Pre-Algebra on Khan Academy: No way, this isn't your run of the mill arithmetic. This is Pre-algebra. You're about to play with the professionals. Think of pre-algebra as a runway. You're the airplane and algebra is your sunny vacation destination. Without the runway you're not going anywhere. Seriously, the foundation for all higher mathematics is laid with many of the concepts that we will introduce to you here: negative numbers, absolute value, factors, multiples, decimals, and fractions to name a few. So buckle up and move your seat into the upright position. We're about to take off!
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.
For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything

i was always so confused whether to multiply or divide, but your explanation finally got me to understand! if you are going from a bigger unit to a smaller unit, it will take more smaller units to make up the bigger unit, so you MULTIPLY to make more! if you are going from a smaller unit to a bigger unit, it will take fewer bigger units to make up the same amount, so you DIVIDE to get a smaller number because it will take fewer units!

Anyone having trouble comprehending Sal's demonstration it might have to do with stepping ahead of subject. Going back a few and strengthening weaknesses builds a solid foundation in one's comprehension in mathematics. I do this all the time when I get frustrated and confused, I realize my issue is that I get too ahead of myself. I hope my advice helps, even if it's just a little.

For people who don't understand each prefix is 10x the prefix after it, ex.) 1m = 10cm = 100mm, So if you have 6 km that means you have 60hm and 600dm and 6000m. You need to memorize the prefixes then everything will be easy.

The metric is easily because the simplicity. The units grow or decrease step by step of 10 .Its not necessary to do calculations. Just move de decimal point and you wil find the result. It is a decimal method. Factor label method is useful to imperial unit not for metric system. This the ladder and the step: Kilo,Hecto,Deca, unit (metro or litro or grama),Deci, Centi, Mili.

I think being able to do this is pretty important. It's just a good skill to have for all sorts of advanced concepts as well. It depends a little bit on where you want to go in life, but generally speaking, to be sure. That said, I will agree that these older videos are a lot less clear. I would recommend the newer videos about unit conversion on Khan Academy instead.

That won't work when you are dealing with micro meters, pico meters, nano meters. Or when you're going from miles to kilometers or feet. The best way to do it is by dimensional analysis, it seems to take more time, but in the long run is better.
