Professional microphones on the iPhone are great… until you want to listen to what you just recorded and you have to unplug the whole setup. Now with the cable, I show in this video, you won't have to do that any longer!

Fantastic video, as this is the closest I got to get things right. I currently have an iPhone and I am using the Boya lavalier mic (TRRS) with a lightning Belkin that splits into 3.5mm and power. But I want to include my headphone to be able to do live interview other people in Instagram using separate mic and headphones. So according to you I will have to buy a splitter, which will be TRRS to two TRS (mic and head). And I will still need to add another adaptor to convert my Boya TRRS to TRS. My question is… you mentioned that a few microphones automatically detects if it’s a TRRS or TRS receptor, so you connect your TRRS mic directly into the TRS splitter and it works. Does the Boya lavalier mic detects it automatically, or I’ll still need to buy the TRRS to TRS adapter? Thank you very much!

Thank you for your comment. Now with things like Facebook Live and similar services, these can be a bit finicky to get working with external microphones. I have a video where I talk about some of these aspects: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYiyZ5yCq86ieac Generally, however, I only have found that trial and error can really help 🙈 - and sometimes even unplugging and plugging back in.

Great video, two questions: Is there a dongle/adapter to do the same but with USB microphones? And, to monitor the audio in real time while recording, can you simply listen to yourself directly from the moment you connect the headphones or do you have to enter an app or activate something specific? Thank you so much!

Not sure about usb-c since I don’t have one of the new USB-C iPhones. But I’d assume that these exist. Some of the Wireless systems or the Rode VideoMic Go II can actually be connected via USB-C and they have a monitoring port. There you can monitor live. But with the adapters shown in the video you have to be in a video app for monitoring to work.

Have you tried using Bluetooth headphones to monitor audio while a mic is connected in the lightning adapter? Sorry for commenting the second time but it's just been really bugging me because I'm in the same situation as you. From my results I assume that even though there's no headphone connected to the trrs adapter ( lightning adapter) the iPhone still assumes that the mic is a headset(headphones + mic) and if I do connect a Bluetooth headphone ( that doesn't have a built in mic) the lightning port overrides it.

I have found a workaround to this issue I believe. I use MoRec app(IOS and Android) to record and monitor the audio whilst using my camera or other app. MoRec boosts the audio and I simply add it back in during the edit. it may not be a simple fix, but a double clap to fix the audio start point will work every time in FCP and Reaper is my DAW so that's even better. I couldn't justify spending lots on dongles and cables for education purposes, but this way, most children will be matching audio at some point in I-Movie or FCP or Premiere. Hope this helps. What wasn't clear for me, was whether the splitter shown in the video will allow stereo recording and stereo monitoring with the headphones. Can anyone give a definitive reply to this issue. I would assume that this isn't just a mono setup, since it would seem that most people would want to record in stereo, but at this point, I'm not sure about this setup. It seems like he didn't mention stereo vs mono. Thanks!
@ricardojsgw
@ricardojsgw 2 жыл бұрын
The only problem with the TRS to TRRS setup is that it won't work for a stereo audio source because only one side of the audio source will be sent to the iPhone in both channels resulting in a mono recording. I found this when trying to connect a stereo synthesizer to the iPhone using the TRS to TRRS cable and the TRRS to Lightning adapter. Also, the line level output of the synthesizer is too high for the iPhone resulting in a distorted sound. You can lower the volume of the line level source but then noise to sound ratio will get too high. I guess this setup only works for low level mono microphones.
@ChrisSpiegl
@ChrisSpiegl 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ricardo, I have two thoughts for you: 1) absolutely right, the signal of line level is too loud. For that you could also use an attenuation cable like I have showed here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKq0f5WFn5eDrqs 2) in regards to the stereo signal: the only real solution there is to use something that acts as a USB-Interrface. For example the Røde Wireless Go II does make use of this to support recording two separated channels of audio into left/right. Maybe there are other audio interfaces you could use for that.
@ricardojsgw
@ricardojsgw 2 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisSpiegl Thanks for your reply. 1) After writing my comment I thought "why not use the low level headphones output of the synth or mixer?" I think that could work. I'll try it. And yes, the attenuation cable is an excellent solution. 2) The TRS to TRRS won't work but I think that by using the TRRS to TRS split cable you showed I can get the stereo signal into the microphone stereo input. I'll try that too. Thanks a lot!

@@ricardojsgw/videos From what I know the TRRS simply does not support stereo audio since it only has 4 connection points (mass, left, right, and mic). So guess you'll have to use the interface after all - if you need a stereo signal.

Thanks Chris, super useful info, this setup worked for me with a boya mm1 mic. (Lightning adaptor into two way trs splitter into headphones and mic via trs cable) however, if I take the same cable from the mic and plug it into my iPad to record the audio out from there, it doesn’t work! Tried SO many configurations of dongles and cables and adaptors (I have a whole bag full of them!) and the only thing that would even come close is using a ugreen usb A to audio in/out splitter out of the iPad (via a usb C to usb A adaptor) and plugging the audio in cable for the phone into that. This gives me pulsing intermittent signal from the iPad, obviously unusable but a signal non the less. Using this setting has some benefits: - you can charge your Iphone during filming :-) - on the Rode SC6 you can plug 2 mics if necessary (but not splitted in 2 channels) and you can monitor your audio with headphone :-) - the Rode SC6 is tiny in comparison to any splittercable :-) Note!!!: With Rode Videomic NTG you can't use the autosensecable directly plugged into the SC6 splitter (very bad audio!), you habe to use between SC6 audiosplitter and autosensecable a Rode TRS to TRRS adapter (SC4).

Hey Johann, thanks for sharing these details. So many adapters but I know the struggle. I like the setup and I have made other videos also showing parts of what you are sharing (specifically how to charge and use the mic port): kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKezaaB4ha-KmMk I think it's a bit sad that Røde didn't give an option to split the left and right for the SC6 adapter (a switch on the device would have been great to be able to decide to split or mix down). But there are also options for that I like to use: amzn.to/3p801BN (this gives me the option to use two mics at the same time and have them split to the left and right channel of my camera, however, then you need the headphone/mic splitter and also this one so that's one more adapter 🙈). First thanks for your video, it seems to be the only one I have found that offers a reasonable explanation of audio on the iPhone. I just upgraded to an iphone 14 Pro Max. This is a major step away from my Sony cinema cameras and Sennheiser wireless kits but it seems that it is also the way of the future. Here is a weird one: I have both a Rode video Micro and Rode Wireless Go II setup. When I use the version of Filmic Pro that I have had for a couple years, not the monthly subscription which I am sure would be about the same, I can monitor audio while shooting, have a vu meter and all is good. When I use the built in Camera App in Video or Cinematic mode I can record audio but cannot hear it/ monitor it while shooting. This is a deal breaker for me. So it seems odd to me with the exact microphone and adapter setup I use in Filmic Pro that the Camera app from Apple reacts differently with no monitoring. Any ideas?

@@ChrisSpiegl Thanks for the reply. But it looks like the TRRS splitter into the lightning adapter setup somehow degrades the stereo signal when it comes back on the monitor(headphones). As a result the stereo audio signal record alone works but in case of a video recording the audio monitoring cuts off every 1-2 seconds, making the sound unusable. Tested with multiple cables, same result. Probably this is an audio interface limitation of iphone signal-monitoring capabilities. Maybe newer iOS can't handle this scenario🤔
