It's a beast all right! A few additional gas turbine bit of trivia. I ran into a man who worked for UP back when these locomotives were in service, and he told me if you want to know what they sounded like stand by the end of a runway when a jet airliner's taking off. They sounded just like that! Also, the Bunker C fuel oil UP used was really cheap stuff. UP purchased some US Navy surplus Bunker C oil once that they got a very good deal on, and it was a much better grade than they were used to. The gas turbines ran like rockets with the Navy fuel! The major thing that killed the "Big Blows" was the price of Bunker C fuel oil jumping in price during the 1960's as a lot of it was being utilized by the plastics industry. That jet exhaust was hot all right, UP crews were told NOT to idle the locomotives under bridges and risk damaging the structural steel. One other use for the onboard diesel engine (And I've been told the primary use) was to move the locomotives around the yards when using the gas turbine engine would be a waste of power and fuel. It was probably a lot easier on everyone's ears as well! Good presentation Sean! Thanks!

Amazing engine and excellent history lesson. The stream was spectacular to say the least. I’ve searched high and low for a Legacy System and had one on order only to discover they are no longer being delivered to stores. Oh well, I dread the phone/tablet controller but I do have an TMCC controller so I’ll experiment with that. Also Sean, I just placed my order for benchwork from Tim Foley at Mianne Benchwork. He designed the benchwork based on the odd shaped room I’m using and it will have a lift gate. I’ll be checking your video again and again when I get to installing it and I will be wiring much like you did for controls. Having access from both sides I think will be paramount to operating. Thanks again for the info on that. I am really excited. Ok buddy, have a good rest of your weekend. Peace! Tim

Thanks for the video. Good history lesson and feature demonstration. Gorgeous train layout and train room! Did you build it yourself? A #69 Lionel Veranda GT is in transit to me and I am really looking forward to it! Assigning the same engine number to both units and turning off the coupler on the loco and the dialog on the tender is a simple setup solution but I want to experiment with assigning separate engine numbers and then forming a lashup. With the tender assigned as the rear unit. That should definitely take care of the coupler configuration, and allow for separate unit control as needed, if ever needed. It is unusual to have separate crew talk in both units of a locomotive set so it will be interesting to see how a lashup handles it. I noticed that a used TMCC Lionel Veranda in excellent condition was available on eBay for $650 but I think the modern features on this one of; rule 17 LED lighting, additional horn and bell sounds, additional crew talk dialog and speed step turbine smoke and sound activation make this one worth it.

I got the UP GTEL #69 and went right for lashing the locomotive with the auxiliary fuel tender but I ran into problems. Using cab/base firmware 1.70/1.60 I assigned the locomotive ID # 69 and the tender #68 and then configured the tender as an aux tender because that's what it is. I then built the lash up. The slide button settings for crew talk, signal sounds and coupler don't matter because the lash up software over rides that. I turned off the smoke because I don't want to be fooling with smoke when I'm trying to get the bugs out of a new locomotive like this. Crew talk, signal sounds and train link can be setup in the lash up build program. Using the build program I set the train to 69, assigned crew talk to the locomotive and signal sounds to both the locomotive and the tender. As the lead unit, train link does not apply to the locomotive. With everything set properly I pressed set and seemed to get encouraging responses from the locomotive and tender. All seemed simple and deceptively smooth. I was ready for some serious electric training! I turned the throttle and sound ramped up in the tender but nothing happened. Crew talk dead, horn dead, bell dead, elecrocoupler worked on front not rear, no sound effects in locomotive. Sound volume was up. Back up light on tender, dead. Addressing the units individually and everything worked fine. I worked on it for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon trying every configuration I could think of and nothing worked. I started thinking that I would like to see if the locomotive could fly but I decided maybe it's best to just give it a rest. Got to it this morning, turned it on and by golly the locomotive rolled as train 69! The other things still didn't work but at least the train moved. So I set the tender back to tender and reset the lash up and the back coupler fired! Only now the front coupler didn't fire. Back up light still no-go. I called Lionel customer service tech support. She was no help. I knew more about than she did and I was answering her questions. She said she would pass my case up to higher level tech support and he would be back to me today, which he never did. I noticed that the train seemed to change every time I set the lash up so I just kept resetting the lash up and finally the whole thing worked after only about 3 hours of wasted time this morning. Now with it in lash up. the control is much better and the units can be addressed individually if needed. The sound is much better. The horn has much more dynamic range, with the bass from the tender and mid range from the locomotive. Engine roar is in stereo. Wheel grind on straights and curves is in stereo. Crew dialog comes out of the locomotive as it should. Holding Aux1 for 3 seconds starts and automated animation mode which is a lot of fun. So I don't believe this is a hardware problem. I believe it is a firmware problem with the Cab2 firmware which is trying to lash up a locomotive with signal sounds and crew talk and its own rear elecrocoupler with a tender which has the same. This train has 3 electrcouplers, that's unusual. I think Lionel needs to update the firmware, which is several years old to accommodate this locomotive and maybe others.

Hi Sean. I am a regular subscriber to your Channel. I enjoy hearing the history of the trains. You have a great layout. So much to see. You do a great job of explaining how the engines work. I am always learning something new from you. You appear to be a very intelligent person and mature beyond your years. I am curious about how old you are. How long have you been collecting trains? Is the Legacy Lionel's Premier engines and cars? Great video. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to your next video. I'm in SoCal. What part of the United States do you live in? Thanks again.

I could have bought the older rail king version of this a while back. I turned it down. I’ve always steered away from locomotives that were unique. I’m different that way. I’ve always liked locomotives that were common. I have to admit your history lesson made me second guess my decision to turn the rail king version down.
