Great video. I really like canadian army and specially the fact that their reserve militaries also works like regular ones and even if it's only 4 times a months that makes at least 52 times a year and that's great! Because in many coutntries, reserve soldiers are only at home and called maybe 1 time per year for a small training.

Hello Sgt Morgan, back in the late 80's I was a gunner for 2FD RCA. Sometimes I miss it. I'm so jealous of your gear. Our combats were ugly monochrome olive drab. I wish I were able to be a soldier again, but at 60 years old with disabilities ain't no way. Love your kit, wish I had it. Also, C7s are cooler than othe heavy FNC1A1s I had to lug.

Often you will get some equipment previously issued to another soldier, sometimes with rank or badges that are not correct for you so you needed to remove them of course. Some raw recruits either didn't bother or thought the military knew and would often get nailed for it. I was out for a while but went back in, but at a much lower rank for a period of time. I was awarded my CD before I had left, and as such, entitled to wear the ribbon on my uniform. Try wearing a CD ribbon with a private's rank. Sure brought down instant heat from above, especially from others not in my regiment who knew about my service. I always carried a copy of my release papers that showed the decoration had been awarded and sometimes the decoration itself as it had my name on it. I was issued a ton of kit, don't think I used half of it.

I miss the classic cadpat uniforms, and the black boots and OC t-shirts. I remember being told you can only wear tan boots and coyote t-shirt if you actually served in Afghanistan now I find it funny that it's standard issued now haha

True Story here. A particular Warrant Officer and his men were featured on a documentary CBC or CTV disarming trip wires at a small water pumphouse in the former Yugoslavia. Dan stressed to the producer that he and his men had to buy their own Leatherman as they were essential. About a year later they became issue. Went to the clothing stores in Chilliwack asI heard they were in as issue. The no good for nothing Log Wog told me as he was wearing a Gerber that I was not entitled. Much Better than when I was In the Reserves ( 1983-87) My webbing ( No Vest ) was I think 1964, My Rifles was Manu. in 1964 ( same day I was Born!) Black Boots they made us Polish which of course ruined the Waterproofing( I know this from the BIG Tag that came with them that said "Do not Polish....will effect Waterproofing) But they were Comfortable. Our Master Sergeant told us to wear two pairs of Socks. Cotton Sport Sock and on Top the Woolen ones issued. The Combat uniform was normally referred to as Garbage Bags ( I was a Skinny/Tall Kid so Everything was too big) The Rucksack seemed to be specifically designed to inflict Pain during Long Marches. We used to Compare Blisters! I left the reserves after fours years ( and being a Member of the Team the Won the Regiment Rifle Competition Three Years in a Row. I was told by the Regimental quartermaster to Turn in ALL my Gear incl. Beret with Cap Badge and Boots. To this day I believe that he was full of Sh&* and was selling stuff on the Surplus Market?

BIG difference between Infantry recce and Engineer recce (and armoured recce for that amtter). Infantry recce is WAY harder. Those recce tabs should be different for each trade.

So there have been some upgrades since I was in the reserves in the early to mid-90s. The only thing I think that we had that was better is the olive drab camo pattern which is no pattern at all just all Olive drab. Nothing blends into the bush better than olive drab, doesn't matter if you're close distance or far away. Most of the equipment we had seemed to be leftovers from the US from the Vietnam war. Do you still use the Carl Gustav? I hope not, that was a heavy pig to haul around. We should drive around in those ridiculous Iltus Jeeps. It was embarrassing. Our combat boots were low level hiking boots. The boots you have now look to be of pretty good quality.

Hi Desmond, I'm now retired but served in 2RCR and 3RCR I was on the original cadpat trials in 95? Give or take a year. I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure cadpat was designed by SAAB engineering in Sweden. Pretty decent video btw

I was at 2 CER for a while. Nice video for people interested in getting in. Just out of curiosity, you have an actual recce course? I’ve never seen a Sgt or above wear the tab after finishing their 6A’s and are in a “recce Sgt” position within the troop without having done basic or advanced recce. I could be wrong, but I’ve never seen it.

That is plenty of gear you all are issued and it is about what the American Army is issued also. I was in the Air Force and we was only issued our regular class A and class B uniforms along with our utility uniforms, black gloves shell, green gloves insert, 3 sets of underwear, a lock for our footlocker at the time, dress shoes (black), black combat boots, but now they are desert tan, field jacket and liner, and a duffel bag to store our gear in.

I hope that the designers of this gear at DND are listening to what features in the uniform the soldiers don't use and why (or what may be missing to hold the useful stuff in his smoke grenade pouches, for example). Design them out and find another place for maglites and bayonets, etc. (Maybe, bring in Sgt, Morgan as a consultant!)

I applied and was accepted to my local reserve unit. My interview was in early summer online....I am still waiting for my medical to return and the interviewer told me Im hired pending the medical...and that I will have to be patient because they are way behind. I have to admit it is very discouraging hearing nothing...But they told me not to worry and that I wouldn't be forgotten....so we shall see.

Aren’t the cat eyes only for NVG and IR? If its glow-in-the-dark doesn’t that defeat the purpose of identifying friendlies overseas if the bad guys can see it? They aren’t supposed to have access to NVG and IR which allows them to see it?

Where I come from our own Armed forces issue Bear tactical vest with Molle attachment system produced by NFM to regular forces, reserve and National guard, allthough recon units, SOF have plate carriers and warbelts, also generally speaking the rules are quite relaxed on gear- you can buy and use your own stuff as long as it gets the job done and is not in adversaries camo, except for the parades and displays , back in 2016. there was even cheaper simplified version with non removable pouches, but even those could hold up to 8 magazines and compared to the canadian tacvest it looks great, allthough in ours you can insert armor plates- I think the whole tacvest idea is obsolete at this time - those who have trained in TCCC, know how uncomfortable it is to remove tacvest instead of plate carrier and warbelt, and if there is flakvest and body armor under that takes extra time. It is like you have to wear 2 vests- where you could just have plate carrier and warbelt.@@BigCulpLarge

the new style CADPAT shirt was designed with Combat Arms Trades in mind as half the pockets were not easily accessible whilst wearing Frag Vest/Tac vest.

It's high-time we got new load-bearing equipment. The tac-vest is WAY behind in design philosophy and usability compared to the stuff thats out there now and what our partner nations are using. It completely lacks modularity and ammo capacity and I hope we get something better soon, and if we aren't at the mercy of procurement, I hope units give their troops the freedom/choice to use privately purchased stuff provided its of good quality. I can't attest to current standards, but during the time I was in regs BMQ was significantly shorter for res Regs did BMQ in St.Jean Sur Richelieu (spelling?) Res forces would do BMQ - Land. Dunno about currently however.

The newer Cadpat is arguably not as good looking but supposedly more effective in mixed temperate environments. I guess we will see lol
