Thank you. It was good to see a defence of India on FF. The accusation is preposterous. I live here and for the life of me I cannot tell how India can be so bad for women. For sure, we have work to do - there ARE problems faced by women in India, and I cannot deny that - but surely we aren't so bad. In fact, in terms of per capita rape statistics, India ranks in the top 20 safest countries for women. But if one uses gross number of rapes instead, it doesn't take a genius to understand that a country of 1.4 billion will have more acts of sexual violence than, lets say, K.S.A. Also, I think Europeans are trying hard not to piss of Oil Producers like K.S.A. and Iran. India, being a democracy by contrast, offers a safer scrapegoat to fit the bill of a third world inferno.

I am from India and I agree, India is certainly not the best country for women but claiming it to be the single worst country in the world for women is completely dishonest. A country where women are free to vote, drive, work, voice their opinions can't be worst than actual countries where women are a second class citizen. Hell, we've even have female Prime Minister and President, with multiple elected officials and CM that are female in the parliament. So do I think India can improve? Absolutely, it has a long way to go. But being intellectually dishonest and defaming a country isn't helping anyone. Thank you factual feminist for your amazing analysis!

Yeah China, Iran and the rest were surprisingly absent from "opinion poll". Also, only 48 or so out of the 550 voters on India were Indian. How does that make sense? Also, the mathematical weighting per vote is uneven and this is just too few to determine anything. Even surveys about small towns take atleast 1000 or 2000 votes. Also how unsurprising that this comes after we snubbed Trudeau and the UNHRC's Muslim funded propaganda piece.

As an Indian, I can say that India is definitely not the best nation for women. But women in India have all the same rights that men do. To be honest, some of the laws in India are anti-male and pro-women. Rapes just like any other nation happen in India as well. But India has some of the lowest per capita rape per 100,000 population. Women in India are treated equally as men. They have access to all the benefits that men have and in certain cases even more so. To say that India is even worst than Somalia and Congo is catastrophically wrong. These polls are used politically to demean a nation on the world stage. India and America just victims of it.

Ronit Singh Soin Oh, really? So you're proclaiming that we all should give preference to 'feelings' over 'facts'? Well, i hate to break it to you, but your fucking feelings don't matter shit! The unreported rapes is not something unique to India. It happens pretty much everywhere. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/unreported-rapes-the-silent-shame-7561636.html . Also, a UN study of 57 countries estimates just 11% of rape and sexual assault cases WORLDWIDE are ever reported. Now, even if we take the rate of number of unreported rape cases in India to be 71%(as estimated by NCRB), it would still amount to a rate of 4.4 per 100,000 population which is again much lower than UK(around 18) and US(around 27). And I am not even taking into account hundreds of reported rape cases in India that are false and frivolous!

@midgetydeath I'm not sure exactly, but if I had to guess it's because feminism has actually had influence on a lot of Indian communities here in the US and India. And leftists love hating their own group/country. So, I'd actually wager a guess that some of these anti-Indian propaganda come from Indians themselves. IME, the most pointed, bigoted comments almost always comes from the group themselves. The most racist ppl ive seen against black people are black individuals. Most anti-Chinese are ethnic Chinese. The most anti-semitic individuals ive known are Jewish. The most anti-American people are leftist Americans. lol. It's like being part of that group makes them feel extra bold about attacking it and they feel super special by pointing out the flaws of others in their group. In the countries where women actually are treated like crap, the men wouldn't care to criticize the culture and the women wouldn't dare. They dare in places like India and US because these places actually have some measures of protection for women, it's just the crazier among the leftists/feminists who don't appreciate it and even lie about it.

I'm an Indian and I'm not going to say that India is the best country for women. Considering the 1.2 billion population and very high diversity, the number of crimes will obviously be high on numbers. But telling India is the worst nation is purely biased and being done on purpose. If not for factual feminist, there will have been no evidence to say that these polls/perceptions are far from truth. Unfortunately, this has already spread like a wild fire and leftists everywhere are debating with this data as the sole unbiased truth.

Nafis Zaman Fortunately no. India isn't even among top worst nations for women/human trafficking. It seems there is a three tier system with tier 1 nations being very safe and tier 3 nations being worst in trafficking. Surprisingly, India comes under Tier 2. In fact, there are more than 20 nations in the Tier 3 category. Thank you for pushing me to read about this! I'm sharing the articles for your reference. www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/slideshows/5-of-the-worst-countries-for-human-trafficking en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trafficking_in_Persons_Report www.rferl.org/a/the-worst-countries-for-human-trafficking/29327857.html www.unodc.org/unodc/data-and-analysis/glotip.html

Nafis Zaman Nafis Zaman Yup! And inclusive of marital rape,child marriages and acid attacks, India proves to be better than many other nations for women. Again, it's a country of 1.2 billion and the rate per 100,000 population is comparatively less in India and that includes the statistical expectation of unreported cases. And picking up isolated laws like marital rape doesn't throw right perspective on women's safety. Many western nations with anti abortive laws are more women friendly compared to India yet India passed justified abortive rights for women in 1971. Just because India gives abortive rights, it doesn't mean India is women friendly. Likewise, just because a country has laws against marital rape, it doesn't mean it's offering unbiased justice to women or men on marital cases. To correct your statement, you may say that no continent is entirely safe for women,men or children. I'm not going to turn a blind eye to all social evils existing in our society. But, it doesn't mean that each and everything can be connected to women and tag an entire nation as a hazard for half of the gender. India has two different groups of people- The educated urban vs the illiterate rural. Most crimes,superstitions,child marriages,poverty,over population,maternal and infant mortality,malnutrition etc etc are confined to the socially and financially backward people who are ruled by caste politics. Here, men,women and children are victims of it. On the other hand, there is an educated urban sector who can enjoy metro,fast food chain,nightlife,Tinder etc etc. That's why the National Commission of Women from Delhi reported that 53% of rape cases where false. This is done by the free modern women. After all, women are humans too. Along the length and breadth of the nation, we don't have a homogenous suffering for women alone. Instead, wherever women suffer, the whole community will be suffering as well. I'm not sure if I have shared my perspective in the way I intended to convey. But you can read up this article which was shown in the video. www.firstpost.com/india/survey-declaring-india-most-dangerous-country-for-women-is-skewed-superficial-distracts-from-fight-for-female-empowerment-4599581.html
@AmeyaVaidyaExEcutESC26 жыл бұрын
@Nafis Zaman I wholeheartedly disagree. The foetus is not a human capable of sustaining itself until birth, otherwise, we would have an extremely short gestation period for having infants. We do not have that, thus, it can be safely assumed that human young are incapable of performing vital functions such as breathing and digestion of food until after birth. As such, it is NOT a human, it is in fact a collection of cells in the process of BECOMING a human. Until such a time as the umbilical cord is cut, the infant is effectively a new organ of the woman as it does not even produce its own blood nor does it breathe by itself. It shares the mother's blood and the mother provides the oxygen and nutrition required for the growth of this organ until its ready to be delivered. Based on this, one can say that women enjoy bodily autonomy and are well within their rights to choose to abort this organ aka kill the organ as it is their body and their choice. The social implication of this action is important, yes, but in the eyes of the law, bodily autonomy is paramount which is why I am also against any form of circumcision, both female and male. Medical advancement today means that even males with possible risk of infection or problems with their foreskin are no longer required to undergo circumcision. Religion is NOT above bodily autonomy. No god(s) which claims to have created humans as perfect would accept them going away and mutilating themselves and their kids thus desecrating the very thing he created. This religious argument contradicts the very concept of religious oriented circumcision. The point I am trying to make by talking about both issues is that bodily autonomy is a non-negotiable requirement as the breach of this autonomy nullify pretty much every other law placed on humans. If you believe that a woman's bodily autonomy can be breached for abortion, then, there is hardly a reason to not accept the breach of her bodily autonomy when she is raped. That's how logic works. Please apply it.
@ajeetalbert916 жыл бұрын
Ameya Vaidya 28 weeks!! That's called the Age of Viability!! And it is called so because the fetus has a good possibility to sustain life in case we deliver him/her for emergency reasons. I'm not against abortions or anything but it's just that your reasons aren't medically convincing. The reference from Wikipedia regarding Fetal Viability- " According to studies between 2003 and 2005, 20 to 35 percent of babies born at 23 weeks of gestation survive, while 50 to 70 percent of babies born at 24 to 25 weeks, and more than 90 percent born at 26 to 27 weeks, survive." Source: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fetal_viability I believe our Indian abortion laws are fair by all means except for two reasons: 1) It doesn't consider to take into account the word of legally married man who wants to father the child. 2) It doesn't allow abortions more than 20 weeks. This one is practically good except in a rare situation when a young girl,say 12 or 13, is getting raped gets pregnant and it continues to grow beyond 20 weeks. Although it's rare, such incidents had happened. Currently, MTP act lists out 5 reasons for medical abortions. I strongly believe there is nothing wrong with these crystal clear objective reasons except for the two which I mentioned above. Any abortion can be done in good faith if 1: The continuance of the pregnancy would involve a risk to the life of the pregnant women ;or 2: A risk of grave injury to the her physical or mental health ;or 3: If the pregnancy is caused by rape; or 4: There exist a substantial risk that, if the child were born it would suffer from some physical or mental abnormalities so as to be seriously handicapped; or 5: Failure of any device or method used by the married couple for the purpose of limiting the number of children. In India, any woman can get aborted without anyone's permission if the pregnancy is under 20 weeks. As a common man, I see no logic for a woman to let that unwanted fetus grow for more than 20 weeks and then approach for abortion. When it comes circumcision, it's a well documented medical fact that male circumcision is as healthy as vaccination. - It protects the male against chances of infection. Moreover, it strongly protects against penile cancer which is a very big deal. - Almost every uncircumcised male harbors Human Papilloma Virus(HPV) in his foreskin. It doesn't affect the male but instead it affects the female. HPV 16 and 18 cause cervical cancer. So, on a long term basis, male circumcision serves to benefit females too. Your argument may be applied for female genital mutilation as they call it, because it doesn't prove to hold any medical benefit till date. It's only a pure religious or cultural belief as of now. But male circumcision is absolutely healthy. The baseless argument on autonomy cannot be applied to every issue. There are cases where the grown up kids filed cases against their parents for keeping bad names. We have parents who stand against vaccination. Some parents deny education in the name of home schooling. Pregnant ladies who smoke and drink causing birth defects in babies. Autonomy vs parental right is a hazy gray zone here. It's best to judge parents based on how responsible they are as parents.
@ajeetalbert916 жыл бұрын
Nafis Zaman I really don't have any say on abortion. Some women get abortions for medical reasons like prenatally diagnosed congenital anomalies or humanitarian reasons like rape. But there are irresponsible women who casually get abortions after unsafe sex or they are pissed off after a fight with the husband. So, I don't see it as a Yes or No choice. But I do believe that the Indian MTP Act is very much fair as it covers all moral grounds to perform a justified abortion in good faith. With respect to your other statement, I completely agree on the possibility that the NCW's report can be biased. Just like the Thomson Reuters study, even the NCW's study can be biased. But I believe the latter has more credibility when compared to a poll conducted by a private third party. More than the numbers, I'm only concerned about the idea which is spreading like a forest fire. Certain news have emotionally driven market value. The starvation,protest and death of 100 farmers cannot get the attention which the rape of one woman in Delhi got. I'm neither a feminist or anti feminist here. Neither am I a nationalist who is trying to defend India's name here. I'm a middle class citizen with a strong feeling that we are simply stuck inside the loop of our version of progressive ideologies and consumerism. Personally, I believe that the strongest and truest form of feminism is the Suffragette movement. Even there, a man named Edward Bernays had managed to manipulate the women to become consumers of cigarettes with his simple catchphrase, "Torches of Freedom!"... Now, the third wave is claiming to hold a torch. You should only question yourself to introspect the cause and effect of your stance on anything. Cheerio!

Nikhil Mathews - in case of rapes, even if you assume 95% is unreported, it is still less than the west. Here are some numbers: India: 1.8 per 100K US, Australia: 28 per 100K Assuming india has 95% undergreporting and the actual rates are 20x higher (which is a very high estimate, actual may be less than 90%, or 1 in 10). And assuming in the west, the under-reporting is just 1 in 3 (which is a conservative estimate) : India: 36 per 100K US, Australia: 84 per 100K Even if you assume in west the reporting is 1 in 1.5 (one rape in 1.5 is reported), or 1 in 2 (instead of 1 in 3), even then it is higher than india with a 1 in 20 under-reporting. No matter how you look at it, rapes in india are not very high. And in india, ~90-95% of the rapes are by people known to the victims. So it's not even the 'streets of india' which are dangerous and filled with rapist indian men. And finally, we even have a higher conviction rate for rapes - India: ~24% US, Australia: ~6% Last point, we have a diaspora population of over 20M in various countries - how come we never hear of many such incidents from indians living abroad? We do have low crime rates. You are right, a large % (could very well be 50% or even more) are in fact false cases.

Warren Farrell is an old-school feminist from the days when they sought gender equity. He's been ostracized from the mainstream feminist community since he started insisting on looking at BOTH sides of gender issues. For the last 30+ years, he's focused on men's issues in gender inequity, not because only men have issues but because the female perspective gets almost all of the public media coverage. But last I heard, he still identifies as a feminist in that he wants to see gender equity for both genders--the original goal of the first wave of feminists. To paraphrase him in a nutshell: The current (mainstream) feminists are "Juvenile Feminists", i.e., they want all the rights and privileges of adults but not the obligations, responsibilities, and accountability that go with it.

Let me break down this "opinion poll" from Thomson Reuters - it has 550 or so voters for every country regardless of their population size, THAT means their weighting is off by exponential amounts. Countries with billions and millions of people both have the same number of voters. Also, these voters are "selected" (You don't do that in surveys as you can easily customize any result you want that way. You just choose wide groups like people under 35 or college students and so on). In many cases, most of the voters were not citizens and were NOT LIVING in the country they voted for. For eg: Only 48 or so of all voters were Indian in the 550 who voted on India - does that even make sense? How can you vote about a country you don't live in and don't know anything about? Also, they OMITTED China, Iran and other countries amounting to 25% of the world's population - how does that work? Iran has active protests by women going on RIGHT NOW. This is just a propaganda piece to hit at nations Canada has an issue with : India snubbed Trudeau just 4 weeks earlier, the US slapped tariffs on Canadian goods and so on. This also comes in line with the massive muslim oil funded propaganda against India in the UNHRC. So fuck Reuters - they just lost all respect and most of all : trust from Indians especially those under 35. We keep quiet but that doesn't mean we don't understand or forgive and forget.

The reasons are as follows 1) in almost every metric for rapes India tops the list . According to ncrb data for 2020A total of 371,503 cases of crime against women were reported across the country in 2020, compared to 405,326 in 2019, and 378,236 in 2018. 88 cases daily . 3 rd most crimes against women is rapes m hatras ,unnao, etc etc the list goes on . the unit-level data of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) conducted in 2015-16, and released earlier this year, allows us to calculate the trends in under-reporting of crimes by comparing data on actual experiences of crime victims with that of crimes recorded by the police, and compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau.. 2) social evils like child marriage , Female foeticide , boy child bias still exist in india outside cities and many incidents in cities too happen which cannot be ignored . Estimates suggest that each year, at least 1.5 million girls under 18 get married in India, which makes it home to the largest number of child brides in the world - accounting for a third of the global total. Nearly 16 per cent adolescent girls aged 15-19 are currently married. While the prevalence of girls getting married before age 18 has declined from 47 per cent to 27 per cent between 2005-2006 and 2015-2016 it is still too high. 3) wtf has Canada have to do with Reuters 😂😂? Really Reuters is an international news organisation owned by Thomson Reuters. It employs around 2,500 journalists and 600 photojournalists in about 200 locations worldwide. Reuters is one of the largest news agencies in the world. The agency was established in London in 1851 by the German-born Paul Reute . Canadas involvement is commical . 4)As a indian stop Fking blaming muslims and Islamic nations like a dog . Only pakistan does that kind of shit you talking about leaders of the muslim world like uae and Saudi Arabia support india in almost every Matter even though they are hard-core muslim countries .

As an African I will tell you almost every one lacks physical safety. This is how it works here, all the things you westerners consider basic (including but not limited to a home with a proper roof, education, healthcare, physical safety, a car, clean water, an internet connection, electricity, healthy food) are luxuries only the upper middle class to the wealthy can afford in sufficient quantities. The lower middle class, the blue collar workers and the self employed can only afford a few of these basic needs in insufficient qualities. The point of this comment is to point out that such problems are not unique to women while at the same time appreciating the points you make Dr. Sommers.

Thank you so much for keeping us informed! I actively support the education of 3 teenage girls in a country in central Africa and the dangers they face are staggering sometimes horrifying. It's why I chose to pay it forward there and to invest in the future of these young girls. It is confusing and appalling to realize how much the safety of the women and girls in certain countries is disregarded by intellectual elites. It really seems they are viewed as disposable. Why? The country these 3 girls live in happens to be a failed state where large corporations like Apple and Samsung mine minerals for the production of electronics. Last year someone close to me suggested that these companies have a vested interest in keeping this area destabilized. I scoffed at his paranoia. Today, I am reconsidering the possibility.

The girls in Africa need this kind of help a lot more than most American girls do as they have no options, whatsoever to better their lives. I don't think that it does help Apple or Samsung to operate in the destabilised and volatile countries, though. They depend on reliable sources of raw materials to fulfil contractual obligations, meet deadlines and satisfy investor expectations. One successful attack on a crucial source could undermine business for months, even years. It could be disastrous for profit. As an example, in 2000 the US wasn't even in the top 10 in oil production in the world. After 9/11, Bush felt that they had better stop relying on Middle Eastern Oil and develop their own oil reserves because the Middle East was too unstable. Since then, they've much more than doubled their output and are now the largest oil producer in the world. Stable access to raw materials and supplies are vital to a successful business. However, businesses don't always care about the welfare of the people in the countries they do business in. They just want the raw materials and if a corrupt government benefits from their business, so what. They'd prefer a stable and honest government, I'm sure. That would make great PR but they'll work around it.

Presumably if they had a stable government acting in the interests of its people there would be rules about the extraction of minerals and a tax take for the country.

Fainites Barley Stable governments provide security for the people which can provide education and opportunity for those who want it. Education gives the people the skills to start their own enterprises to provide goods and services from local sources to those locals that work in the mining industry. If these new businesses are successful they expand and provide more work for others. It becomes a slow but inexorable movement towards a better life for everyone. That's how the United States started on it's road to economic success and all the other countries we think of as being rich. It wasn't over night riches and affluence. It was due to a stable government that extended a free market and economy to its citizens that allowed the best and most productive to succeed. The problems of the third world isn't due to outside exploitation. It's due to government corruption, the desire for power and personal gain. As long as the people back autocratic leaders, they will remain poor third world countries.
