The 2020 Narrm Oration with Associate Professor Michael-Shawn Fletcher

Absolutely brilliant! Fascinating, eye opening, credible, authoritative are the immediate words that come to mind after watching Michael Shawn's oration. I believe he's right on the money. Having worked for more than two decades in a government agency responsible in part for 'fighting' fire i look back at hazard reduction and see this as a brutal treatment of the landscape, mini bushfires, politically driven and ignorant of the First Nations knowledge practised over millennia. I'm hoping that Michael-Shawn is the vanguard of a far more sophisticated generation of indigenous peoples who can open eyes and show us a better way to manage country today and in the future. Well done Michael-Shawn.

Without a doubt there is a depth and breadth of indigenous knowledge that has long been overlooked, berated and worse. The interconnectedness of EVERYTHING is so basic to indigenous world views. I love the way you have pointed out that man DOES have an important role on the planet. If we live in harmony with all of life, everyone and all life benefits. The western thinking is far removed from ours on many levels. We need to hold tightly to that which our forebears have taught us, and share what is appropriate at the right time with the right people. Fascinating. Thank you Michael. I look forward to your book! We need Aboriginal caretakers for each landscape region of Australia and we need to share this knowledge with non-Aboriginal peoples so that we can all care for and connect to Country.
