Episode 134 - Most consoles require you to obtain an official license to produce games for it and to meet certain quality standards. Not every publisher is willing to do that. So let's take a look at some of the games that were released without the license.

This is why I like Game Sack. On so many of their episodes (like this one) they cover games that I never EVER would have heard of otherwise. Best retro gaming show ever!

I'm surprised such an eloborate show like this is publicly free on the Internet, this should be a TV show with all the work you guys put into it. You guys are awesome, keep it up :D

GamingCompass The show is great for people interested in this topic, but it's a tiny special interest group. So on TV it would bomb and not survive the first Episode. That's why all shows on TV more or less look the same, as they try to go for the greatest common divisor. Wat deviates from the mainstream will (financially) not work. Same would be true with a good show about modern developments in quantum mechanics or mathematics ... some things are simply not mainstream compatible, no matter how good they are, which also has it's good sides: no dedicated Brony TV show until now.
@JeffCompass
@JeffCompass 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's completely true. I never looked at it from that perspective.

There's only about 4 million specialty cable channels out there. Have you seen how horrid some of the shows are that they give airtime to and continue on for season after season... This show could thrive if it found the right channel.
@frankschneider6156
@frankschneider6156 9 жыл бұрын
TooBokoo So you really think gamers are preferably just waiting to watch something on TV and don't prefer the internet ? Those specialty channel are primarily targeted at that aging and continuously shrinking target group. TV is in principle in the long run as dead as radio, newspapers, vinyls/CDs, DVD analog books and wrist watches.

I'm not saying that, I'm just saying, I don't think a show like this would necessarily fail, if given the right channel.

nintendoboy17 Well... it was meant to turn into "quality indicator" (see Nintendo's policy back then) after a while. And don't forget... Atari had no "seal of approval" and it's market was overrun by shitty games that's covers looked alike the ones Atari produced. At least Sega and Nintendo learned a lesson (and taught us) from 1983 in 1984. :D

Six String I think Capcom has a lot of them with the Street Fighter updates especially Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition. Also there is a Nicktoons game I haven't played (but I heard it is pretty good) that in the german version is known as "Action mit Spongebob Schwammkopf und seinen Freunden" (Action with Spongebob Squarepants and his friends) because Spongebob is the only well known Nickelodeon character in germany.

Dizzy was the star of a series of popular games from the late 80's/ early 90's, mainly on home computers such as the Spectrum, Amstrad CPC and C64. The character was created by The Oliver Twins. They were immensely popular with Treasure Island Dizzy probably being the best and most well known.

Tengen Tetris. Oh, did we get robbed by the courts on that one. I strongly prefer this version to the rather droll Nintendo version; the music is better, the stage breaks are enough to give you a breather, and the two-player option is underrated for the time. The Atari arcade game that it was based on always used to get a few tokens from me back then, too. Tengen's unlicensed games were generally at least decent. Vindicators was a lot of fun to play, and the RBI sequels were improvements to the original with better graphics and more teams to pick from. Road Runner and Super Sprint are fair; admittedly, I have a bit of a soft spot for Super Sprint since it was one of the first NES games that I bought after getting the the system. I'm going to keep a look out for Alien Syndrome now, thanks to Joe's Seal of Approval. I really enjoyed this video, guys-- you keep knocking them out of the park. Thanks for the hours of hard work, between capture sessions, script-writing, and filming. The end result always shows how much effort you put in!

I am legitimately blown away by Bee52's parallax effect, as it's the first instance of true multi-plane scrolling I have seen on NES, and I'm not talking about the games where they fake it, via line-scrolling (like in VICE Project Doom or GI Joe). Also - like dozens of people before me said - Dizzy might deserve another look... though probably NOT Treasure Island, as it's the most sadistic game in the series, giving you just a single life for the entire quest. I'd say, track down Dizzy The Adventurer or Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy on NES for a far better representation. Alternatively, try the more modern takes on the genre, like Spud's Quest, Wizzley Presto, or my own Mystik Belle.

Even though Game Sack has helped me (immensely) with my collecting over the years, and it is always of the utmost technical quality, I have to say that my FAVORITE part of every single Game Sack episode is the ending short skit. Joe and Dave have such perfectly rigid delivery and timing. I would like to be surprised some day by an extended sketch at the end of a future episode. They always make me laugh.

The Codemasters games were quite shallow because they were remakes of budget 8 bit computer games. The Dizzy games were released on the C64, Spectrum and Amstrad CPC and only cost £2.99 each. Full price games at the time were £9.99. They became really popular because they were pocket money priced.

Loved the show this week guys. By the way, Dizzy the egg was a pretty big mascot for Code Masters in the UK. ZX Spectrum owners loved Dizzy games. He also appeared on the Master System as well as other Euro home computer systems. can't say I'm a fan though. I've got a load of unlicensed Mega Drive cartridges myself. many of which were not featured on this show such as Rockman X3 or another 2D scrolling fighter similar to Shui Hu: Feng Yun Zhuan and let's not forget all the crappy 1 on 1 fighters such as Top Fighter or a really bad Dragon Ball Z game. Then there's a billion crappy platformers such as Bugs Life. You should check out my site, there's loads listed in the Mega Drive section - www.segagagadomain.com/

When I was a kid a friend and I had a ton of fun with Alien Syndrome! Also, Codemasters made another game we spent a good deal on for the NES called Micro Machines.

9:24 I like how you used the original PlayStation's slogan there. When I first saw the PS1 commercials, I thought it meant "You're naughty" until I realized it meant "You're not ready" because of the red "E". Maybe thats why Sony got rid of the slogan. But it suits this NES game well.

Nobody I knew had a Master System growing up, so those Tengen games coloured my view of what its games were about for years. I actually really liked them, especially Fantasy Zone & Alien Syndrome (enough to rent it twice, even), but the low quality programming made me think "This is what Sega people are making such a big deal about? Really?"

I'm not sure if someone already mentioned, but that genesis chinese game in the end, the one that is similar to Golden Axe and Knights of the Round, actually rips off not only the item mechanics from Knights of the Round. The three main characters are visibly a repaint of the original main characters from Knights of the Round (the shirtless guy is Arthur, the girl is Lancelot, the axe dude is Parcival), many of the enemies and a few of the stages are built the same way as far as I could see on the video. They did add a few of their own quirks though (the magic specials stuff), but apparently did away with the level up/armor up system of the original Knights game, which was awesome. Anyway, nice episode! :)

Tengen's RBI Baseball series was the BEST Baseball series during the 8 Bit generation and they were unlicensed. In fact, I had to get my Dad a NES clone (ended up with the FC-3 and it was so good I bought one for myself) so he could play them. He has been playing complete seasons every year since we got the 1st game back in 198whatever and keeping stats. Since my Mom passed away in 2012, it's what has gotten him through the fall and winter months that there isn't baseball on.
