H&R is one of the best barrel makers in the U.S. ever. They made barrels in ww2 for every thing from carbine to M2 50s. I have a M1917 with a H&R barrel in it.

Years ago I bought a H&R muzzle loader in .58 caliber. With the action open, the cleaning rod could be used to knock the breach plug out (which is held in by "O" rings and the action frame) so it could be cleaned from the back. GOOD IDEA! Then I bought a Handi Rifle and a .22 RF LR. The Handi Rifle was in .223 and had a bull barrel. I sent it back to H&R to be fitted with accessory barrels that included a .308 bull barrel and standard barrels for .22 Hornet, .30/30 and .44 Magnum. Unlike other manufacturers, H&R did not simply sell accessory barrels, they required that the action be returned to the factory so that the new barrels could be properly fitted. I noticed that the paperwork for the barrel installations was from Remington, so it may be that Remington took over H&R. Now that Ruger owns Remington, maybe some good break action rifles may again be available. My biggest problem with the H&R is that I am having trouble finding a good wooden stock with a high comb for scope use.

Lynn Kramer 1 second ago The buffalo Classic is one of the most enjoyable rifle to shoot of any that I have ever owned. I bought the 38-55 barrel to go with it, but now I can never find commercial ammo for that caliber. The 45-70 has a trajectory like a rainbow, but it is a tack driver at 500 yds. A very pleasant afternoon every time.

The Handi Rifle has only one weakness - wildly variable triggers. Of the two Ultra versions I've owned, the centerfire 308 Winchester had a decent four pound pull, while the 22 WMR has a long, creepy six pound let off.

With the bad management of Remington from owning H&R now days who knows. I am actually surprised that Remington actually fixed Marlin after they screwed them up. H&R and Marlin never should off sold out to Remington. But do admit Remington has older nice pump rifles and shotguns, is all they have that is nice. But their pumps from the 1990's on up, seems like they are junk.

The first longarm I ever shot was an H&R 12GA. After that, a buddy gifted me a practically new NEF (New England Firearms) which is basically the same gun in 12GA also. I've taken several squirrels with mine and this season, actually took my first turkey (a 21.5 pounder with a 10" beard and 1.5" spurs) at 30 yards with it using 5 shot turkey load. I'm going to try to take at least one deer with it this upcoming season. It's my heirloom piece. I'm keepin' it forever along with my Remington 783 in .270, my H&R 12GA Pump and my Marlin 336SS in .30-30 stainless steel.

Years ago back in the 90s I bought a H&R 30-06 bolt action cheap at a gun show . It was the most accurate rifle I ever owned. I think it was control feed. I'm not 100% sure because I wasn't real up on it back then but I know it worked very well. I never had a single issue with that rifle and I used to shoot 3-inch groups at 300 yards with it. With a cheap tasco 4x. Sadly I gave it to a buddy when I left Alaska. He was very happy to have it because it shot better than anything he owned. I've always regretted giving up that rifle. Those single-shot you have their look like great rifles and I bet they're very accurate also . Thanks Mike.

Always wondered about the Handy Rifle versus the Topper series. I always thought the Topper's were mostly single shotgun, but seen many "Topper" that look like Handy's and in rifle cartridges. Perhaps they are used interchangeably, though older Topper's have the shotgun style side-to-side lever to open the action.

Had one chambered in 444 Marlin and I've got a few 12 and 20ga versions. They are ok firearms for those who don't want to spend a lot and that's a good thing. Or was a good thing now that they are no more. There is however a flaw in these I have experianced several times grouse hunting. When it gets freezing the gap between action and barrel can get snow and moisture walking thru woods and it freezes shut. Had it happen several times and walked back to my ATV and got the hot exhaust to unfreeze it. My H&R Tamer 20ga is my favorite grouse gun but it tends to freeze up on me while my Ruger GSR rifle in the same conditions and same day remains totally reliable and amazing, as with my old surplus Mausers. I don't dislike the H&R singles, but at least in my limited experiance they just aren't on the same level as some of my other firearms in reliability. Perhaps I just expect too much, but I've had pump action forends swell, single shots freeze, and single shot firing pins break, and Remington rifles break extractors, but with the old Mausers and my Ruger rifles and the US 1917 they just work for me.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns , Long story short, but during the time when I got my 1st deer rifle, I had to make the choice between the 444 Marlin and the 35 Rem. So back then I picked the 35 Rem. Then about 10 or 15 years ago a friend was going to sell me his 444 Marlin, and I kick myself in the butt from not buying it, with some other guns I should of bought during my life.. Then when I decided to buy it from him, he all ready sold it. Then months or a year before Remington took over H&R, I seen this single shot H&R at Dunham's in the 444 Marlin so I decided to jump on it, with ordering the extra barrels before Remington discontinue it, like they did. Just speaking for myself I like the 444 Marlin much better then the 45-70 and this new 450 Bushmaster. Reason on why I use the 450 BM is cause I am in a state on were I am hunting in a area with caliber restrictions in that area of my state and the 450 BM it is one of the best caliber I can legally use in my deer hunting are, not unless I decide to hunt like about an hour drive away from my hunting spot, then I can use any caliber I want. I find in some ways the 450 BM is better then using a 308 Win or 30-06 etc....USOG, I do not understand on why more people do not use a great caliber like the 444 Marlin more often ? And USOG if your not familiar with this newer 450 BM or this newer 350 Winchester Legend can you make a video of that to ?
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 5 жыл бұрын
@@airbornesoldieramerica7125 Hello Airborne - for sure I can make a video - thanks for suggesting. I like the Bushmaster a lot and have the Ruger American in that cal. I don't have the new .350 Win. though. I think the main reason the bigger bullets are less popular is recoil. Even the .35 Remington can be snappy in a carbine. As more people find the benefits of heavier bullets and that a 300 yard cartridge is not needed in a 150 yard forest - they switch to heavier bullets that can ruin less meat and tend to be quite effective. Hope this makes sense and thanks again for writing.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns , Not sure on what state your from or hunt in is why I mentioned the 450 BM. So I did not know or known you had a 450 BM. Thing I did not like on the American Ruger 450 BM no iron sights. So I sold it to one of my family member that I hunt with. Now I just replaced that Ruger American in the 450 BM, with the Ruger Scout in the 450 BM, cause the Ruger Scout has the iron sights. I had to watch this video again. I got sidetracked with the H&R bolt action I owned before. I really like the handi-rifle. So simple . What I really like about these are the stock design would allow you to mount a vernier tang sight. With out breaking the bank you could have a highly accurate long range shooter. Not sure the quality of these barrels but even if you had to upgrade to a match-grade barrel like a Krieger it would still be relatively cheap. I think I like this one better than the Thompson center because of the straight stock allowing for a tang sight. Thank you Mike great video.

Another great video my friend! Always wanted a h&r handi in 357! Very hard to find for a reasonable price (now that they have been discontinued) so I've been looking for a Thompson contender/g2 in 357. Great rifles! Once seen one in a gun shop that was maybe called a slugger or something. Was 12 gauge and had a 20" rifled barrel for slugs only. Came with a little 3-9x cheap scope. I regret to this day for not buying it as that gun store burned down a few months later! (Apprently most of the guns and ammo survived but had to be destroyed by the RCMP)

Thanks B! I like the Contender and the Encore as well. The Handi would be really great in .357 but, as you note, hard to find and they've gone up so much. The Slugger was a "must buy" that I somehow....failed to buy haha

If you cut a shoting lane the deer will avoid it. 45/70 cuts it's own shooting lane, with my handloads. I have a Steyr model M in 30:06 full stock left handed. and a Remy 700LH BDL in .270, both havent seen the woods since I got the H&R. You have a wonderful collection!

They were terrific rifles. There's nothing more fun (well, in my opinion) than a buffalo classic shooting black powder loads. And at one tenth the cost of a shiloh. Shiney Zamak receiver covers from that other manufacturer don't do it for me either. Zamak is what they used to mold the 'hot wheels' cars of our youth. But to each their own.

I agree - the Buffalo in black or smokeless is near the top for fun, character and "shootability" - simply great rifles. I know what you mean about those covers. I'll take the H&R every time.

Being that breech loaders are a solid, best actions for accuracy makes these H&R superb accurate shooters. Likened to the breech loading Sharps which having a solid block like these H&R's, made the Sharps the accurate long range shoot it became. Same with these H&R. Great gun for the enthusiast to be as accurate as the high end shooters with reloading ....a tack driver...just ask many a ground hog...22-250 just reach out there...

The H&R Buffalo rifle has some nice lines and is a great way to get someone into the single shot world of rifles. With respect to its handling it should be noted that buffalo rifles, both historically and today, are generally shot from sticks. Anyways, I hope you and/or your assistants figure out the KZbin monetization equation. So far what I am convinced of is that understanding Quantum Mechanics is easy in comparison.

Love the HR's. Have a couple, 1 rifle, 1 shotgun. Also, I've become quite curious about KZbin demonetizing videos. Of course you saw the info I linked you from Taofledermaus. Virtually all of his videos are demonetized. I did, however, recently notice that Hickok45's Henry-Martini video and Military Arms channel's video where he shoots 5000 rounds through his AR is monetized. I don't know if you can glean anything from those videos, but somehow they were acceptable in the eyes of KZbin.
