United Airlines Declares an EMERGENCY on our flight from Wichita to Ruston | Hypoxia? | Dreamlifter

Janis and I saw a Dreamlifter while taxing at Jabara, in-route we encountered a lot more IMC than we expected. ATC had us climb to 11,000' as we were going to cut a small corner of an active MOA. After a few minutes at 11,000', I started feeling a little light headed and checked my O2 levels on my Fitbit watch and it was holding steady at 95%. Sensing that wasn't accurate I got Janis to get our Pulse Oximeter and it showed 91% before the battery died, so out of an abundance of caution I requested a deviation/lower altitude. At 10,500', I felt fine again which was odd because I have flown to 11,000' - 11,500' before with no ill effects. Then as we got near to Shreveport, LA, a United flight declared an emergency and had to divert from their intended destination of Cleveland that had originated from Houston.

Man, that was a trip! I can’t even imagine when it be like flying along, and hear a commercial flight declared emergency. I will say as I was watching my video. My first instinct was Ron, ask him what’s wrong! I know that would’ve been totally inappropriate, but I was completely nosy and wondering what was happening. Anyway, great flight to my favorite first couple!

Thanks Russ, if you caught snippet in the video I followed up and the plane had an oil pressure loss in one of the engines United sent a replacement plane and gave passengers $15 to get a snack. First time I’ve heard an emergency declaration while flying as well. You going to OSH?

It took a bit of digging to find out what happened! Glad it was something simple - still meant those poor passengers spent hours in the Shreveport airport.

Good job on the recognition of slightly hypoxic. You should keep some of those little O2 cans in the plane, great pick me up when at altitude for any length of time. An extra slice of pizza will help too!

Yea, never had an issue before, but recognized it and ATC was accommodating, just 500’ lower and I felt tons better, we’ve been looking at O2 kits in preparations to flying over the Rockies, good idea on keeping some O2 cans and pizza didn’t trick😜🤪😂

Yea we watched it take off, they made a big spectacle out of it, I mean if it landed it should be able to take off, mid field it was rotating….. Cameras didn’t do the size of it justice! Thanks for watching and commenting! Hope all is well your way!!!!

Pizza was a “Life Saver” Yea never had an issue with O2 levels before not sure what was going on, may have been slightly dehydrated as I didn’t drink anything that morning! We don’t mind the heat, better than cold 🥶

@@Parr4theCourse I like exactly 23"C, not more not less😊 Oh dear, you should always drink water right after getting out of bed, to get rid of waste!! Best is luke warm for the stomage. I always bring a bottle of water when going somewhere outside the city, since I'm always afraid my rusty old car breaks down. When flying I always have a bottle in reach winter-summer, also in case of deviation to another airport. Not drinking will most certainly do no good to any body. Combination with low saturation could damage your body. I've seen it myself. Got my friend just in time in the ER with saturation below 90 (went to 80) and his organs were already failing. Doctor told me it shouldn't have taken an hour longer, as he would have died. I love my saturation meter. It is a life saving tool in combination of knowing the signs. In this case my friend already clearly wasn't feeling well, but also started showing behavior I just didn't recognize from him and made me think about hypoxia. Glad you did what you did and got safely to that restaurant to fuel up. We don't want to miss you!!!!! Stay safe my friend!!!!

Great Flight. Thanks for taking us along. Well, it finally happened. I lost my sunglasses that I have worn for more than 15 years. Last week we were in Destin FL and I was playing in the surf with the grandsons. I got knocked over by a wave and my glasses came off. By the time I was upright, the glasses were nowhere t be found. 😒😒

We film in 1080P, I upscale to 4K in Davinci Resolve. Never found Goldilocks🤪 we were glad as well that all was ok with the United flight…. Have a Blessed Day!!!

Another enjoyable flight Janis & Ron. Thank you. I’m playing catch-up on your videos. Say Ron, regarding your oxygen levels you might consider also carrying a can of Boost Oxygen. I carry a couple of cans myself I got from Sportys. I also use them at night by giving me a couple of shots of oxygen just before I shoot an instrument approach to keep me alert. 😊 Don/NE Ohio

Yep, we’re looking at O2 options, never been an issue before even at higher altitudes, I didn’t eat or drink anything at all prior to the flight so most likely the culprit, but we are going to look into O2, or oxygen generators…..

Glad you caught that and got lower because I could definitely tell your radio calls weren't as clear as you normally are either. Love those cloud surfing flights. That's pretty amazing that you can turn such a long trip by car into a 3 hour flight in the plane. We have a couple pizza places that are only in the Dayton area and they usually have amazing pizza too. I'm glad you two got to spend the holiday weekend with Janis's father. Yea, we were at 11,000 for several minutes and it just kind of crept up on me and as soon as I realized it was affecting me, I requested lower. It was a bit ofd as it’s never bothered me before, we figured it was because I hadn’t eaten or drank anything…..

It's funny how, at first, it just looks like a single line of clouds, but it just ends up going on and on. It's pretty rare to be on-frequency when an airline era declares an emergency!

Yea, I almost flew VFR because it wasn’t “supposed” to be this cloudy, the airliner and us switched from center to Shreveport Approach at the same time so we were able to listen in until he switched to Tower….
