From 3D platforming pioneer Super Mario 64 to the arcadey space battles of Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, the Nintendo 64 was flush with top notch titles that have been celebrated through the ages. However, we're casting them aside today in favour of that particular breed of game that is rarely spoken about, but that is still really good. A few of you might have heard of them, and might even have played them, but for the most part the following titles were overlooked when they were released, and are still overlooked now. Hopefully, we'll shine a light on something that escaped your notice. Here are 10 Hidden Gems For The Nintendo 64!

I feel like Goemon's Great Adventure should be on more of these lists. It's one of my favourite games on the system, which is saying something since when the N64 was good, it was _very_ good.

A few other really great ones I can think of: -Sin & Punishment: not exactly hidden with it being referenced in Smash Bros. and playable on the NSO service but it still isn't talked about nearly as much as it should be considering it's Treasure completely in their element with a high-octane, sci-fi rail shooter. -Mystical Ninja & Goemon's Great Adventure: the Goemon series unfortunately never stood a chance outside of Japan with Konami localizing so few of the games, which is a shame considering how fun and unapologetically wacky the series is. Both N64 games are great with a 3D adventure game and a side-scroller more similar to the previous entries. -Rocket Robot on Wheels: a really fun and charming collect-a-thon from a pre-Sly Cooper and Ghost of Tsushima Sucker Punch. Not quite Banjo or Mario 64 levels but definitely still worth a play.

Yeah, Goemon needs more love. I would also list the two Extreme G games, basically Mario Kart but with futuristic bikes and a great electronic soundtrack, and Wave Race 64.

The "Ogre Battle" franchise is literally called "Ogre Battle" because the developers were massive fans of Queen who had a song called "Ogre Battle". They also had a game called "Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen" which is actually 2 different Queen songs.

My personal hidden gem for the N64 was Hybrid Heaven. Yeah, it was clunky in places (like the platforming) and had some overly drawn-out boring bits, but at its best there was no experience quite like it on the N64- the fully-voiced opening cutscene with lip-synched dialogue, the vast and menacing alien base hidden under an American city, the chase sequence with the giant monster, the big plot twist that flips the story upside down, and the turn-based limb-targeting martial arts/wrestling combat system that is like absolutely nothing I've ever seen in any other game. Unfortunately I got a bit stuck at the end when I got badly lost trying to escape the alien base during the climax, and since internet guides were hard to come by at the time, I never actually managed to finish it. I should probably hook up the old black box and see if my save is still there on the memory card somewhere.

I was also tempted to mention Hybrid Heaven, but decided to give a shoutout to a different game instead (that being Flying Dragon). Hybrid Heaven was such a unique and interesting game, and was a breath of fresh air for an RPG fan like myself on a console that had practically none.

If you guys ever do Hidden Gems for the Original Xbox, I highly recommend Phantom Dust. You won't find many people who've played it, but the few who have swear by it as one of the best games they've ever played. It's an innovative amalgam of 3rd-person shooting and deck building. The art direction and setting is memorable as well. Dare I say it's THE hidden gem of that console. Best of all, the HD re-release is free on the Microsoft store.

Ogre Battle 64 is one of the best N64 games period, of all genres. Everything about it was perfect! I was playing that and body harvest and jet force gemini over almost every other n64 game. Lol

Novody ever seems to remember Hybrid Heaven. Its combat system is still _UTTERLY_ unique in the entire history of video games- turn-based martial arts/wrestling with limb damage and RPG elements that let you level up your limbs and your vast array of moves independently. How many other games let you put a claw-handed alien in a crucifix armbar? Trick question: NONE.

@@sonicguyver7445 That reminds me of a time my friend's sister was tired of us playing her Perfect Dark game, so the point where out of spite she snapped the brass connectors so the game would no longer work. Funnily enough, my friend and I decided to give it a try anyway, and the game still worked, which just further pissed her off. All she managed to do was cause the save data to delete (or at least make it so the game couldn't read it).

Beetle Adventure Racing was released in Australia, owned it then and still do now. HSV was released a little later I guess to try and push the sales of the game in Australia. -Also you mentioned how BAR is a lot like NFS for N64, well it actually is. According to Cutting Room Floor there are still small amounts of "NFS" left in the game ROM.

When my parents got me a N64 the very first game I've bought for it was Mischief Makers, I so wanted to play it after reading a preview in a gaming magazine. I wasn't disappointed, beautiful game. We N64 folks didn't have Metal Gear Solid, but Konami instead gave us a weird sci-fi brawler adventure called Hybrid Heaven; it had boring repetitive corridors, tons of the same turrets and traps you needed to deactivate with a gun, but the dopest part was entering a battle against a humanoid foe, where you could even learn wrestling moves to build your arsenal of combos as you progress through the story. Very weird, but unique gem, it helped that it was launched back in the Attitude era of WWE.

Ogre Battle 64 was phenomenal. Having played the original on the SNES, I remember reading about it in a gaming magazine, and being absolutely hyped for months leading up to its release. I even talked a friend into splitting the cost, and therefore ownership of the game, with me just to make sure I'd be able to have the money for it on day one. Bangai-O was also incredible, but as said suggested in this video, I was only familiar with it on the Dreamcast. I never even knew there was an N64 version until seeing it just now. As for obscure N64 games, a favorite of mine that wasn't on this list, but I feel fits the bill because I never hear people talk about it, was Flying Dragon. Not the deepest fighting game out there, but as a kid I loved it almost as much as Smash Bros, and spent hours upon hours grinding in single player to collect, and level up gear to then battle my friends.

I can't believe you had Buck Bumble on the list... and DIDN'T mention the music (best video game rap ever) and also the Buzzball multiplayer mode, which is basically Rocket League with bees. One hidden gem I think should have been mentioned is World Driver Championship. A realistic racing game with better graphics, physics and computer AI than Gran Turismo with only the lack of a licence for real life cars and tracks letting it down.

Man, I LOVED Bangai-O. I imported it and indeed played it on the N64 (also played it on the Dreamcast). The style of the game alone was awesome to me, but the insane bullet hell-like missles/bullets etc were some of the most fun I had holding an N64 pad to be honest. I'd love to see a remaster or just a straight re-release on current systems (I'm a PC gamer, but a Switch version for example would be amazing to see) but sadly I doubt that'll happen.

My biggest hidden gem for n64 is Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage. Is a huge rpg with a huge overworld, tons of character customization and tons of weapons and magical items to explore for. If you can bear the long battle system, theres a massive amount of content to enjoy in this game. Most people pass it up due to some handful of reviewers who gave the game a few minutes of their time telling them its a "bad" game, but its a super fun game thatll last you 50+ hours

Fascinating. I've never heard anybody give Aidyn Chronicles praise. Myself included, although not because I thought it was a bad game. I actually remember really liking the battle system, which basically took the Quest 64 battle system and made it good. Rather, I just really hated the permanent deaths, and how easy it was for your characters to get killed. That aspect eventually got on my nerves for a couple reasons, so I eventually just got sick of it before getting any further than like 10 hours in.

I remember I picked up Buck Bumble once upon a time from blockbuster, very strange game, back then it was OK, I used some cheat codes I think to see all the levels. That game is very impressive the more I think about it, they managed to pull of an impressive effort in the direction of what games like Toy Commander on Dreamcast and Katamari Damacy would end up doing so well, the latter a well known PS2 game utilizing far more powerful hardware.

My cousin had Beetle Adventure Racing and I played it with him and I was unimpressed. For a hidden N64 racing gem I would pick World Driver Championship as it had solid racing and the story mode and a neat feature where racing teams would try to get you to leave your current team and join them

I like Top Gear Overdrive on N64. Was a fun arcade racer and the soundtrack was awesome. I still have it but it's buggy in insane ways since my house got hit by lightning while I was playing it and corrupted the game. heh. Just made it more fun in my eyes.

The funny thing is that, because I read so many N64 magazines back in the day, I actually did hear about all these games when they were new (except for Bangai-O which I discovered a few years ago). 😆 Unfortunately the only ones I got a chance to play properly were Space Station Silicon Valley (one of my fave N64 games) and Buck Bumble (wasn't really a fan tbh). And the only one I have in any playable form right now is Ogre Battle 64 (because I bought it on the Wii U). Would love the opportunity to check out S.C.A.R.S, Beetle Adventure Racing and Mischief Makers though. Hopefully they get added to Nintendo Switch Online someday. Also, if you want to talk about 'review scores varying wildly' (as you did with Rakuga Kids) I'm pretty sure the Tom & Jerry game had scores ranging from 95% to about 30-40%. 😉

There's so many more under-appreciated N64 games that didn't even make this list. The Goemon games are big up there (Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon & Goemon's Great Adventure). Sin & Punishment deserves more love (It's now on Switch Online). I don't hear a ton of people talk about the N64 Bomberman games (Bomberman 64, Bomberman 64: The Second Attack, & Bomberman Hero), though Bomberman 64 gets some mentions. Chameleon Twist is good. Rocket: Robot On Wheels is very good. And I don't know if it's _that_ good, but I'll shoutout Tonic Trouble anyway. So many hidden gems! I also didn't know that Jet Force Gemini was considered a hidden gem, seeing as how Rare made it (you can even see posters for it in Banjo-Tooie). Mischief Makers is also toeing the line, but I guess it counts enough. Also, I like the box arts for those two games.

And featuring giant mecha battles with their own control system AND musical numbers on top of all that. I must confess- at times I felt that kooky game almost outshone Zelda, if only because Zelda didn't allow me to do punch-out battles with giant robots OR turn into a mermaid.

As far as I know, there are only three possible endings in Ogre Battle 64, and they are tied to the invisible Chaos Frame stat that only appears at the ending. I had to read some guides to understand it.

Im wrong there isnt over 5. Theres only 5 but theres 2 types. Good and bad endings and yes they do depend on your chaos rating at the end (chaotic, neutral, Lawful)

I owned Hybrid Heaven but i only played it once. I was too young to understand wtf was going on 😅 Only thing I remembered was the intro that had the US president and something about aliens. Took me almost 20 years to finally find out the name of the game
