Back in the 70's , Rifle Magazine had an article about a guy who stuck a live reload round in his Ruger #1 out at his local gun range. He could not extract it. He carefully took it home and put a cleaning rod down the barrel with the plan of knocking it out. For some reason, he had it standing straight up on his work bench and it must have been cocked. Some how, it fell off his work bench and the butt stock hit the floor and it fired. It shot the round and the cleaning rod out of the barrel. He thought the gun was ruined. He sent the rifle back to Ruger and they inspected it. The change in the head space was not enough to even worry about. I can attest that it is a single shot rifle that is the gold standard. I will say one more thing, however. Don't ever try to take the entire action apart unless you know what you are doing and have the right tools. Trying to re install the "mousetrap" spring will defeat you and leave you humble.

In the 80"s I came really close to picking up a No 1 International in 7X57. I was still trying to decide when I saw a Sako in 7mm-08 and that was it. It fit me too well. Perfect with a 2-7 Leupold in low rings. I don't regret the Sako but this video reminded me how close I came to not getting it. Wasn't and still isn't a good enough hunter to be using a single shot.

The good old Standard with the 26 inch barrel is a fullsome beauty. The advantage of a 26-inch barrel is that it gives you the velocity that manufacturers of ammunition put on their boxes (supposedly coming out of a 24 inch barrel, but always exaggerated. This means you can pretty well trust the ballistics shown the box when you use over the counter ammunition. Not a small thing for non-loaders.

Ruger ran an add for the No. 3 in Guns& Ammo magazine for years in the early eighties. I wanted one for years and finally got one in 45/70. I had brewed my own ammo for the Marlin I had. That was a medium load. The No.3 could take a whole level of stiffer loads. Man that carbine butt plate was too brutal for me! I let it go, but now wish I would’ve kept it. It would’ve been tolerable with trapdoor loads!

Shoots 3/4 inch but you cannot shoot it more than 2 times without the barrel cooling off. Otherwise the third shot will rise a couple of inches due to the very thin barrel. Shot many deer with it. I have a couple of custom rifles, and others, but I always come back to the #1.

You left out the number 3 in .22 Hornet. Finding any number 3 is quite difficult. As for the number 1, they are no longer made , they could be had from only one special distributor ( Lew Horton?) But I'm not even sure of that anymore. They were just to costly to make. And the ones you can find new are quite expensive. The used ones in good condition and useful chamberings are pretty damn expensive also. We all should of picked up a few back in the 70's when they were plentiful and reasonably priced. Yup, woulda, coulda shoulda !!!!
@dthunter2506rem3 жыл бұрын
Great videos as always! The Ruger number 1 and 3 has quite the following for sure! Almost cult-like at times! LOL! They certainly do have a distinctive beauty and balance to them! The only thing I don't like about them, is their typical lack of a proper fore-stock hanger to allow a free floating fore-end. This limits their average potential accuracy significantly! I have heard "ALLOT" of owners/users say their Number ones are super accurate, but it depends on the logical standard to what they are comparing to. MOA accuracy is the very industry standard basically, and is what I use to compare accuracy results from. I have owned a few of these rifles, and loved the way they handled and looked! The only aspect of the number 1 that I was utterly disappointed with is that they are just not "NORMALLY" MOA or less capable. They seem to hover around 2-2.5 MOA. One I had was awful at about 3.5-4 MOA at 100! Yuck! This is more than enough accuracy for 90% of hunting, but just not interesting enough to hold my attention. I have put a pile of money and time trying to get my Ruger number 1's to shoot at or under 1 MOA, to no avail. Disappointing to say the least! I have heard so many number 1 owners claim that their rifles shoot MOA or better, but when it came to see them shoot them at the range in person, the claim is unfounded. I personally have NEVER seen one shoot 1 MOA or better yet. Does it happen, of course it does, it is just that I have never personally witnessed it. I still to this day, would love to have one that shot 1 MOA or better, because I love the Ruger number 1 style so much! I have also had 4-5 other single shots (Browning 1885 and B-78's), and every single one of them shot at or less than the standard 1 MOA! 3 of then close to 1/2 MOA! My guess is the quality of the fore-stock hanger system lends itself to a much sounder shooting platform. When I come across them at gun shows, I don't even blink about the potential accuracy potential of the firearm, as long as the bore looks good. That allot of confidence that I don't have in the Ruger design. I love the Browning's, but I do prefer the number 1's balance and weight to carry for hunting. If their was a fix for this that would allow a number one to shoot to the standard MOA level, I would very likely, --NO---, "ABSLOUTELY" would own one again!

The Hagn is gorgeous and I love the simplicity of the action but prices are out of reach for a retired cop. the Ruger is a beautiful elegant rifle. I am glad you pointed out the fact the left side of the block and action are higher. Many point to the No.1 as an ambidextrous action when in reality it is a right handed action. Though easier to adapt too for a South paw than a bolt action the higher left side wall does make it less convenient. really enjoyed the video.

Just so happens they stamped them on the barrel Made the 200th year of our American Liberty ( known now as Liberty models ) mine is a #1V in caliber 22-250 I also had a 10x Eurtel target scope installed on it. Can not tell you just how many Ground Hogs (Woodchucks) have expired in farmers hay fields because of this beautiful firearm. Yep! I still have it however have not shot it in 40 years. It is quite capable of 5 shot 1/2" groups at 100 yards.

Wow! Gotta get that laser back in the field! 40 years is a nice break but now it is time to go shooting : ) You must have had fine gun judgment in '76 - not many sold early on. Anyway, however it works out - thanks for writing and all the best.

Action of these rifles reminds me of the 120 mm tank gun. I have a #3 made in 1976 which Ruger engraved "Made in 100th year of American Liberty".

Hi Jeff - they sure are strong actions - barrels usually fail under extreme pressure before the action. Your #3 is superb - wish they still made them.

Still my favorite hunting rifle and always will be. It does handle perfectly and it is a pleasure to hunt the back country as it is slender and lighter than my bolt guns. I own a 300 WM and a 308 W and I have taken much game with them in the western US states and BC. For me, single shot has improved my hunting as well as my taking of game. I must have the right shot to harvest a bull or buck humanely and swiftly. More challenging and rewarding for me.

Oh. What a lovely bunch of rifles. I'm proud to say that I own one, in a petite caliber .416. RIGBY. IT'S A HANDFUL AND KICKS LIKE A MULE. It's also very very accurate!. Bay one!!!!!!!!.
@bgcal50cal Жыл бұрын
I also have a No. 1 in 416 Rigby. With. 400 gr. Heads it was a really hard kicker. I am a gunsmith so I cut the stock to keep the same length of pull and installed a Pachmayr Triple Magnum pad. More fun to shoot now. I also have 1 in 458 Win Mag. Did same to it also. Getting to old to get beat up! Enjoy yours!

Had a M77 MkII in .220 Swift, 26" target-gray finish bull barrel, laminate stock, beavertail forend. Was exceptional, but quite heavy. Eventually I lost my use for it, sold off. The Swift is still the world's highest velocity factory cartridge. Had some 40gr handloads that turned a milk-jug full of water into plastic shreds and a cloud of mist. Those same loads also proved to be quite problematic for prairie dogs. hahaha

You definitely appreciate fine guns. A Ruger # 1 certainly is that. I enjoy and appreciate your opinion and comments. About 39 years ago I shot a Black Bear with a Ruger # 1 in 7mm Rem. Mag. belonging to a friend and neighbour. I spotted the bear across a stubble field and had no gun. This was near to where that friend lived on a farm. I went there but he wasn't home. His wife was good enough to lend the rifle and some ammo. We went back to where we spotted the bear and it was still there. The closest we were able to get using trees for cover was about 300 yards. I levelled the strange gun across the hood of our pickup and found him in the scope. I knew this gun would be zeroed in to be deadly accurate at even this range just by knowing how particular this friend was with all his firearms. He was always hunting or target shooting. I sent one round and the bear went down but got up again and ran for the valley a few yards away. He managed to make his way over the edge and went or rolled almost to the bottom not yet dead. Laying down and howling. I quickly dispatched him. It was a deadly round out of a deadly accurate rifle. I got thinking afterward; jumpin jacks, I'm bear hunting with a single shot rifle!!! Better make that first shot count. And it did. Isn't that what hunting is all about? Make that first shot count? Be it a single shot or a semi auto. Ever sines then I've had a world of respect and admiration for the Ruger # 1.

Fine shot Stuart - single shots make us better hunters. I like your trust in the rifle, in your friend and how he sets up and takes care of his guns and in yourself. And you got a bear! Hope you get a #1

My #3 is a .223. It is a very accurate firearm. In Colorado we are not allowed to big game hunt with anything smaller than a 244 caliber so my #3 is relegated to critters. I have a 6 to 18 power scope so the prarie dogs have to keep a sharp eye open.

In 1983, there was a TV show called the A-Team, which used a more powerful rifle called the Mini-14 chambered in 308 Winchester! Many ranchers, hunters, and farmers owned these weapons and were more formidable than an AR-15! They were made in the USA and were owned by very many people!

My #3 wears #1 wood . It is in 30-40 and shoots cast bullets as well as jacketed into 1.5 inches at 100 yds. most of the time. I have killed around 20 deer with it and it is one of the rifles I would never sell. The #3 was also sold in .22 hornet and I believe 375 winchester. I have a #1 that I built in 38-56. It can be loaded to 35 Wellen power but I use it mostly for cast bullet shooting. The sear notch is on the top of the hammer like a High Standard pistol. This takes pressure off the sear and makes finer trigger pulls possible. I think Bill Ruger's partner Sturm was an engineer for High Standard so the lineage is obvious The Winchester High Wall also has this feature. The Remington Hepburn has the sear engage the hammer near the pivot and it was nearly impossible to get a fine trigger pull on them.The only Ruger #1 that I had a bad experience with was a 243 that never shot well and eventually donated it's wood to the 30-40 #3. It went on to be a 38-55 shutzen rifle that worked out quite well. Last the quarter rib also has 2 dowels. Bill Ruger didn't cut corners on this fine rifle.

I have never owned a rifle like these. I have taken a lot of Coastal Blacktails and Mule Deer with My different Bolt repeater rifles. I have a Savage 99 in 300 Savage that I bring on Out of state hunts as a backup. I have never taken anything with it but I like a unscoped rifle for inclement weather. I started out using open sights and went to scopes that have served well. But shooting the Garand M-1 rifle made Me a convert back to open sights . I will not change My scoped rifles and will still hunt with them but we all go through changes and preferences and anyone who loves shooting sports knows its just plain fun to try new things . Its like being a single Man and being able to try out different women. With a rifle You won’t be committing adultery. I like Traditional Muzzleloaders and military muzzle loaders, primitive archery etc. anything that shoots. These Number ones and threes are like the old Peabody’s and Martini Henry rifles of the Zulu War of 1879. The hunter using a single shot is not necessarily at a disadvantage, and less likely to be prone to getting a bad case of Buck Fever. There may be times when a patient Hunter will find themselves surrounded by a herd of cow and spike Elk who then get spooked and move on by the presence of a coyote. That movement may also cause a excited dash from concealment of a very nice Buck and its cohorts from good concealment. They are not sure of what they are fleeing from. The initial shot and miss followed by a pause will puzzle them and cause a momentary pause in their dash to determine from which direction the threat is coming. A well practiced single shooter who can habitually reload while while maintaining the eye of the Tiger/ Predator / Falcon , Eagle etc. will achieve success.

I always liked the more unpretentious #3. Unfortunately they both fall outside the budget of this pedestrian. I have the H&R model 58 in 44 Mag and the model 258 in 30-30/20 ga in its place. Along the same vein I'd love one of the Martini-Henry Cadets in 357.

Best rifle, most beautiful, reliable like no others.... If I had more gun money I would get at least a couple of them!! I'm in love with my RSI in 30-06 The full stock and short overall length is awesome!! As for a following shot it will never be as fast as a semi auto or a straight pull action, but I can follow a second shot pretty darn quick almost as quick as the average bolt action shooter. I would love one in a bigger caliber as a camp gun, like a 45-70 or 375H&H or anything similar!!

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns I think Ruger can afford to make actions for them on a limited basis, since everything they make is investment cast, vs forged and machined like other manufacturers.

Bill Ruger stated that the Ruger falling block rifle was based upon the Farquharson rifles of the late 1800s, with the styling a tribute to the Gibbs-produced Farquharson rifles. It was considered one of the very strongest actions ever produced and was a favorite of shooters of large game cartridges. In the famous picture of Frederick Selous, his Gibbs-Farquharson is shown as part of his 'kit.' The Ruger #3 is one of those guns that people loved when they owned them and almost immediately wished they hadn't the need to sell. It was light, fast in the hand, easy to carry and shoot. In the smaller calibers it had virtually no recoil, but in my #3 in 45-70 was a real thumper, to the degree that I often wished I had mounted a recoil pad on the rifle, but never did so as I feel it would have compromised some of its near-supernatural handling characteristics. Reportedly, the Ruger #3 was available in the following calibers; .22 Hornet, .223 Remington, 30-40 Krag .375 Winchester, .44 Magnum and .45/70.
