Videos like these are really priceless for dummies like me. Got no experience with everything you have on the table except for the laser bore sighter 😁. FYI - In my experience the eye relief tends to shorten as the power is dialed up. Therefore I usually set eye relief with the scope on the highest magnification. Enjoyed your very informative video. Thank you.

I used to hunt in the early seventies that was a kid with my father and my brother-in-law, the price of things that are just skyrocketed so much from back then it's crazy, I could have bought a 300 Weatherby mag what's the top of the line scope and a bunch of ammo, I realize everything is better today because of the technology and machining, but that is really a nice unit for $1,000 today.

thats impressive, back in 2003 we shot at 200, 300 and 500 yards with iron sights and all we were taught was about windage and elevation. No temp or barometric pressure stuff was important in the Marine Corps.

I have a Left in same gun and scope. I forgot tighten pic rail and i never use loctite. Never had a problem and taken many animals. None over 200 yards. Great gun and Great video. I do my set ups exactly as you are showing.

Though manufacturing processes have become nearly foolproof I still witness mark ring caps to bases BEFORE separating. No chance of interchanging or flipping 180° out (they're line bored before caps/bases are split). Will also bed the rail to the receiver (if needed) and use blue Locktite on the screws AFTER degreasing . I ALWAYS check ring alignment with dowel rods (WHEELER kit) and lap for 80%+ contact if I deem necessary. SOP in the military was to torque in 3 steps to final value. Waiting 5 minutes and lightly rapping ring cap screws after torqueing (with the plastic handle of a screwdriver) removes "thread tension", then check final torque one last time. A little "extra" in the beginning goes a long way to preventing problems down the road.😊

Fantastic video! We have capabilities available to us today that were only dreamed of not that long ago. I would like to add something if I may. Putting Lock Tite on the scope mounting screws acts as a lubricant while it’s wet. This allows much more torque to be applied to the screws than what the driver can detect. If you use Lock Tite, I would suggest not torquing to specs to avoid over tightening and possibly stripping out the threads.

Long list before leopold gets my money Vortex does great for about 1/2 the cost of leupold. And after that i step up to Nightforce, US optics, even a UHD Vortex before leupold. Have several buddies that are fairly serious shooters and money not withstanding consideration….. a couple of them chose a top of the line vortex over schmidt and bender/steiner…. Other very expensive very nice glass I just use the appropriate night force ATACR optic for my build.

Great video! BLUE locktite! Since some may not know the difference. For the lay person: Red NO. Red requires 550 degrees of heat to undo.

Remember, Loctite says their primer must be used with certain Loctite's threadlocker formulas if the metal that you are working with has any type of coating. I found it more economical to switch to VC3 because it doesn't need a primer, is cheaper, and has a much longer shelf life. Loctite's primer is expensive and has a very short shelf life.

Loctite 243. It's a "blue" formula for the tightness, but a bit less "runny" or messy than 242 which equates to Permatex and other "blue" locking compounds. All I use on threads of dirt bikes to rifles for the last 15 years. Get the larger bottle, store it upright, shake often, and waste a little through the nozzle so you get "fresh compound" with each use. ALSO, GREAT, GREAT how to video!!!

I've been using my Wheeler F.A.T. Wrench A LOT since I got it. On rings and mounts, riser, QD sling mounts, tactical lights, all kinds of stuff. I have a gunsmith's set of all sorts of bits to fit it it too. And I haven't snapped the head off a single screw, which is a real achievement for me. But I don't use the F.A.T. wrench to install all those screws, just to torque them down once they're close. Everything else you did looked good to me. I also go over all the screws one more time when I'm done.

Yes, and use a rat trail file to lightly round the edges of the rings and you'll never mar the scope's finish. Tally rings don't require this, but you did say $1000 max budget 😂

I have found the visual boresight method you describe to be more accurate than the laser cartridge... maybe mine was lesser quality... I also recommend checking to ensure reticle adjustments are centered before mounting scope on rings. Had a few from factory and bought some used where elevation or windage clicks were maxed out and was forced to uninstall scope and re-center, Max travel for many 1/4" MOA Leupolds is usually around 180 clicks, up/down and left/right. I upgraded my Ruger American Predator to a Hunter stock. Would have loved to have started with the Hunter version of the rifle. But I bought what I could find back then. I have 2 other Ruger Americans. They are a very good value.

I just found this channel & video earlier this morning & was very impressed with the content. As a decent shooter with little long range experience I found it easy to understand & now I want to build one of my own. I am looking at Leupold's website & see a Freedom VX that is made specifically for the 6.5CM. Would this be a better scope to get for the caliber or would a more generic one suffice? I also just entered the contest so maybe my questions will be moot.

Lol I have the ultimate shortcut for this. Inherit a remington 700 chambered in 300 win mag. It's an old school build but there was no expense spared at the time and from what i understand it was worked over by someone really top notch. Not sure what's all done to it other than a trigger or trigger work and a high end barrell and compensator(for the 90s). It's pristine, leopold scope is still crystal clear and from what I've heard it was a lot more accurate than my grandfather ever was. I'd love to be able to try and stretch it's legs but finding a place to shoot more than 100 yards around me is hard. Not to mention expensive. It's on the to do list for this summer though 👍

Just found your channel. You earned another subscriber. Personally, I'd still have used Loctite, red or blue. I never remove a screw that had Loctite on it without slightly heating it up slightly with a soldering iron. It's enough to liquify the Loctite without affecting the metal at all. Very well done video!

I think you should make sure your rings are lined up correctely. i also check to see how much contact the rings are making on the scope. most need a little lapping. you did the joe blow scope install which is fine and dandy but if you dont want that scope slipping under recoil they need surface area. of course with that little dinky crudemore it ll be ok they dont kick very hard.

I'm laughing my butt off, I own a Ruger American in 5.56, I have all the same Wheeler tools, same bench rest, and Leupold VX Freedom scope. I'm probably going to be picking up another Ruger later this year, they make a great rifle.

One little thing I might suggest, kinda rough up that scope on the base lightly. It will help that scope maintain its fit better once you start using it. Just a light scuffing. Great video though.

I've found also that u will enhance accuracy by proper tork of the stock screws. 35 trigger guard, 45 on the forward screw/bolt. For the Remington that is to say. Sendaro grouped 0.051 resently

Fun fact. All the torque specs from manufacturers are for a dry thread. If you lubricate the thread (loctite) it is a different torque you are applying. I've seen tubes ruined because of this. Especially cheaper grade scopes.

The chrono strapped to the barrel changes the harmonics of the rifle so it won’t be accurate/consistent so can’t zero it that way
