That illegal contractor is a scammer, but his victims are to blame too. They wanted cheap labor and knowingly hired someone without a license. But didn't consider that such a person would most likely lack the skills to complete the work. And that business partner, Keisha Taylor, is probably the scammer's GF. He's using her checking account to deposit the payment checks, because likely banks won't let him have an account, due to bad credit records. It's a Vegas soap opera.

Never pay up front. Use a credit card for the transaction. You have some protection if the contractor double crosses you. Don't get suckered by someone telling you a cash discount. Cover your ankle. The site Next Door has been a hell of a medium exchange for neighbors to beware of shady contractors as well as to catapult the legit ones to getting more sales leads. Your neighbors don't hold back when they get fkd.

This doesn't work with reputable, well credentialed contractors. They get stiffed as much as customers of dishonest contractors. The best case is a contract with payment milestones. Check references. And you still can get screwed. Hiring contractors is a hassle. The best contractors are the ones who will solve the clients problems with little hassle. I managed properties for years and was always stressed trying to find good contractors. I had my fair share of firing them too. The most common case is when the job's so small, the reputable contractors don't want the job then you have no choice but to go with what you can get.

People here in Vegas all try to scam people, be the contractor or the client. The material cost money and labor is different from whatever material you need. Looks like she wanted a free closet, meaning she bought the material he has to load and unload but he wanted his labor up front. So that they didn’t turn around and say ( I’m not happy or the classic I got a hundred here and there) why didn’t they ask a company? I’m pretty sure the material and labor was triple. These are just cheap skates trying to hustle the working handy man. All a license does is give them permission to prosecute you. But in all seriousness Nevada is just a Martian state with outrageous law and state policies, only certain people can cheat you on labor. Get it in writing (contract). Put the triggers for increased costs (additional work not defined inside the contract) in the contract as exceptions that require a sign-off by both parties. If this contractor signed contracts, then he wouldn't have a leg to stand on in court. Look, I have several friends who are independent contractors and they've all had jobs where they had to take a loss because they didn't bid a job correctly. BTW: the 'here in Vegas' line doesn't work on me. The city doesn't matter. There ae contractors/clients in every city who want to rip-off the other side.

Well contractors charge a 20 percent fee after it’s all done. Yes it’s worth it to make sure your project is done right. But a lot of regular people can’t afford the fee. That’s why is a grey area for non licensed companies. Only the upper middle class can afford a licensed contractor.

Because I looked up his contractors license. So they are partly at fault for not doing their due diligence and giving so much money upfront.

If you are doing a kitchen go to Lowes or HD and get a free kitchen design first that shows outlets, drains, vents, then use drawings to get contractor bids to do the work. Then order the cabinets or your dime and you take possession of plywood cabinets, sink, faucet at your home. Hire contractor to install wiring, plumbing, venting and then your cabinets you can give them a small draw for screws and materials under $500, pay them when completed, no halfway payments, pay with credit card. Then hire a counter co for cutting and installing counters. or do the job yourself

You are clueless! License contractors can't bail! They all have bonds! If they bail , bonds will cover your losses and they will have to pay back to bond while loosing their License. On top of all that, they can face a 10k fine and jail up to a year. Bond ties to their social security number. Bond companies always get their money back with interest!
