But I’d rather put a lot of effort and be disappointed than not care at all. Of course, I’m typing this on results day.. I didn't go to uni aged 18, I didn't feel ready, so I took a "gap year" that lasted 3 years haha. I was an Au Pair and then worked in a ski resort - I couldn't afford a normal gap year experience but the jobs I did didn't cost me a thing! Everything was provided: Accommodation, food, lift pass, ski hire, travel from the UK to resort. Even as an Au Pair the accommodation and food was provided for, it was just the flight I had to pay for. So there are definitely options out there for those that don't think they can afford a gap year. :) I went to uni aged 21 and I am so glad I did that because I'd matured a lot over those 3 years of working abroad and could handle deadlines and uni stress a lot better than those that were younger than I was. :)

@@annamason4638 Have a look at the website 'Workaseason'. That's who I went with. Organisations like BUNAC and Oyster Worldwide also do ski seasons but you have to pay a programme fee, whereas with Workaseason you get everything provided for you (travel to/from the UK, accommodation, meals, season lift pass, ski hire etc). I was a Hotel Assistant which is basically Housekeeping and Restaurant service in a hotel, but there are other roles too like Chalet Host, chefs, resort reps, ski reps etc. If you have any other questions, my Instagram is alpinestudies. :)

I'm Swedish and yes, most people here start uni between ages 21-25! I think uni is structured in a totally different way here as well though, you can easily apply for single courses (one term, half a term, many people do this after high school to get a feel of it) and uni is totally free. In a way, I think this makes Swedish students more lazy to start uni, because there are no consequences of putting it off. Wages here are high so working unqualified jobs makes for a pretty good standard of living as well

I took a gap year two years ago, and it was so worth it. Actually, I wanted to go to uni abroad but I was so stressed out about it, so after choosing the right university and the right country I decided to spend my gap year traveling across it. I met so many new people, learned a language(from B1 to C1 in just one year among native speakers, it was really easy and it was a lot of fun), I found out a lot of new things, got to know other culture and finally I earned some money and saved some for a new academic year , so now I do recommend a gap year to everyone, especially if you doubt what you should do after school. Don’t be afraid of change ❤️ P.S. In my country literally nobody takes a gap year as it is considered as a waste of time, I was the only one from my school who took a gap year, all of my teachers didn’t support me in this and tried to persuade me, but luckily they didn’t succeed

I personally think when you finish college (if you go) gap years should be mandatory. I took a three year gap year and it was the best thing I ever did. I think 18 year olds need to go out and experience the real world and try lots of things before they commit to one thing. I think going to university with more of an open mind than like Jade said being in the school system. You are kind of ignorant because of the education bubble and gap years allow you to grow and find yourself. I am very passionate about gap years.

Did you go uni after the 3 years?

Yes I am going this year and I’ve been working for three years as I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was very much pressured by my college to go and I went along with it as I didn’t have a clue. I didn’t get the grades to get into any uni really (lol) but then I did an apprenticeship and got a full time job doing that then this past year I’ve gone back to college and studied a course which allowed me to go to uni. Now I’m off :)

@@georgiajones8263 so you're in your 20's right? Do you feel like you'll be an odd one out, being older than many there. I want to take a two year gap year but I'm nervous about the age gap in uni when socialising, making friends. I know it's not that big a deal but I worry
@georgiajones82635 жыл бұрын
honey_melanin no you are completely justified in feeling the way you do. I’ll be 21 when I go and 24 when I finish. Honestly I have two friends going with me to uni both who are 25. When I went to an introduction day a lot of people were 20+. I was very anxious like what are the 18 year olds going to say they will think I’m so old and honestly I don’t think they care. I think as a “mature student” which I hate that name because I feel like I am being compared to an age of a cheese you will meet other students your age. I did find seeing all my friends graduating a bit hard because they are finishing now as I’m starting but I keep reminding myself I did what was best for me and I’m so glad I didn’t follow the crowd and do what everything else was doing. Follow your heart because you’ll thank yourself. Screw what anyone else thinks :)

I love how you specify that a gap year can be such a different experience to people. That working for an entire year actually can be very beneficial to some! I personally had no clue of what I wanted to study, so I decided to take a gap year just working. During school I didnt have time to gain any work experience, so I worked a ton that year at a local store, being beneficial for my CV. Not only did it leave me with a good amount of money, it also really helped me work on social anxiety and gave me a confidence I didnt have before. Im now off to do my masters in education (yes, a profession that during my school years seemed absolutely impossible due to my social anxiety.). Taking a year or two to get to know your self better, or figuring out stuff, wont matter in the bigger picture of things

I took a gap year after I got covid during my fourth year exams and hayfever for two months after it. Since I was a part-time student, I was really disappointed as if it weren't for the illness then I'd have did another year and would have finished by now. During my gap year, I met my boyfriend, moved in with him, tried a corporate job for two weeks then quit, got 13 students to teach piano by self-employment, took my mum on holiday to Spain and Germany, discovered that I now do better with guided meditation rather than the ones with music and attended weekly therapy with a private therapist for 10 months to better my mental health. I also managed to get my 8 tracks mixed and mastered after contacting a pianist I'd always looked up to since I was a teenager. He then also did two remixes of my originals for me and I released all 10 into an album on Bandcamp.

I did a gap year after bachelor’s graduation (currently on it) and it honesty hasn’t been as productive as yours but was definitely worth taking because when you graduate you’re scared of starting anything and figure out you’re not happy about it. Gap year makes you more self-aware and allows you to properly study your next steps. It’s really worth it but I also have to say that even when you graduate from university and no matter what path you choose (masters, job, gap year) you’re still going to compare yourself with friends, with those who chose to continue education or work in the industry and you’ll question your choices. It has to eventually end and the gap year makes it easier instead of having a breakdown while you’re on a job or a master’s program.

Okay, so great vid highly informative, love it. But hear me out. Go on Audacity, upload your audio. Select a silent part go to effect then noise reduction, then take reduction profile. Then select your whole audio and go back to noise reduction and hit apply.

I was thinking about doing a gap year to catch up on a lot of things I felt I was missing out on. Being 18, a lot of my friends already have their drivers license or a job. Some are managing other “adult things” that I feel I’ve been unable to do. I don’t even know what I plan to do if I go to college next year and I feel everything’s in such a rush. I’m scared of failing but I also want to see the world much more before entering another 4 years of school. But I also don’t want to feel left behind. All of a sudden life is just something I’m supposed to know how to handle when in reality I’m so lost and confused. My parents think the idea will just make me lazy but I’m not so sure.

I just started uni this year in January, and even though I had wanted to take a gap year instead, I chose to wait a couple years to save up - I realised having started uni that theres a lot of people from so many different ages because they took gap years or something too! Thanks for inspiring me to keep on working towards that gap year even if it's still a year or two away :)))

I’m currently taking a gap year between my bachelors and masters degree, mainly due to my mental health which wasn’t great towards the end of my degree. It can be difficult having such big plans and things you would love to do but not being well enough the achieve it all. I just want to say that even if you spend the year getting better, bettering yourself in any way at all is worth it :) I’m going to spend this year sticking to my meds committing to recovery and preparing to have the best year of even more learning and development when I do my masters. It doesn’t have to be super glamorous to be worthwhile, thanks for sharing Jade ❤️

I took a gap year at the age of 29 after a traumatic break-up. It was enough for me to disappear for 9 months, and get over 15 years of travel anxiety. Best thing ever. It actually was worse on my mental health towards the end, but there were moments that I've wanted to have for over half my life. Totally worth it.

I think at one point during gap year you miss studying! And that was very important for me. And I don't mean the "back to school after summer holidays" kind, you come to a point where you feel like you haven't done anything for your brain for ages and you really want to do something to learn new things. That's just something, that you usually do every time and it is so weird without. And that is a perfect time to start uni. It's a whole new sort of motivation!

I am from Spain and taking a gap year here is very weird. When we finish high school, we're expected to throw ourselves to uni immediately. Even tough I did not take a gap year I think it has many beneficts. In Spain, the last year of high school is really stressfull and it usally drains everybody. When I started uni, I was not over my last year in high school and I did not enjoy my course. In Spain we feel a lot of pressure to know exactly what we want to do with the rest of our lives since age 15/16 but specially 17/18. A gap year would beneficiate a lot of people. Love the video :)

I am thinking about taking a gap year before uni, but my biggest concern is that I'm very introvert, so traveling alone or going to another country for a longer period is pretty scary for me, since I'm not someone who makes a lot of friends within a short time period. Anyone experience with that? :)
@xy17845 жыл бұрын
Same, I'm taking a gap year from september on and while I have a set plan until january, I still don't have that for the other months. I would love to travel, especially to China and Korea (IF I can afford it), but I'm sooo scared since I'm so not the person to go up to strangers especially people from completely different cultures (I'm really afraid of saying or doing something wrong/impolite though I want to learn more about new cultures)

I'm a bit stuck not gonna lie! I love to travel but I have to save up money first! I'm having a really difficult time mentally! mainly cause gap year wasn't planned at all! and watching your videos are quite inspiring and just positive cause I really need positivity in my life right now! so thank you:) also, that editing skills though;)

something you missed out was how it allowed you to really think about what you wanted from education and to change your uni plans! i definitely wish i'd taken a gap year for this reason. i swapped courses 3 years in for mental health reasons and think i would've been so much clearer on my course/uni choice after a gap year and would've saved myself time and financial stress. it's a big regret of mine that i didn't, but i was worried i would be too lonely and wouldn't be proactive enough. pretty sure i'll take one after uni though!

Jade I love you! I decided to take a gap year a few weeks ago after changing my mind about my course. I was originally supposed to be studying Psychology, but I now have a deferred place to study Environmental Sciences in 2020, something I’m so much more passionate about :) currently working 25 hours a week in order to fund my travels this year. Already planned a trip to Vietnam!

Such a nice video! I'm currently also on my gap year. Because I had the privilege of working during school I saved up much more money and 8 months only consist of traveling around the world (just came back from the US now preparing for Asia) and who knows maybe it will go on a bit longer too! I'm not thinking about going to uni but applying for a working holiday visa after I come back from my travels in winter. :) I'm very excited! I wish you guys all the best and also thanks Jade for being such a nice inspiration ❤️
