"Bad belt! Go to your room!"

What looks like belt quality issues could & likely is in part pulley alignment issues. Running belts on poorly aligned pulleys will prematurely cause belt deterioration. It's much easier to identify pulley alignment issues with a level if you can rotate the machine into the horizontal position. First the machine ( actually the tooling arm ) needs to be leveled & then you can check each pulley individually. If this seems too complicated I can stop by one day & help you with this as well as setting up your welder.

Just bought one. Thanks for the tips. Why can’t you just drill a hole in the arm closer to the belt to hold the platen?

Sure looks like your platen is the same width as the belt. Unlike the 1" set up which is wider than the belt. Be careful with that. It is very easy to catch the edge of the belt and shred it. I was lucky and the knife stayed in my hand but dam. I don't like this whole 2" edge leading make it up as you go set up. Other sharpeners will try and copy this and it might not turn out so great. *Danger*
