Welcome to the final segment in Union Pacific's Overland Route: America's Original Superhighway, by the Thornapple River Rail Series.
In this miniseries, part of our Superhighway specials, we're touring the entire Union Pacific portion of the first Transcontinental Railroad, long known as the Overland Route, nearly a thousand miles of railroad spanning from the Missouri River at Omaha, Nebraska to the Great Salt Lake at Ogden, Utah.
An incredible railroad, the original Transcontinental Railroad is today a superhighway of commerce, featuring dozens of freight trains of all types through the American heartland. From the lush framlands of the Midwest to the deserts of Wyoming and Utah, the railroad is as incredible and unique as any other.
In this final segment, covering the Rawlins and Evanston Subdivisions, we begin near the continental divide, on the western fringes of Rawlins, Wyoming. Progressing across the high desert through the Great Divide Basin, the railroad passes through sparse terrain, before rolling into the oasis of Green River, a crew change point and the beginning of the Evanston Sub.
The Evanston Sub finishes the run across the Wyoming Desert before dropping down the famed Wahsatch Grade into the Great Salt Lake Basin. The grade, for which the Challengers, Big Boys and Gas Turbines were built, represents some of the best western scenery on the Union Pacific portion of the Overland Route: America's Original Superhighway.

This is the fourth of your videos that I've watched, and you've set the standard, as far as I'm concerned,. The composition of the shots, the quality of the images, the historical notes, the maps and the audio all add up to a wonderful experience. I've travelled over the West for most of my life, partly as a long-haul trucker on I80, so can really appreciate the scenery -- good times. Thanks.

Evanston subdivision is an amazing place it is here that Union Pacific crosses the Wasatch Range. In 1869 this is where of the rails were joined. The Evanston subdivision is home of the Yards of Ogden 50 miles west of here the Golden Spike was driven into the ground since then Ogden has become the heart of the Transcontinental Railroad every train going to all corners of the West Coast go through this yard written on the side of the Depot is the city's motto "you can't go anywhere without coming to Ogden" known as The Junction City of the West Ogden has tracks running through it and all four directions on a compass the Northbound track heads to Butte Montana and Pocatello yard in Idaho where it connects with the OSL which goes to Portland. The westbound track goes over the causeway and directional runs with the Feather River route of Western Pacific all the way to Roseville on the Southern Pacific and Donner Pass East track is the Transcontinental Railroad itself which takes UP all the way to Council Bluff Yard in Omaha the South track is the Central Corridor which is operated by Utah rail and the Utah Transit Authority with Union Pacific and BNSF operating along the line via trackage rights this line goes all the way to Salt Lake where it splits into four additional tracks with the East line out of Salt Lake headed southeast to Roper Yard and then East via Soldier Summit to Denver the West track out of Salt Lake is the Western Pacific Line of the Shafter Sub it heads over Silver Zone Pass and enters Roseville from the North East Via Feather River Canyon. The south track and the southwest track go to the same destination Midvale Utah these are the Sharp Subdivision and the Lynndel Subdivisions Union Pacific uses this track and also BNSF via trackage rights to deliver cars from Los Angeles and Barstow this line is also known as the San Pedro and Salt Lake which stretches from Butte Montana to Los Angeles California and ends on Terminal Island in the San Pedro community of Long Beach. Freight along this line is mostly containers and domestic Freight most of the Manifest traffic goes to the sharp subdivision and is sorted at Roper all BNSF traffic is sorted at Provo with switching done by Utah Rail all Intermodal traffic is sorted at Terminal on the west end of Salt Lake which is the new yard that opened in 2003 to alleviate congestion at Union Pacific's Warm Springs yard on the OSL the former Intermodal facility is now home of the Utah Transit Authority Maintenance Center which is home base for the FrontRunner trains which are seen every single day except for Saturday and Sunday on the Central Corridor.

I have abstained from any comments until the entire series were viewed. That time has come. So here they are. 1. Entire series was entertaining, informative, and actually fun! 2. Kudos to you for your effort. 3. Sly observation -- I won't say for sure; but I think you filmed the same eastbound intermodal train several times, and each time it was shown, the train was father west. If not, it sure looked the same!
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries 7 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: this series was largely show in the opposite direction in which is was filmed. My father and I deadheaded from Michigan to Ogden, and then headed east over a week. So yes, that one intermodal, and oil train, too, are the same eastbound repeated in several distinct locations as me moved east throughout the day. There are some exceptions to this eastward rule, particularly around Sherman, but you're certainly correct in your assertion!

39:19 The Yards of Ogden themselves this is the jewel in the crown that is the Transcontinental Railroad 150 years ago the Golden Spike was driven in the ground near here but since Promontory did not fit as the junction of the lines they moved it to here Ogden. It is here where UP tracks end and SP, WP, Rio Grande, Utah Northern, and OSL tracks begin every day 1 million trains going to ever corner of American go through here.

Having grown up in Utah and living near Ogden for years, I remember seeing Southern Pacific trains heading west to cross the Great Salt Lake and UP heading for Salt Lake to continue west on the south end of the Lake following I 80 out to Nevada. What is interesting to note that those 2 lines now merge near Wells Nevada. So UP can chose both lines to head for Sacramento going over the Serra Nevada mountains

I know with the seasonal rain taking out the tracks on the Utah border and the feather sub close because ofthe destruction of Oroville Dam up we'll have to reroute most of it's traffic to get into Roseville. Recently on the SP side of the Transcontinental Railroad the rotaries were brought out of mothballs is always good to see those big machines throw the snow off of the Transcontinental Railroad.

Magnificent series. A small note. Every year around October, the UP closes Moffat Tunnel for about 2 weeks for preventative pre-winter maintenance, and the Amtrak California Zephyr is diverted around it from Sparks, Nevada, via Green River and back to Denver. Hi, just curious, what did I do wrong in the spelling and grammar department?
@J3scribe
@J3scribe 5 жыл бұрын
@@ThornappleRiverRailSeries, numerous misspellings in the forward, including "my" where you meant may, "with" where you meant without and "conset" where you meant consent. It may be nitpicking, perhaps, but when one strives to be professional, the little details count. But as I also said, I've enjoyed many of your videos. Top notch presentations all.
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries 5 жыл бұрын
Ahh yes, those typos. The first two were fixed in later editions (after they were pointed out after upload of the first parts) but you're the first one to see the issue with "consent" and mention it. Oops! Just goes to show how easy it is to slip misspellings by yourself. It's too bad I have no way to edit these now that they're online, because it is super easy to fix those captions, and in fact, my archival copies were updated to fix the errors.

@@ThornappleRiverRailSeries, the internet is rife with spelling errors. Frankly, most people don't even notice anymore because they are half illiterate. That's why younger generations resort to acronyms, and even many of those shortcuts are incorrect. lol

I'd love to, but the west end is a lot farther from home and with traffic density less than the east end, it'd be more of a challenge to get all the shots I need, with the split lines and all. It's not impossible, but it is improbable in the near-term.

Thornapple River Rail Series That's very logical. Especially within the Los Angeles basin. How about doing it as far as the Cajon Pass?
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries 7 жыл бұрын
Ahh, I think you're somewhat mistaken. The western half of the Transcontinental Railroad actually terminates in Sacramento or Oakland (depending on your definition), not Los Angeles. As far as Cajon Pass, you're thinking of the Santa Fe's Transcon. Speaking of which, the Transcon is another distinct possibility to cover...it is certainly on the radar. For now, we've got several midwestern projects to wrap and a few more coming!

Thornapple River Rail Series It wouldn't surprise me if I was mistaken. But then how does the Las Vegas line come into play? I know it's exclusively UP running through here. Never BNSF or CSX. Does the line go from Ogden, to Salt Lake, through Vegas, then somehow diagonally across Nevada to the bay area?
@IanPunter
@IanPunter 7 жыл бұрын
im not Thornapple but VERY qualified to answer your question. You got most of it right. It goes Ogden,SaltLake,Vegas then down to Barstow to join the huge BNSF mainline down to Cajon Pass,San Bernadino, splits from BNSF at Riverside, then to LA. The LA area rr map is very interesting and confusing, but it would take a long explanation.

I think that the Union Pacific engines would look better if they would paint the trucks and fuel tanks black. Or paint anything that is gray/silver to black. I even think it's time to get rid of the American flag. It's time for union pacific to have a new look, even go back to any of their older looks would be fine with me.
