*Defeats a multi-tournament champion AOE player* "Yeah thats a solid one" What an absolute unit, amazing gameplay Turin, the way you calmly handled the unending multi-pronged harass was beautiful. Most players would've easily buckled under it.

Great stuff. Btw streltsi looks like made for being OP in the computer games - "Yeah, they like musketeers, but with greataxes so big what they can decapitate horse or split man in half in single strike, enjoy your balance". Also you game was a sort of historical depiction of 15-16 century - Russia adopt eastern cavalry, raid nomads back, then reform infantry and artillery and land a final blow to khanates, lol.

16:00 "Rus horse archers vs. Mongol horse archers: I don't think it historically goes well for the Rus." This reflects the later development in Rus-Nomad relations: Muscovy has been absorbing lots and lots of nomadic military specialists, and hence the nomadic tactics; in particular there were "boyar sons", afaik a translation of the Tatar "oglyn". As a result, every, like, second old noble family in Russian Empire had either Mongol, Tatar or Arabic (via Islamized Tatars) name: Sheremetyev, Chaadayev, Ahmatov, Karamzin (kara-murza) you name it. As you know, to this end, it went quite well for the Muscovy - by XV century its cavalry became effective just enough to keep pace with the nomads, and to crush Novgorod infantry, which were more Europe-oriented. 19:40 "I could use some conversion on Mongols, that would be pretty nice" Me, a descendant converted Mongols: "Yeah, pretty darn so..." 24:00 Traction Trebuchet: This is Chinese tech; instead of the counterweight, it is pulled by humans. You know, dozens of humans.

AoE4 is everything I had hoped it would be; basically just an upgraded Age of Empire 2, in 3D and is a bit more historically authentic for the factions. Also nailed the period look for Rus. I like the fact that "unique" buildings are aesthetically matching the time period of their constructions rather than looking out of place like in past titles.

Traction trebuchets are in contrast to Counterweight trebuchets operated by human strength. A counterweight trebuchet (like the Bretonians in Warhammer have) uses a counterweight and the lever to propell the stone. On traction trebuchets are basically some dudes pulling the lever with ropes where otherwise the weight would be. Its basically a lighter variant. Hope my "english" is understandable. Love your content by the way and am enjoying the AoE content very much. Game gets right into nostalgia but with really cool additions and diversity!

In response to your comment of Rus horse archers vs Mongol horse archers, no, it did not go well for the Rus. The Mongols basically wiped out the Rus states during middle ages, with a few exceptions; chief among them being Novgorod, which survived because it decided to actually submit to the Mongols rather than foolishly fighting them. The Mongols were pretty OP in history. Probably should have been nerfed.

Historically Russians learned horse stuff from nomads we were dealing with for centuries, peacefully and not so much, so up until Peter's army reformation our cavalry was more towards "horse archer" than "knight".
@lexchinchas3001
@lexchinchas3001 3 жыл бұрын
Completly false information. Up to the rise of Ivan IV the main type of horse warriors were Heavy Eastern Roman styled Cavalary. So, "Knights". Of course we didn't call them Knights, they were always part of "Druzhina". But overall "Druzhina" were quite similar to Knights in many ways, expect for having own land, because of highly dungerous farming in almost all of Rus Principalities, exepct the ones to the south west, Galicia-Volhynia or Kiev. But even still. Russian tradition for Cavalary was mostly similiar to all other European Kingdoms at the time. The Nomad styled cavalary come into main use much later, and the main bulk of it were Cossacks, who themselves were much more Nomadic in culture.

Actually Rus start to push back in 15 century, 100 years prior streltsi. Its took around 20-30 years to switch from knight type of cavalry to nomad type, extremely fast at this age and situation. So yeah, 15-17 century russian cavalry was mostly easter style one. And its make sence - to counter nomad raids you need fast cavalry which can catch raiders. Russian nobles become actually very good at this - soon they start to raid nomads back, lol. And later addition of advanced infantry and artillery (both was very modern at this time) made final blow and raids transform into conquest.

Assuming Russia includes cossacks, they have strong historical basis for good light cavalry (not so much heavy). Their cossack cavalry were quite good, if a bit rough around the edges, a few centuries after the mongols' heyday. (Cossacks were equal parts rebels and highway robbers, at various times, and their progenitors probably included the Scythians, of TW: Rome cavalry fame.). At the time depicted, Russia was really lagging behind. The Tsars and upper nobility was doing well, and the Empire, as such, but the peasants were dirt poor, and industrialization was barely happening. I don't think the boiling point - 1905 - gets reached in this game though, but the hints of it should be seen. If you count Russia as a Europen power, they were one of the least advanced. Compared to most of Asia they were a superpower though.

Cool game, makes one want to dive into AOE4. Its kinda odd that rus mounted archers can trade with mongolian ones. I mean, you probably cant make mongolian cavalry anywhere near as strong as they were historicly, for balance purposes. But they surely arent supposed to be outtraded by any other mounted missiles.

Tbf the other civs horse archers are tier 3 units compared to mongols tier 2, meaning they exist in-game 100-300 years later than the mongol ones.

After gaining their independence and expanding their own empire, The Russians incorporated a lot of the steppe peoples who were part of the Mongol horde into their own armies, giving them high quality horse archers of their own(see the Tatars for example). Russia getting cavalry archers as good as the Mongols but an age later is actually pretty accurate

Seems to me that walls are severlty underused in competitive play in general, and for the RUS in particular, wooden forts on the outlier

@@turinRTS very nice. Would you consider kicking off with a "Noob League" style tournament? Something like 10 players sign up and play each other player once or twice, then top 4 play a knockout semi and final. You can make it extra spicy where players play twice but each player gets to choose BOTH civilisations for a game once. This will force players to play a faction they may not usually try.
