It felt like the Unity demo was missing some bloom and stronger depth of field that was present in the Unreal scene, as such the Unreal scene has some additional sense of realistic interactions with the lighting. I feel the demo should have had some additional effects on the post-processing stack, as Unreal has these effects enabled by default while on Unity you have to enable them manually. This would have made the two a bit closer, that being said, I liked the light coming through the windows on Unity far better than the overly harsh light coming through on Unreal. I agree with others that using volumetric lighting on Unity and no volume on Unreal also made them dissimilar. For a proper comparison of quality they should be trying to be as close to each other as possible, unless you're comparing specific features in which case then you compare the best quality you can get from each.

All the talk about UE richer and better looking, Unity is washed out etc. We'll if UE had had Volumetric lighting on, it too would be washed out in places. Anytime the light comes spilling in it's going through a volume and giving everything a bit of a washed out look. For me Unity kills UE in every way. Volumetric lighting...no flickering (tons on UE) better reflections (at least setup sharper, maybe UE couldn't get there...or Unity needed a bit more blur to get the same look. As for what the artist wanted...I think the real question is which did they start with? because the other was then TWEAKED to look as close to that... Thanks so much for the effor tin making this. Glad to see Unity coming up in the ranks. Both have had great stuff, UE for a longer time...but Unity is what we develop in for Mobile and VR so it's great to see the HDRP coming along so much! Just nice to have tools like both of these accessible to artists these days!

Every time I see one of these side by side comparisons it reminds me of battles between cameras. I work in the photography industry as a retoucher / 3D guy and when I see one of these side by side comparisons it reminds me of the Nikon v Cannon debate. Nikon has all sorts of real friendly great features. It's lenses play nice with each other, and they are less expensive than Cannon. Cannon is a bit less utilitarian, and each camera can be a system onto itself. But there is something magical about Cannon lenses. You can do the same composition, same subject, etc. But cannon glass does something a little better. Not that you can't make great photos in Nikon. You totally can. It reminds me of Unity vs Unreal. There's tons of great reasons to use Unity over unreal. C# is easier than C++, bugs are harder to make and easier to find. C++ is difficult enough that Unreal has a separate coding language (Blueprint) for dorks like me. There's more cool toys to play with in Unity the Unity Asset Store and Unity has post processing effects that make it nearly identical too Unreal... Nearly. Unreal just has better "glass". I don't know how they do it. Maybe they hire Cannon?

I think both are fantastic. Unreal can be incredible for making very detailed and realistic scenes with ease. However what I appreciate about Unity is that with your project, you can start almost completely from scratch. You’re able to turn on or turn off lighting, shadows, reflections and post-processing whenever you like, whereas in Unreal I remember it being realistic intrinsically. With Unity you can directly control how your game looks, be it normal, photo-realistic, stylized or even retro/PS1-ish. I have nothing against Unreal though.

Nice but Glass over canvas does not help to Unreal, as well as the low-resolution reflection. Unreal was using bloom that was missing in Unity as well as some other post-process effects (edges). Tone mapping is not the same. Unity floor shader material needs more specularity or less roughness. Wall UV mapping textures UV distribution was not equal. In Unity looking the frame looks like you are missing bump mapping or displacement. In Unreal sunshaft was missing and is possible to avoid the flickering shadow using a better and similar resolution. Awesome project, we need more of this but was not a fair comparison. Need some work to make them much. FPS was missing.

I think it's really unhelpful to post a comparison of renders like this without mentioning which one was closer to what the artist intended. For example, there's a lot more bloom coming from the skylight at 3:00 in unreal, which reflects strongly off of the floor, but was this intended? Which one is more accurate to what was expected? It looks "better" in unreal, unless the goal was to make the lighting look diffused, in which case it looks way worse. The same can be said for the reflectiveness of the paintings, the depth of the shadows, the strength of the reflection off of the poles, etc...
@albarnie1168
@albarnie1168 5 жыл бұрын
I think it's pretty obvious that with those things it really just came down to user error. Its pretty clear that in the unreal version the light intensity is turned up a bit more, the floor has les roughness and the paintings have more smootness. EDIT: actually, the unreal one has a lower dynamic range

With UE it's EASIER to make nice looking environment. With Unity you CAN get great graphics too, but it takes more time and effort to create the Textures and Models (via Blender for example, add some Substance Painter to it, which Costs) However C++, compared to C# that you can use with Unity, is harder to learn and takes you longer to script, because you have to deal with Memory yourself. Therefor C++ is extremely performant. UE5 has a sick system for its meshes and lighting now, but indies barely get that much storage for all that data. I'm sure Unity will catch up with that too, and storage likely gets even cheaper. My Oppinion: Use the suiting Engine for your current skills and the output you want. It really depends. I have both Installed and work with both of them. But I need to learn C++ cause the BP are really not performant. C# would be more performant. But the most performance you get with C++.

Unity have always been where they are. They always have been ahead of competitors when it comes to performances and stabilisation in general. Now that they really achieve it, they can start working more in depth in their graphical integration. You just need to compare the games made with the 2 engines. Unity always had the better physics, the better networking integration, the better sound encryption, the better lighting costs for the better fps. While, on the other hand, UE games have had great graphic but gamers always have had problem with all the other part of the engine. And don't get me started on their optimisation solution, remember when ARK came out and all internet was asking for a refund ?

@@charlesmasclef1309 Yeah, well, no. Unity better network integration? How many systems did they deprecate now? How many more will follow? And they still not have proper networking in place at all. In contrary to Unreal where it is pretty much a first class citizen. Ark had pretty shitty optimisation, true. But have you tried the simple looking (but awesome) game Bro-Force? It slows down to a crawl when stuff is going on, when it really should not. Actually Unity has a long history with performance complaints, more so than Unreal. Also wondering when they finally get their rendering pipelines properly in place. Although capable they are still a hot mess of confusion and stability issues(build-in, URP, HDRP). In reality the poor performance in both examples boils down to the developers incapability of actually optimizing their own game, both engines have the tools for that but you need to understand how to use them. Many Unreal or Unity developers just do not.

It is all about what you can do and props to him for taking the time to use both engines. I think people should use both then decide which they will always fall back to or use both once you are set with how your projects will work and what project works well with what engine because I don't think any of these engines is better than the other and I use unity because it is easier even though I cant code to save my life but hey gotta learn it anyway and that is because I have only used unity so until I use another maybe that would be easier I don't know for sure but open to try other game engines because if you have to get a job at a game studio they might not use the engine of your choice so be open and less fanboying. Well, you clearly sandbagged the Unreal visuals by using clumsy depth-of-field and bad transparency settings.

your Material setup on Unity was a dumb, 2:10 even the rods are not shining. BTW I don't see any difference, The reason people says Unreal is better because of its default bloom effect and High contrast, But anyone can do that in Unity, Comparison is useless.

reflections were actually better in Unity. In Unreal they were too blurry for glass material. (which is a weakness of Unreal really Unity has crisp, physically correct reflections.) But you probably meant the seemingly lower resolution reflection textures which were apparent due to not being blurred in order to hide it like it was in Unreal.

@F.B.I AGENT I know because I have actually worked in similar and larger studios than those you mentioned, and I have worked with all major engines. Indeed many of the known games are made with Unreal, in the same way that many other known games are made with Unity. And other engines. Thing is, the most amazing huge blockbuster games are typically created with proprietary, off the shelf engines.

I use Unity and prefer it. The Unreal "footage" looks more realistic, the lighting has more nuance and realism. Unity will be there soon enough tho.

For the love of god, please remove the "Subscribe" button from the area where you're displaying relevant information. Not a huge problem, but just something that defeats the purpose of having the "Unity" icon in the first place.

Why did he even show the real power of unity? He ignored bloom effects, blur effects etc etc in a variety of poses with unity where in UE they were used. Obviously he does not have much exp with both engines. So the video is quite not good example.
