Review of the rules in Astra Militarum 10th Edition Index of the Tank Commander!
Correction: BGNT cannot be used to shoot while in engagement range using Death Befitting an Officer because BGNT specifically states "controlling player's Shooting phase ". Although that is still ambiguous in my opinion.

I am in the camp that if running an armored company that Lord Solar stays at home. If you’re taking leman Russ anyway the points to a Commander isn’t much, generally another 20min, opposed to the fairly large invest,ent for Solar and his Command Blob. 2 Tank Commanders (one Grand Strat) supporting 2 Rogal Dorn, Eradicators and such. Also with The classic battle tank doesn’t really need orders so you can save on some there. Smart use of orders is something I’m com8ng into.

Honestly funny combo is to give the tank commander a vanquisher cannon and team it up with a demolished tank to be upfront as a melee tank due to its ability. Super swingy best combo for fighting knights

I tend to run all my tanks as tanks and usually Leontus can give enough orders for my vehicles. I may be running a tank list soon so I will reevaluate points vs benefits.

With my armored company I bring 1 TC with grand Strat and Leontus. That’s 5 tank orders. I have 2 Dorns, 2 Lemans, 2 artillery, 3 Chimeras, and sentinels. When you start building an Armored Company the Leontus command blob gets very pricey and costs more than a TC. It costs you a tank on the battlefield. The TC lets you keep more tanks in the field. A naked Leontus is good but only 6” order range. I like to run a naked Leontus to run with my Dorns and 1 of the Lemans then a TC with his 12” orders helps provide coverage with order range. Good to take both.

Great video! The Tank Commander is an excellent model right now! I think I would be running them more if Demolisher cannons didn't hate me, hah Best loadouts by my reckoning: Demolisher cannon, lascannon, multi-meltas (firepower!) Demolisher cannon, heavy flamer, heavy flamers (overwatch danger!) Battle cannon, lascannon, plasma cannons (long range backline support!) I think if you want any of the other weapons you're probably best served by the other leman russ variants, to save points and get their special rules. I have sadly recently dropped the enginseer from my list-in-progress because the 4+ invuln only comes up very rarely. But it is very nice to have so I wouldn't deny it to someone looking to protect a lynchpin tank.

Great video Sgt Steel! I think it would really help if TCs could give 2 orders per turn. It'd make Leontus less of an auto-include.

Given that tank commanders do not have the squadron keyword, is it the case that tank commanders cannot give orders to each other? Very odd.

Remember big guns never tire doesn't proc when shooting out of sequence as per rules commentary, so death befitting an officer is pointless when you die in combat. A solid nerf, and means you need to remember to screen that demo/ melta commander or his special rule is moot.

Great point, but even without the rules commentary it specifically states in the "controlling player's Shooting phase" which it would definitely not be during the opponent's shooting or combat phase, which is a bummer. I do feel like Guard is in need of several FAQs. This is one and also, good Lord, orders!

It says "as if it were your shooting phase" and big guns never tire is a core part of the shooting phase so it's fair to let it rip

great video as always. In your opinion, does leontus and the TC fit well together? is it "worth it" to use one of leontus orders in a TC?

I think Leontus plays a role in most builds, but isn't absolutely necessary either depending on list build and strategy. Leontus not only is more flexible, but when pair with a command squad with a Master Vox, has a 24" order range to ANYTHING Astra Militarum. But... if you are running 2 Tank Commanders and 1 with Grand Strategist, plus other buffing units such as Scout Sentinels and Autocannon Leman Russes... Leontus and his supporting elements may not be necessary. NOT buffing the tank commanders can be an advantage by only making them synergy unit and less of a shooting threat. Your opponent may be more likely to target other units, such as Rogal Dorns.

Agree, but I think for game balance, it has worked out well for Guard. I do miss Pask hitting on 2's but that was also messed up.

I didn't but it is only Leontus. I think they can fire on death in combat and disagree with TOs who have ruled otherwise.

That's one way people read it. I argue that it is part of the core rules of the shooting phase and therefore applies anytime you are acting as if you're in the shooting phase. I think the Out-of-Phase rules commentary is being too strictly interpreted. I mean, I am totally okay with being wrong too given BGNT specifically states "controlling player's Shooting phase", so that's fair, but if people say no because of the Out-of-Phase rules commentary, I disagree.

@@CadianSergeantSteelActually it cannot. The Big Guns Never Tire rule ceases to work since it is only applied to the Shooting Phase. Because the TC’s shoot on death ability is an Out-Of-Phase ability, no other rules can be applied to it, including Big Guns Never Tire. If you want more proof look at Mordían Glory’s recent adepticon game where he played Death Guard and listen to what the commentators are talking about. Hope this helps!

@jacksonwoodward8723 I'm going to respectfully disagree because: 1 - It's a core rule of the game. The rules commentary mentions special unit abilities, strategems, etc, but Big Guns Never Tire is a part of the core mechanisms of 10th edition. Plus you can fire overwatch with a vehicle after a unit has charged it. 2 - The rules commentary is getting out of hand is causing a lot of issues with the spirit of the game, rules intent, etc. There are some things when strictly interpreted play VERY differently than most people feel the rule was intended to work. 3 - Not all TOs are ruling it this way. I was unaware of the Adepticon stream that brought this up as I was there watching Mordian play (even briefly interrupted his game to cheer him on while walking by). The event staff called it differently there than elsewhere, and it's just too inconsistent at the moment. Once again, the rules commentary is becoming a complex legal encyclopedia that needs studies and researched to play this edition of the rules, which is feeling absurd. 4 - If we begin saying that core rules that are phase bound don't apply because of the Out-of-Phase clarification, does that mean Lone Operative doesn't work? It's a Shooting Phase core rule. Does the Eligible Target rule not work and therefore you can't target anything when it says "shoot as if it was the shooting phase"? Or perhaps you can target everything since the eligible target rules might now apply because it's out of phase. So I am going to disagree. I think that is way too strict of an interpretation and different from the examples given in the rules commentary itself.

@@CadianSergeantSteelI would agree with you entirely! I think that this is one of those weird niche rulings that make no sense whatsoever and shouldn’t be this complex to begin with. It’s the same problem I have with the Knight gallant how it is equipped with two melee weapons but RAW it is only allowed to fight with one of them. I think people should just use common sense and the Rule Of Cool (Like in dungeons and dragons) to determine rulings like these.

2nd comment to your original reply: I would agree that since BGNT has the phrasing "controlling player's Shooting phase", that would not permit you a player to use the Tank Commander's shoot on death ability while in combat, but not because of the Out-of-Phase commentary.
