For those who are unfamiliar with the Thermite welding process, the red powder @ 1:31 is Foundry Sand which is used to seal the gaps around the mold. The grey powder @ 3:32 is Thermite which is a mixture of powdered Iron Oxide + powdered Aluminum. @ 4:25, the mold is preheated. @ 5:30, the Thermite contained inside the bucket is ignited. The high heat from the exothermic reaction produces molten iron which flows down into the mold. When the iron has solidified sufficiently, then the excess flash from the mold is ground off to make level and smooth the now repaired joint in the railway track.

This isn't happening in the US. Wherever this is in the first 30 seconds there are code violations happening all over the place. Railroad company managers and supervisors get a little testy if the line workers are not wearing steel toed boots and are wearing shorts. Insurance inspectors jack rates through the roof where they catch that.

YES, this process has been around for a very long time. At 7:22 ...removing the mold ....molten material pours out. There IS a documented ENGINEERING procedure on this entire process from beginning to end. I wonder how long the "cooling" time is BEFORE the removal of the forms. I would expect that ALL the molten material should be cooled enough to be in a "solid" state BEFORE the removal of the forms. In most ALL casting processes, "extra" material is used to "feed" a cavity during the cooling period. In order to know the answer, the Engineering Procedure needs to be known. Typical previous comment is nothing more than a generalized overview of the process. Nothing detailing this "cooling time" .....just "When the iron has solidifies sufficiently ...". I would NOT be surprised if this joint has NOT cooled long enough. .

I wonder if the Railway company had closed the line off to trains whilst maintenence crews fix the broken rail. It's India, so maybe they have to do repairs inbetween train times on an open line which is highly dangerous to crews and railway passenger's. I hope it isn't the latter and that they adhere to common health and safety standards but judging on the attire of the work crew, I don't think they acoomodate much safety standards.
