I want to do this to my stairs going to the basement. Will I gain any space in the basement? There are 12 steps going straight down.

in theory you will actually lose a little bit of square footage as the landing takes up more area than two steps would but it may help you gain a better layout in the basement making it feel larger

Mr. Glen, we are wanting this to the basement as it’s much easier to go up and down. The architect says he can’t do it without raising the main floor, but he can put a straight run of stairs in. Can you explain so we can understand?

Elaine D unless I see the plan, I’m not able to answer. Not sure why the floor would have to raised as a landing is basically one large tread and riser. Hope this helps
