin were wearing French satin 500 OD and the Nigerians tended to rotate between a cam and non-cam uniform. I mention this because there's a comment above about how good the Finnish uniform is now. Ironically, the guys from Tanzania wore a DPM pattern made in Canada with same cut, pockets etc. The DPM was similar to UK's (colours slightly different). It was created for Tanzania in the early/mid 70s and, since there was a ton at Peerless Garments of Winnipeg, it got used for our Para smocks worn between 1974 and 1995. Another irony of the mission was that while we had 2,000 soldiers in the Balkans, the Balkans were sending UN Military Observers to Africa. They consisted of Bosnians, Croats and Serbs - all in a common uniform (US woodland) with the same Balkans patch on their sleeves. Makes one think...if you still have thousands of NATO soldiers in your region to keep you from murdering each other...maybe you have no business sending your soldiers to keep the peace in other countries...just sayin'

Expensive in the mid 90’s with 4 uniforms and 8 pairs of boots for Canadian army. You had two dress uniforms summer and winter , combats and garrison dress. I find it amazing how much newer uniforms wear and fail prematurely. You can see this with surplus sales of these items. Boots of several types fail quickly compared to the older combat boots.

Just recently bought a CADPAT jacket online from a Canadian surplus store (size is a bit too small to fully wear but not enough to wear it without buttoning it, luckily the store kept the manufacturer tags and they sell my size online at the same prize), and as much as I love UCP as a guilty pleasure (I will freely admit that it was a terrible pattern and its retirement was long overdue) to the point of buying both UCP-patterned BDU and ACU blouses, the CADPAT jacket blows them out of the water.

Wasn't the US Army Natick labs involved somewhere? I've seen mention that they first broached the idea of digital camouflage patterns, which the Canadians noticed then ran with.
@I_am_not_a_dog
@I_am_not_a_dog 5 жыл бұрын
Pete Sheppard Yeah, they had been experimenting with digital and “imitation digital” camo for years. The “imitation digital” is actually a misnomer, and preceded digital patterns. Essentially, the patterns consisted of MUCH larger “squares” than you see in CADPAT/MARPAT. It was also far more macro-pattern oriented, not micro-oriented at all (no “jagged edges”). There’s definitely some pictures out there, but unfortunately, I can’t remember the official name of these patterns. There’s even some pictures that claim to have been taken in the late Vietnam era that show these patterns in use. When it comes to more modern digital patterns, Natick was definitely messing around with them during and before the development of CADPAT.
