As part of UCD's After Empire programme of events, former President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki gave a unique insight into his country's experiences since independence.
The interviews were conducted by Dr Conor Mulvagh (UCD School of History) in University College Dublin's historic Belfield House in February 2016.
Despite taking different paths towards independence, and doing so in different eras and circumstances, Ireland, South Africa, Tanzania and India share much common history which has shaped their place in the modern world. The transition from imperialism towards national governance was an experience common to many emerging states during the 20th Century.

I am a white South African and can say with all honesty that Thabo was a national hero and probably the only honourable president South Africa has seen in nearly 50 years. He did not allow himself to be sold out which was evident when he refused to be bullied into the HIV LIE! He stood against all the evil overlords, many of which we are standing up against in this moment in history. His truth will one day be remembered and he will go down in REAL history amongst the other great men like himself. God bless you Thabo, you are a son of God, a brother to many irrespective of color.

One day when History is written and written properly; many are going to apologize for the manner in which president Mbeki was ousted. I count among others: Julius Malema, Jacob Zuma, D.D. Mabuza, Matthew Phosa, Cyril Ramaphosa, Sphiwe Nyanda and the like.

Great insightful interview. I found Mr Mbeki's explanation of his Zimbabwe diplomacy very good. Wrongly criticized from Britain's Tony Blair. Britain and the USA foreign relations like to dethrone leaders and replace with someone who suits their needs. Mainly money driven. Rather than bringing all the people together in the country to talk about the problems and find a democratic solution from the citizens of that country.

Hence president Robert Mugabe says, " you don't leave power when you are told by an imperialist to leave." He said this in a live interview with Christine Amenpour.

Oh many thanks to you fellow I'm so greatful to hear and see that there are people who can see what this noble man did for his country during his governor, I am very proud of the way in which President Mbeki continue serves our continent with diligence and integrity, the quality he has possessed since he was a youth has matured along with him, since he has a logical port of call as trusted broker in seeking the resolution of some seemingly intractable conflicts on our continent, this faith in his ability is not misplaced his name is among Pantheon of leaders who have built Africa

Watched this again 6 years later. Great way to finish the interview from Mbeki by saying let’s have equitably between all nations so we can eradicate poverty in the world. And from myself… to eradicate greed! If humanity is to grow and mature and survive we have to have equitability for all the people in the world. I found the interviewer a little bit off for the last 15 mins on the questions about HIV and access to water these questions needed more time. And the pre arranged time for the interview was already set. Mbeki graciously moved past this and raised the important topics onto equity and the relationships between the African Union and the EU.
