Ever wondered how long you could survive, clad only in your swimsuit, in the middle of a snowstorm?
Forget everything you know about hypothermia and shielding yourself from the icy winds of a harsh Canadian winter. What if I told you, I'm not just braving the cold-there's something extraordinary happening. Today, we delve into the world of Tummo breathing
Tummo breathing, which translates to 'inner fire' in Tibetan, is an ancient form of meditation that involves a mix of breathing and visualization. This meditation is associated with the cultivation of inner heat and has traditionally been practiced by Tibetan monks to increase body temperature in extremely cold environments. Studies have shown that Buddhist monks, using this technique, can increase their body temperature by 8.3 degrees Celsius or 47 degrees Fahrenheit, for you Americans.
But how exactly do these monks achieve such a remarkable feat? What secrets lie behind the ancient practice of Tummo breathing?
Practitioners initiate Tummo by visualizing a small flame at the base of the spine, stimulating energy flow. This meditation incorporates specific breathing techniques, including rhythmic and forceful patterns, coordinated with visualization to amplify inner heat. Essential to Tummo are concentration and mindfulness, with practitioners focusing on the generated inner heat. Often combined with specific yogic postures, such as sitting or lying down, Tummo is practiced in a relaxed yet alert state.
Of course, this is an overly simplified description of what tummo is. It takes years to master, and I am just starting out on my own. I don’t have a guide. I don’t have a teacher. Learning on my own means I might be doing this all wrong for all I know, so maybe I should not even say that I am doing tummo. My point is, tummo is deeply intertwined with Tibetan Buddhist philosophy and practices, and I want to respect the cultural and spiritual aspects of the practice. This self-experimentation is part of my journey to acclimate to the cold.
So why exactly am I doing this, you might wonder.
As I experiment with cold acclimation, I aim to push the limits of my body and uncover its untapped potential. Why this pursuit? Because I view the body as a machine-remarkable, resilient, yet often underestimated. The fascinating part? So is your. You might just not be aware of its full capabilities yet.
