I've toured for 4 years (with a six month break between each one year leg) and I'm amazed how similar our setups and gear is. Surly, Brooks, Ortlieb, platform pedals, Schwalbe... great minds think alike. :) I did start on a LHT but switched to a Troll with upright swept back bars, and with disc brakes. After a bad crash with wet and muddy rim brakes I'd never go back. I'm still on heavy duty 26" wheels. Work great for me and I've never had problems with them in the field... though I have replaced the whole set a couple of times. Pro-tip: cut the top few inches off a mid sized plastic coke bottle and slip it over the top of your water bottles like a protective sleeve. Really cuts down on stomach problems. Good luck.

I have a 2007 Surly Long Haul Trucker that I was gifted by my employer. I have ridden for 37 years, more or less, and have owned about 12 nice bicycles, and a few crappy ones. The LHT is my favorite, by far, and that includes my Titanium Litespeed Gravel. The Litespeed is a thing of beauty, but to be honest, I ride the LHT more. Bulletproof, reliable, stable, versatile, easy to work on, and all-day-comfortable, Surly LHT's are world-class expedition bicycles. The LHT has been discontinued by Surly in favor of the Disc Trucker, which is similar and a good touring bike, but just not quite in the same class.

Great video of your bike after so many KM's. Maybe good to give you frame a good clean and look for any cracks. Using sand paper get rid of all the rust and repaint those parts. I would then spray oil into all the small frame holes( for welding) on the seats stays and chains stays. The same with the forks. This should help it from rusting on the inside. Also remove the seatpost and spray oil down there and grease so the seatpost does not corrode and fuse into the frame.

Normally the cassette and crankset will have a far longer life than the chain. but a worn down chain wears those components much quicker. it would be much better to change your chain more often (like 5000km or half a year), that way the other components would not wear neraly as much and you dont need to replace them every year. you can carry a "chain wear tool" to check how much the chain is worn and if it needs a replacements. cassettes normaly life past at least 2-3 chains and the cranksets much more.
@JerichoLindsey3 жыл бұрын

You shared a lot of useful practical experience with us. 26" wheel size: In my region in Central Europe, the 26 wheel is available, but these days it is increasingly difficult to buy the desired part immediately in the premium segment. I am also a fan of steel frames and 26 wheels. And I tried several schwalbe tires. If you allow me a piece of advice, rust protection is important for steel frames. Outside, the powder-coated paint is durable. The inside of the pipes can be treated (in Europe, Motip hollow wax). Ciao

After living half of my life in Scandinavia I strongly recommend to plan your route through Norway. It's so magical here. Just not forget atleast 36 or even 40T cassette ;) Btw you don't need to change front chainrings, cassette and rear deraileur so often, if you check your chain for wear and change when it's worn out.

Aero bars are great too if you want to switch positions and be even faster. Not sure if that would work with a front bag though

I wish priority bikes could sponser you they have a amazing bike called priority 600x adventure it's a carbon belt drive system with the pinion gear box it's a amazing bike!! I think if you had a carbon belt drive it would get rid of so many maintenance issues because it only needs a oil change every 3 or 5 k miles you literally open the cap drain it and put in oil that's it and belt tune every now and then which you can do from your phone and a hex wrench... That's the only things to keep up on besides of coarse your tires I plan on getting a Gotham edition which is only $599 it's a 3 speed they have other options though as well but the priority 600x is the best touring bicycle it's $3500which is more pricey but well worth it look up Ryan van duzer he has a KZbin and has videos on the bicycle he also does bicycle tours and everything bicycle...

I like my 26" wheels because I'm a very small person. I personally find 27.5" and 29" too uncomfortable. I hope they keep making them! Tires are easier to find but I think I have to look out for rims soon.

26inch wheels are nice because if you think about the physics of it, you can put more weight on the wheel and spokes before they fail as compared to the larger 700c rims. Also a heavily loaded bike should handle better than a bike with larger wheels since it's closer to the ground it has a lower center of gravity.

I hope Suly bikes team up with you and give you a new bike… and take the old bike and recondition it back to its former glory. And allow you to film the process

I don't blame Surly for using 26 inch wheel as they were around for a very long time (90s & early 2000s) and as life goes everything is getting bigger...Cars, roads, planes, food, people, prices, wheels.

damn when you think each mark on bike frame with it's own history ... thank you Jin for another video 👍 I've tried on one of my bike butterfly handlebars but with drop I found more options for body and they are narrower to pass traffic
@universewithme3 жыл бұрын
Do you prefer drop?? Interesting point! Thank you for sharing! :)
@vincentssoul23693 жыл бұрын
yes I prefer vintage drop bars, they only 420mm wide, got 100mm stem up/down adjustment range , when you loading more lifting up when empty on lower position, also when cycling for steering using pedals and leaning your body weight from one to other side your bike , narrow bars is advantage in busy roads but not on gravel or sand

as far as the rust, the majority will be on the inside of the frame mainly on the heat treated joints. could you please elaborate on the cable housings as I think these have more effect on the gear change more than anything else. did you notice that the gear switching was going off after you loaded your bike - it could be due to the steel bending.

Hello Jin. As a bicycle mechanic, I have to say this is my very favorite video you have made. I ride a Surly Long Haul Trucker as well, and love it. I have one suggestion, regarding your changing the entire drivetrain every 10,000 kilometers. If you change your chain at approximately 2500 kilometers, you can usually get about 3 chains before you need to change your cassette. There will be less wear on the chainrings and derailleur as well. Just a suggestion, but it might save some money in the long term. Be well, and stay safe, Stephen
@universewithme3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen, I am so happy that you like this content. By the way, thank you for your suggestion. Do you mean if I change the chain at every 2,500km, then I can change everything like after 20,000 km? Actually in my memory, so far I've had four times big change. So it's actually every 15,000~20,000km though. I was always wondering how often people really change the chain because 2,500 km can mean one chain per month for someone. I've noticed so many people are crazy at cycling on Strava and my distance is nothing compared to many people out there. My question is that do many people change the chain really every 3,000km at every month?
@imawrench3 жыл бұрын
I asked around the shop here and we suggest changing chains at about 1500-2000 miles, which I converted to about 3200 kilometers. Then be observant of the wear on the chain. A new chain will measure 12 inches from pin to pin. If it’s 12 1/6” I will replace chain. If it’s 12 1/8”, I will replace chain and cassette. Usually you can replace a chain 2-3 times before replacing a cassette. I assume you are a “soft” rider due to your size. Probably pretty easy on drivetrains. As long as the chain doesn’t slip over the teeth under load, then all is good.
