My thoughts exactly, the animation, although great, could have been better! Don't think LOD's were used much, I don't think? And if there were alot of use for LOD'S, then why not make this in Unreal Engine where LOD's are not really necessary with Nanite.

Never forget, every Unity demo we've seen has a ton of custom tools. For example, in "The Book of the Dead" they had all these custom tools, even some obscure AO tech for trees that didn’t work when I downloaded it. I remember complaining about it on their forums. Unlike Unreal, Unity’s never really “what you see is what you get”. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the short film, but Unity has always been like that, kind of "faking" the real capabilities of the engine. From an investor’s point of view, though, I guess it's good marketing.

@@mhnoni They do give you the files most of the time but they usually are broken and do not work when the everyday user gets their hands on them. @@Sletchman So essentially getting to these graphics levels in your triple A titles is then behind by about 5 to 10 years as the median graphics capabilities of the consumers becomes more high-end. Within 10 years at the most, I presume most people will have video cards as powerful as the 4090 is today, and many will have much better. So we can expect to see visuals as nice as this fairly typically by the mid 2030s. However there's always games that push the graphics sooner, sometimes targeting those top tier 1% of gamers. Like the Crimson Desert one that's coming out. The in-game trailers for it start to approach graphics like this. It's simply going to be a stunning game and I expect to get the full visuals as the trailer depict, you will need either 2 or 3 4090s in SLI mode or the top tier 5000 series when they are out. I'm excited for the realism in games coming in the next 10 years. I will admit I'm lucky to be one of the few to afford the latest top end video cards every couple of years and I know not many can do that.

"Time Ghost, developed with an unmodified Unity 6 engine, was showcased at Unite Barcelona 2024 running on a PC equipped with an Intel Core i9-14900K CPU and Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 GPU." The problem is not the performance of the HW, in five years we'll be laughing at that rig. The problem is to make a game of that quality with respect to budget and man-hours. Skyrim in this graphics, physics, interaction would probably need the work of more than 1000 people for 6+ years for at least 500 mega USD, innit.

im not sure exactly what pint your making, but if i understand you correctly, i believe this was too showcase the general power of unity 6, not necessarily what it can be for game dev. i dont mean to take a stab i might just be fully misunderstanding what your saying

@@MaceoKeefe So Unity has turned into primarily about creating non-interactive movie videos ? Sarcasm. I repeat. Software and HW today is clearly outpacing the ability of dev teams to absorb their capabilities, and they don't have the money to do it at all.

The biggest problem for indies is time and creating assets of this quality level takes a huge amount of time. And also, this will not run on commodity hardware. You need a super computer. I am willing to bet that that is not even a real time render.
@hanzofuma

The issue is not the beautiful graphics itself but how to make the most beautiful graphics with the lowest resources. Also how good your engine can handle high poly objects.

@@balloonb0y677 Tesselation is not the problem, production is. To create high quality realistic assets is highly time consuming even with the best tools. That may not be relevant for much longer if progress keeps going in the various AI fields but for now it still is.

@@bertilorickardspelar yeah but tessellation was always a huge time consumer. Now it’s gone. And with AI making assets now just makes it all the less time consuming. Although there will always be a need for actual human interaction to make specific decisions on how something is made

I don't use Houdini, but Blender is working toward enabling a lot of Houdini-like proc gen tools - they're very impressive and likely could tackle something like this. The role of a game engine has expanded into asset production but I don't think that "you had to import assets made elsewhere" is a dig to be levied here - until Ai makes assets like these Unreal is the only place that indies are getting free access to very high end humans and the other AAA assets - but you still have to close the gap yourself and elevate the rest of your project to that standard. I'm into the lighting and shadows and stuff that I can use even in stylized games - especially on mobile and low end - and for that reason I'm excessively enthused about the potential for a unified render pipeline that would enable me to scale my game beautifully from "I wish you had a better way of experiencing this" all the way up to computers better than mine. The fundamentals are killer - and Unity has the performance and final image quality - especially in motion - that I refuse to go without. I'm thrilled that Unreal has all of its' features and production tools - they're wonderful - but Unity has the ability to make games for everyday common devices - and that's what I''m targeting. I'm looking forward to checking out this demo on my machine and seeing how horrendously it runs :)
