In this video we take a look at how to monitor audio in Filmic Pro while using an external mic & headphones. It's not as easy as you might think! :)
UPDATE: See pinned comment on working with the RODE & Deity mics and the wireless headphones. Did some more testing and eventually got it to work.

UPDATE: Thanks to a few of your comments and some more testing I WAS able to get the RODE VideoMicro to work with the wireless headphones. Cool! What I did this time was connect the Rode mic FIRST, then open Filmic Pro - and THEN turn on the Bluetooth headphones. In this particular order. The other mics with the built-in Lightning connector you can just connect and go - and leave the Bluetooth headphones on all the time. But with the Lightning to 3.5mm adapter it seems you have to go in this order. So it's a bit of a finicky setup, but so far it does work (with the Deity mic as well). Will be testing more devices as well as some wireless mics too. Thanks! -BC

This is when you appreciate a 3.5mm audio input on your phone. There are many phones that still have them and are still waterproof. Let's hope the phone and phone gimbal makers, and also Filmic Pro, will work together when designing their products. They sometimes seem to live in a vacuum. We have to go through so much also to mount a mike, get the phone charged by the gimbal, configure the software, etc.

Hey great video! Thanks for the info! I’m using my Rode VideoMic as a wireless mic using my iPhone 11 and filmic pro app. My problem is whenever I switch to Bluetooth to monitor audio via my ear pod or headphones, filmic pro switches to 16 kHz and I want it at 48 kHz but it won’t give me the option to change it. Can you suggestion what I can do? Thanks Also, for a typical dialogue scene in short films, and I know situations make a difference but I’m still in a fog about what to set my gain levels. My mic had a manual one on the back of it. As a general rule, should I set it below 7 or 8 for outdoor scenes? Thanks again.

I solved it, and the order is not essential! The phone thinks you plugged in a microphone AND a headphone. Just switch your sound output to the Bluetooth headphone, and it will work. On iOS, go to the control center, tap on the blue ”radio tower,” and select your headphones.

I have found a workaround to this issue I believe. I use MoRec app(IOS and Android) to record and monitor the audio whilst using my camera or other app. MoRec boosts the audio and I simply add it back in durning the edit. it may not be a simple fix, but a double clap to fix the audio start point will work every time in FCP and Reaper is my DAW so that's even better. I couldn't justify spending lots on dongles and cables for education purposes, but this way, most children will be matching audio at some point in I-Movie or FCP or Premiere. Hope this helps. *Troubleshooting for Filmic Pro Android Users:* If you are struggling with getting Filmic to recognize your bluetooth headphones, it could be trying to use your USB-C adapter/microphone as an output device! There is a setting you can play with to try to change this; it helped me fix audio monitoring with an older version of Filmic. 1. Go to Settings/About Phone/Build Number 2. Tap the Build Number Panel continuously. A prompt will state that you are about to enable Developer Options. You should only have to tap it something like 5-7 times, and your phone will cheerfully inform you that you are now a developer. Think of this as the Android Power-User Konami Code. 3. Back out to Settings, and then go to Settings/System/Advanced/Developer options. Congrats, you're now part of a secret club. With great power comes great responsibility. Don't worry-you probably can't brick your phone-but maybe do a quick Google search before changing anything else that you're unsure about in here. 4. Scroll down to the Media tab. You'll find a setting that says "Disable USB audio routing." If it's not in the same place on your phone, feel free to use the settings search function (magnifying glass icon inside of settings). 5. Switch this to on. Don't forget that you changed this next time you try to plug in a pair of wired headphones! 6. Go to Filmic Pro, with your Bluetooth headphones paired and your microphone plugged in, and try to switch your audio source to your external mic. If it that worked, awesome. If it didn't, try a bit more tweaking. Like in iPhoneographers' pinned comment, sometimes you need to change the order in which you connect the devices. Try every order combination of A. Connecting headphones, B. Connecting external mic, C. Starting Filmic, and D. Attempting to switch its audio source. If all else fails, you weren't missing that much anyway. The 1 second latency is incredibly annoying and is a direct effect of Filmic's processing delay; that means low latency headphones don't help much. I tried. Please upvote for visibility!

Great video! I have a semi related audio question that you might be able to help with. I'm wanting to use my Zoom U22 interface to record into FiLMiC. I haven't bought the app yet because I want to make sure this is possible first. I'm wondering if stereo recording is possible with this app. I've read some places that it is and some places that it isn't. FiLMMiC's own documentation isn't clear and I'm not comfortable with paying the high price if audio is flattened to mono.
@DaimyoD0
@DaimyoD0 3 жыл бұрын
I can't speak for whether or not Filmic can accept a stereo signal through a USB-to-Lightning adapter used to connect the interface to your device. I would presume that it is at least possible to get a stereo signal in using other iOS apps, or else Zoom wouldn't readily advertise the U-22's iOS integration. I can confirm that Filmic *can* record stereo audio. Using the two built-in microphones at the top and bottom of my Pixel 3, it records stereo audio complete with distinct meters for each mic, and a single slider to adjust the level of both channels. Based on how much better support for Filmic Pro is on iOS than it is on Android, I would bet that any feature available to my Pixel 3 is also available to iPhones. However, seeing as I'm using a USB-C port instead of Lightning, and my external microphone is a shotgun mic, I have no way of meaningfully testing external stereo input.

I will try/test it out if there is a delay between LowLatency (AptX) and wired Monitoring...can not stand a delay when I have to Film a subject at the same time. In general I think a full over Ear Headset would be more suitable. I will test out my thick MemoryFoam ANC Headset :) Luckily using S9+Root...full 3.5mm Jack usable! Rode does often not include 3 to 4 Pin Adapter for those using 3.5mm Jack.

Good video, I have always found filmic to be a pain in the ass, so buggy it’s untrue. It seems after every update, there is another problem for me to fix. The latest one is when switching off automatic gain correction, I have no audio, any advice on how to get around this ? The only reason I use this app is because it has a remote facility.

Hmmm. Interesting! Are you on iPhone or Android? We report bugs to them anytime we come across them but haven’t had any as of late. Rock solid on an iPhone for a long time. Regarding automatic gain correction… Whenever using a microphone turn that off and set your audio manually. Otherwise leave it on, but if it’s turning off automatically would report that to Filmic Pro. support@filmicpro.com Hope you get it figured out!

Did you end up fixing it with a TRS->TRRS adapter? Most lightning->headphone adapters use TRRS pinning, and requires an extra adapter for mics that are TRS only.

Is there a way to use all 3.5mm? I have seen lightning dongles that have both headphone and mic inputs, but I can't tell if they input the mic and output to headphones at the same time so you can monitor in real time. Trying to get a sound setup using my existing 3.5mm shotgun mic and headphones.

You should absolutely make an update video to this specifically to include the Rode AI-micro since it has the option to live hardware monitor through it. It also auto-detects TRS and TRRS plugs so should “just work”™ for any mic with a 3.5mm jack.

I recently got an iPad Pro and bought a dock (hope I’m using the right words lol) to connect my Scarlett interface and when I record audio with my XLR mic, the audio sounds fine but only records in mono (can only hear the audio in left ear on headphones) and I have yet to find a solution besides exporting the audio alone and making it stereo with a third party application then pasting it back on top of my video. It’s not the worst thing, but definitely takes a lot more work than if it just recoded in stereo, I haven’t found anyone else with this issue, so I hope I can find a fix or more efficient option, thanks in advance for any help‼️🤞
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers Жыл бұрын
If you’re talking about a hub (or dock)… unless I’m misunderstanding, you don’t need that to go into a Scarlett. Just attach the Scarlett directly via USB-C. Then depending on the app you’re using you should be able to have it record in a mono mix (two channels). You can’t record in stereo because it’s not a stereo mic. Hope that makes sense!

I specifically dont want to monitor audio - I have a lightning to 3.5mm adapter then a splitter for headphones and a mic. I have a lav on the mic and want to listen to music. I have found an app that plays back music over recording with filmic and filmic doesnt record the music which is what I want. I only want filmic to record the lav, which it does but it also monitors the lav. Its annoying. What I'm trying to do is record karaoke songs on my motorbike. Recording using filmic and a lav in the helmet whilst another app play the backing track. Everything works fine apart from the voice mic monitoring with a slight delay making it like a speech jammer and hard to sing. Is there anyway to stop filmic pro from monitoring the mic audio? The stock app does but it doesnt give you the control that filmic pro does. Any help would be appreciated. :)

In the audio menu in Filmic Pro you can turn on video only but then that stops the audio from recording, so that isn’t your answer. You might have to use an external audio interface to pull that off? Hope you figure it out!

@@iphoneographers I figured. But, yeah, thanks. I've decided on recording the mic audio on a front facing gopro whilst keeping the handlebar mounted iphone forward. A separate recorder would be nice and/ or not having to clap sync stuff in the edit but hey ho.

Dear Sir, have you ever noticed that iPhone does not record STEREO audio with an external microphone? Neither native app nor Filmic Pro. Would you please comment, share your experience? Thank you!

Yes, it’s a limitation of the lighting port - however, with certain adapters like from RODE you can get split track into Filmic Pro, etc.

How do you get those audiobars on the right?
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 3 жыл бұрын
It's that way on any wider screen iPhone from the X or later. And any Android with the wider screen aspect ratio, too.

I'm using an Iphone 6S Plus, which is pretty wide. Maybe not supported on this model?
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 3 жыл бұрын
No, that’s 16x9. iPhone X and later are wider and support the different UI.

Thanks for the clip - but let’s be honest - it’s a mess with all these add-ons! Cables that work, headphones that won’t etc.😀

I find filmic extremely annoying, as it is only compatible with certain mics. Surely they can do better. Anyone used mix pre with filmic ?

Thanks. The mic itself works fine, so it’s the proper cable for that part of it... Could be an iOS setting though. Doing more testing.
