To clarify, these are the prayers of consecration in the Tridentine Mass (often called “Latin Mass” or “Traditional Latin Mass”) of the Catholic Church. He whispers because of the sanctity of the prayers he prays and the silence in the church is a time for the assembly to pray and prepare themselves to receive communion. The reason he is reverencing the cup so is because Catholics believe (as Jesus outright states in the Bible) that the communion is the true and literal Body and Blood, and spiritual essence of Christ, who is God.

(atheist) Or is it that you do not believe in God (atheist) but you are not entierly sure you can be certain of your belief-or, better said, your skepticism about God (epistemically agnostic?) Still not making sense. What does it mean, as far the semantic meaning goes, for one to be agnostic but leaning atheist and to describe that as “agnostic/atheist” ? It just doesn’t make sense. Of course, I am not getting into the weeds of one’s personal beliefs. Which I am not here to critique, but what I did good for was a compelling account on what it means to be two opposing, and, by the same virtue, incompatible position on God. Also, I was not suggesting anything really (to your point on him being an ‘agnostic atheist’) what I was doing was, asking is my understanding was correct. That’s a different normative practice. One is, my take, of asking, the other (what you suggested I did) is of asserting. And yes, English is my first language, haha.

​@@IGNOBLEVOIDPEEKER agnostic means God is unknowable, usually it's an epistemological position, i think you have it confused with skepticism. it's not incompatible with atheism. a-theos means without belief in god a-gnosis means without knowledge of god.

Every gesture is full of meaning and gradually worked its way into the ritual over the centuries. Many of the prayers said here go back to the first 5 centuries and have been used by Roman Rite priests at nigh every Mass celebrated until the present day

I remember going to church, many different denominations, Catholic, Christian, etc, and studying it very intently. I remember thinking that same thing - the elaborate coping mechanism. I remember wanting to, at least for myself, change their minds, so to speak... Again not saying you must also. And then various philosophers inspired me to see it much more like @Runescapegal... All is exactly as it should be; Radiohead said it too: "Everything, in its right place." Right where it is. 😊♥️✌️

This is a particular form of Mass. Catholic churches are usually at a more standard volume than this. The typical Catholic Mass is the "novus ordo" mass. There is plenty of talking from the priest, the deacon, and sometimes the church laity. However, there are times of silence for prayer throughout, and it may even be quiet compared to a baptist or pentecostal service.

This is a Missa Privata (Low Mass), typically celebrated by priests on weekdays or by monks in monasteries to fulfill prayer requests. These are conducted without chant and with all prayers merely recited. The Missa Solemnis (Solemn High Mass) is celebrated with a priest, a deacon and a subdeacon, with all readings from Scripture and all major parts of the ordinary (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei) along with all the propers (Introit, Gradual, Alleluia, Offertory, Communion) chanted by the choir. The Missa Solemnis is more typical of a Sunday celebration or of major feast days.
