Nice work Ealan. Enjoyed this video. I agree about the dynamic impact good amplifiers can have. I love my old Rotel class AB amps. I've just upgraded my 3700 to the denon 3800. I am looking forward to you reviewing it. It's got a huge feature set update and the dsp change seems to have moved it up a notch towards a dedicated processor

Ealan, I must agree with you about better amps = better sonic performance. I didn't think an amp could make much difference, but when I did an "experiment" with my desk system. I was more than pleasantly surprised when I switched out my $80 Aiyima A07 class D amp for a vintage NAD 214 class A/B amp. Similar rated power, but the NAD added so much more dynamics and clarity to the audio presentation. Like you experienced, I have much better bass in the room now that the speakers are adding to the subwoofer. I hope you get to enjoy the Aperion amps for a long time.

Hi Ealan, that intro was really funny lol. In other news, I am truly blown away by the Marantz receiver, it handles 5.1 with ease. The time willl come when I install some ceiling speakers for that 7.1 upgrade and at that point it would make sense to look at amplifiers I would think. We all have to start somewhere right?

I do have a question, when calibrating with pink noice and a SPL meter, what do I set the volume to, 0 (reference) or what my normal listening volume? -30

Hey Ealan, I’m just about ready to dive into external amps and grab a BasX A5 from Emotiva. Just wondering how close the A5 comes in performance to the Outlaw or the Aperion amp? My speakers are the arendal 1961 monitors and bookshelf speakers with 4ohm nominal impedance and 84 and 87 db sensitivity.

It pretty much goes up in sequence performance-wise with the amps you mentioned. 1) BasX 2) Outlaw 3) Aperion Energy. But it’s also an increase in money spent, depending on which you get. I’d say at LEAST the Outlaw with those incredible Arendal monitors. 😊🎉

HT-A9 with SW5 is definitely one of the best “soundbars” on the market today, but I still personally prefer a traditional AVR system. More customization options and easier to upgrade piece by piece, whereas the HT-A9 can’t be upgraded. 🤷‍♂️ Just comes down to personal preference, really.

Check the input sensitivity between your amps, i have 2 different brand class A/B amps running on xlr and there is a difference between them due to input sensitivity.

@Ealan Osbourne Can you recommend a sound system (best of the best - no price barred) for using with my Pro Display XDR? I like to watch stuff and listen from my desk. I love my XDR more than by 65inch LG OLED... Can I use nakamichi dragon or Klipsch 9.2 or 1200 or Samsung q990b? If not, then what setup can get me similar sound. I just sit close to my XDR display. That's why it very hard to find. I could have gone with Nakamichi with my Lg oled but I love viewing anything on XDR.

Lemme get back to you on that. It’s a bit trickier when dealing with a monitor (meant just for video purposes) as opposed to a TV. But I am also curious myself what an ultimate system would look like in your case. Which computer do you have connected to your Pro Display XDR?

That’s just common with any amp or AVR, honestly. It’s only when you’re dealing with the really expensive stuff that you’ll get virtually no audible hiss even with your ear right next to the tweeter…but MAN do they cost a lot. 😬

Good day Ealan! I need your advice please... Up to 30 feet, it's not too difficult to choose a necessary wire gauge for speaker cables... it's more the long runs that are questionable. Therefore, I need to install a 75 foot run to my rear Atmos speakers... is 12 gauge OFC sufficient? Some info out there mentions that 10 gauge might remove quality of sound on the highs (mid-range and tweeter)... is this true to your knowledge? My Atmos installation as rear heights will be Canton AR-500's (4 - 8ohms) powered by Onkyo RZ-50, and set the AMP impedance switched on to 6 to 8 Ohms (not 4 to 6 Ohms). Please help me choose the right gauge (AWG) before I purchase the speaker wire since I will need a CL2 rated wire for in-wall installation. Thank you in advance! Perry

Hi Perry! It’s been awhile, my good friend! 😁 Truth be told, I’m not an expert on electrical engineering, but I did find a very helpful article (linked below). But I do agree with your original assessment, that you should probably run with 12 AWG. Technically you could get away with 14 AWG, but that’s pushing it, so I’d stick with 12 AWG to be safe. Although it isn’t recommended to have speaker wire runs longer than 50 ft as a general rule, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. So yeah, I’d suggest 12 AWG for a 75’ run. The only other thing I might add is that maybe at some point - if and when you are running your system with a preamp that has XLR outputs - that would be a solid system even with incredibly long cable runs. XLR cables can span distances up to 200 feet with no signal degradation. But then you would need powered height monitors (speakers) that have XLR inputs (like any post production facility would have). But then you’re dealing with some seriously expensive equipment, so I get that might not be feasible for quite some time. Just some food for thought if dealing with 75 foot runs will continue to be part of your system. 😁🤘

Currently I have Aperion Audio Theatrus speakers for my LCR and surrounds and my theater has never sounded better. Not cheap, though. But Aperion has the Novus and Verus speakers too, which are great as well. I would compare them to SVS as far as awesome products AND excellent customer service. 🤘

150 watts for all channels driven vs 200 watts LCR and then 100 watts for all other speakers. What is the difference? Is the sound equal when turning up the volume? Looking at Monolith vs Aperion for power amps.

Yeah, those Monolith amps (and Emotiva XPA amps, for that matter) do that so the consumer can save money if they don’t need ALL that power for all speakers. They’ll reserve the high-capacity amps for your LCR (if you have some power hungry speakers up front) and lower capacity amps for the rest, if you have smaller, less power hungry surrounds. Although the Monolith 7x specs are even better than the Energy E7 on paper, but I have yet to hear it for myself in person. 🤷‍♂️

If you have speakers that are rated to handle up to 170 wpc into 8 ohms, or 272 watts into 4 ohms, then the E2 will perform so well for music reproduction 🎵🎶🎼

the watts seem low on there amps. I would think the 2 channel and 3 channel would be higher watts. Are your speakers not super power hungry? My towers can handle 300 watts center channel 260 watts. Surrounds and rear 125 watts and atmos 100 watts. So I am wondering the best way to power them all. Just seems like there is no one solution.

It’s not just about the watts. The toroidal transformer and high current capacitors also make a big difference. But I get it - you may want to go with an even more powerful amp for your 300 watt speakers, and some energy amps for the rest. Especially if you listen to stereo music a lot with your towers. 👍

These are priced well. These could be made by ATI. The dual toridial transformers and 7 x independent channel modules is a great design. Yes what you are hearing is not just high speed power delivery but also a great low THD rating will always make the system sound better. The next step is a reference balanced differential amplifier for the front 3 x channels from ATI or Emotiva. And no a class D design will never sound this good.

@@ealanosborne Hey Ealan - I'm gonna take a shot in the dark here - maybe you can help. I want to put my front soundstage (3 channels) on an external amp, but I have an Denon (x4300h) and my settings only allow me to set my L and R to pre-out. Am I screwed?

@@Adalric30 Nope! It’s just how the software was written. You can only ASSIGN your Front L/R for pre outs, but the center channel pre out is still actively awaiting an RCA connection, if you so choose. The same goes for the rest of the pre outs, honestly. So go for it! 😁🎉

@@Adalric30 No, it shouldn’t. Once you plug in an RCA cable into a pre-out, it’s essentially disrupting the audio signal path to then carry the signal elsewhere BEFORE it reaches the internal amp, hence the PRE in pre-out. 🤘

Do you still use the Aperion amp in your system? Or have you graduated to Trinnov like it seems all the other KZbinrs gravitate to when they become big-time content creators? Just kidding. No, seriously, are you still rocking that Aperion amp? How do you feel aboutit now? I am contemplating getting the 5-channel version, OR maybe the Monoprice 5-channel version _(not the bottom-tier 5-channel amp they just came out with recently)_ of their amp that has been out for a while. Do you think the Verus towers will benefit from either amp? The Monoprice is cheaper and has slightly more power.
