What about the electorate who made Sinn Fein the largest party in N.I. They gave them a mandate, a much bigger mandate than the T.U.V. Democracy undermined by a man who can't accept that Brexit backfired, that Sinn Fein are the largest party, and the more he talks as he does, he secures more votes for Sinn Fein.

Sinn Fein and the SDLP have long had very capable and competent politicians. They come across as credible. For some reason the Unionist politicians are the complete opposite. I know most people on here tend to lean towards support for a united Ireland- I'm one of them- but Northern Ireland's people deserve politicians forward-thinking enough to deal with the issues that matter to the residents. The DUP seem to want any excuse to veto power-sharing. A few years ago it was the language issue, now it's the N.I. Protocol.

It is sad that such people exist. But, they do and they seem to represent a voice in NI. When I hear them rant like this, even the DUP, and I used to feel the same way about Sinn Fein 40 years ago, the thought that comes to me is that they are still fighting battles that are hundreds of years old. They are stuck in the past. They want to rekindle the violence. After the Belfast agreement, Sinn Fein seemed to grow up and see that their best efforts were in the democratic process. People actually agreed with their viewpoints so they have got more support today - hence being the largest party in NI. There are always going to be people who hanker after the days of William of Orange but what he was fighting for bears only a fleeting resemblance to todays world. Why do they want to refight old battles? I dont know how you get reality into the heads of Unionists.

Highly educated is a relative term in NI. His family had money and connections to get him through to his position . In NI it has nothing to do with intelligence wether you get a degree or not and if you get a degree it depends upon wether you are from the "right" party to get a place in government . You can see by his little tirade that legalities and election results are only valid when it suits . @@anthonywickham "Men like Jim were the driving force behind the troubles." Can you see now how this is a problem? I'm not sure. Maybe you do. The basics are, as you say, there are plenty of men like Jim. Men who will call for the bomb, and men who will bomb. It'll happen if there's a referendum. And in mounting talk of one. These people are sociopaths. Go up to one of them and say jokingly, "I bet you'd like a United Ireland!' and there's a fair chance you'll get your ribs broken. They're not great at reading tone. Of the people who want a united Ireland there's far less than 1% who want it at the cost of mass murder. Unfortunately they don't tend to think of unification and murder as linked, despite the Republic's formation. Now The Troubles generation ages, the Tories put a kabosh on legacy justice and the stories that are still being handed down are those of Loyalist prejudice and Republican fantasy. I stop at the question, well is the fantasy really worth the prejudice? Well is it? No, it's not fair. It's how things are.

On partition there was proportional representation in NI but when the Unionists saw the demohraphic was against them and eaw that their share of the vote had dropped in the 1925 elections, while they still had a majority they introduced FTPT, re-drew electoral boundaries and introduced a one man two vote system whereby a businessman had a vote were his business was located and another where he was resident. And it was in the catholic majority (and NIs 2nd city) of Derry/Stroke city, that the then unionist stormont regime brought in blatent local govt electoral gerrymandering. Thus allowing Stroke to have a unionist majority, with housing (mainly unionist) allocation. Hence the late 1960s NICRA protest marches (one man, one vote). It was then that the footage of the RUCs brutal baton charging of these, went round the world. And suddenly for the UK govt, the nightmare of the old (thought over and done with ages ago) Troubles were back..and with a vengeance

If anyone who hasn't seen it before, there's a video on KZbin called Stephen Nolan flags It's an hour long video and it shows us all what it's like talking to these people. So it’s very likely that most Unionists will be looked after in hospitals or care homes by mainly Nationalist’s in the near future. Maybe someone could try to explain this to Good old Jim Allister.

The UK Government should change the rules on the NI Assembly so that it meets the requirements of _Strand 1_ of the _Belfast Agreement_ while permitting the Assembly to operate without the presence of those who choose not to attend Assembly. In particular 5 d) arrangements to ensure key decisions are taken on a cross-community basis: (I) _either_ parallel consent. i.e. a majority of those members *present and voting* including a majority of the unionist and nationalist designations *present and voting* (ii)_or_ a weighted majority (60%) of members *present and voting* , including at least 40% of each of the nationalist and unionist designations *present and voting* I have emphasised the parts that make it clear that the lack of members of a designation being present does not prevent the operation of the Assembly as agreed in the _Belfast Agreement_

A large enough neutral party could be enough to satisfy that cross community basis. Hopefully over time more and more people will switch their votes from the polarised nationalist/unionist parties and embrace the likes of the Alliance party, or the Green party etc.. In the very 1st read out between Biden & Boris, after Biden took office in Jan 2021, the UK read out said "Nothing to see here" However the US read out was quite different. Biden mentioned his Irish heritage and specifically said that the NI Protocol and the lasting peace it ensured was so personally important to Biden that if it was tinkered with in any way, then all cooperation & trade between US & UK would have to be seriously reevaluated.. The reason it 8s stuck in my mind is that the UK BORIS read out mentioned none of this. Usually both embassies coordinate the read out's so they are basically the same. This is the 1st time in history that I remember a read out of a meeting between any head of state & POTUS was so divergent-

The DUP and other Unionists are not, and never were, interested in democracy. Their version of democracy is when they have many votes each when the Nationalists have either one, or in many cases none. (Dependent on house ownership and business ownership). Of course as the Nationalists were discriminated against as regards employment the Unionists owned the houses and the businesses. That's the type of democracy they liked and would want to see again. Of course the reason for their intransigence is because their position was, and still is, supported by Britain. Put them on a ship back to where they came from I say and let democracy prevail. They were geremandered into a majority in 1922 and backed by Britain ever since who was happy to look the other way.

I’m not really politically or religiously driven to any party in Northern Ireland but I’m fed up with this non-progress that seems to be ever present with the government. I live in Scotland now but keep fairly up-to-date with things at home as in back regularly. One way or another there’s been such extended periods were there’s no real governing going on and in reality there’s no actual representation of the electorate. Yes we face difficulties in Northern Ireland but so does everywhere else. Doing nothing, opposing basically everything, is achieving nothing. Glad it’s being called out.
