Today I returned to the Union Pacific Crestmore Industrial Lead to chase one of my favorite locals, LOB34. The power for today's job was unusual, where it was an SD40-2 & SD70M combo, with the SD70M having a K5LLA airhorn commonly found on SD70ACe locomotives. I chased the train the entire duration of its run. As of the uploading of this video the SD40-2 has been stored at West Colton for months.
I started off at Ventura Foods in Ontario, its first customer of the day on the UP Los Angeles Sub mainline. These clips are found in the rear of the video. After it departed the industry after picking u empty tanks, it headed for the Crestmore Branch.
My first stop on the branch was at the Bly Wye (Pedley Wye), where the train had the 70M in the lead, with a consist of one empty boxcar the train picked up from Bear Forest Lumber on the siding at Pedley, 5 empty tank cars from Ventura Foods, and a very special load, a bulkhead flatcar loaded with specialized hazmat containers of Calcium Carbide, destined for the California Acetylene Plant owned by California Tool & Welding Supply (CTWS). I've been waiting years to catch a move at this industry, and now i finally got some footage of it. Here at the wye, another local, LOB40 (the Cheeseburger Local), can be seen passing by on the Los Angeles Sub mainline heading to Arlington.
As I continued through the neighborhoods of Jurupa Valley, I caught the train many times on the way up, passing through Pedley, Sunnyslope, Rubidoux, and the industrial zone of Belltown, before catching the train dropping the bulkhead flat at CTWS. Since the train was up on the branch, they pulled a boxcar and centerbeam out of Builders FirstSource (formerly Dixieline Lumber in my older videos).
The train than began its descent down the line. The train pulled into the recently rebuilt run around tracks at Crestmore Heights, to run around their consist to go downhill. This put the SD40-2 up front. Back in Rubidoux, the train made another pickup from UFP, taking 3 empty centerbeams home to Mira Loma.
I followed the train downhill all the way to the Los Angeles Sub mainline in Glen Avon, where the train rocketed back west to Mira Loma Yard.
At the end of this video is the Ventura Foods switching footage, where the train met LOB86, another UP local, heading off towards Beaumont. Thanks for watching!

yeah there's around a dozen in local service down here with many yards using them as hump power or switchers

So nowadays SD70ms are now used for local trains? And do they now have a K5LLA since it is mostly used on SD70ACE locomotives?

70Ms are being used on locals and transfer jobs mainly now but some can go on the mainline. This one is the only one I can think of that has a K5LLA. Most have K3LAs
