sking0369 Voodoo with Will Whiteside at the controls was third from the poll and quickly jumped into second behind Strega at the start of the race, just before going around pylon 4 on lap 4 Voodoo's engine broke a valve, Will used his speed and turned it into altitude so he could position himself for a mayday landing on runway 14.

thats a pilot. He remembered the most important thing fly the damn plane.
@Voodoo165012 жыл бұрын
Even though the valve broke the engine builders had put keepers on the valves for just this reason, this kept the vlave head from droping down into the cylinder and destroying the engine completly.
@Voodoo165012 жыл бұрын
Hi leokov, You are correct, during the climb he pushed over into a little negative G and the fuel vented out of the small vent out towards the wing tip.
@sking036912 жыл бұрын
Thanks for replying. I noted his climb to altitude trading off his airspeed, thought that was neat. In fact the whole vid was awsome, found my heart racing as I was watching.

I was there...He had the saddest look on his face when the emergency crews and I got to him. It took hours of coaxing and a couple beers to lighten his mood. It wasn't his fault. Everyone has their bad days.

+Kirk Petersen Tell me you got pictures of this!!! ;-) At least he did a phenomenal job piloting! :-)

+Sean Hollingsworth Well the good thing is he was racing again last year...You should have seen Miss America crash, she's also a p51D Mustang it was bad but the pilot survived
@ArchTeryx004 жыл бұрын
It was in no way his fault. Racing engines always operate on the edge; this was a minute flaw that became a failure point. He did EVERYTHING right, including saving the plane (and more importantly, himself!) with an absolutely textbook engine-out landing. Will Whiteside should have been proud of himself, not so despondent. They ought to show this video in flight instruction classes as to how to deal with an engine emergency in flight.

Hi thresher4, No Bob didn't put the plane up for sale due to the accident, he was actually going to retire in 09 but that didn't happen then it was going to be 2010 but the winds stopped the final race so he said 2011 would be it.

@AlanMartinNala Hi Alan, The Gold heat race on Friday is 6 laps, Saturday it’s pushed to 7 and then Sundays Gold final is 8 laps, the course is 8.433 mile long and it doesn’t take them long to get around at the speeds they’re going. Depending on the size of the Unlimited field they usually run 6 to 8 planes in a race.

Hi shane607384, The numbers on the upper left hand portion are IAS in mph on left, GPS in mph on right and G-force on the bottom. We go by the IAS due to the fact that when the plane is in a turn the GPS antenna drops some of the signal and it gives sporadic data.

No, I don't think so. When you see him slide forward it is an illusion. He slid the canopy back, and the camera was mounted on it.

Did you make it to the races this year? Strega and Voodoo sure put on a show. Too bad September Fury blew the engine up so you didn't get your other showdown, but at least the Bear was flying, if a bit slowly.
@tomcatdrivergypsy10112 жыл бұрын
P.S. I really missed that purple, yellow, and green Mustang mixing it up with Strega this year. I think it would've been a great contest. And I hope that if in fact Voodoo makes a return, Strega will too come back for the Big 5-0 before Tiger calls it quits. I want to see an epic Gold showdown between 1.) Voodoo and Strega and 2.) September Fury and the Bear. :) Cheers.

ADMIRABLE footage, among other reasons because until now I have never had the chance of watching one of these races from an onboard camera. Besides, since I don´t live in the US, there are a number of things that I still don´t know about these races, such as: how many laps do pilots have to fulfill? How many participant on average per race? Around ten maybe?

hah, nice. Seems like you hear the engine rpm raise just a little bit as he passes the black air craft. Is that the straw that broke the camels back so to speak?

@aglandcattleman Once he drops down and passes the Tigercat and the camera switches to the wing view, he then comes up on the P-51 Mustang 'Merlin's Magic', he then passes the other Tigercat just before the engine lets go.

I added a link in the description to the 1998 Voodoo trim tab accident, this one was bad but the plane went straight up and didn't roll into the ground like Galloping Ghost did.

@Frotax Frotax No, Bob stopped racing in the late 90's, not long after the trim tab incident that almost killed him, the pilot in this video was Will Whiteside, hew flew Voodoo for a few years before Steve Hinton took over

Hi there, I saw this reply in regards to Voodoo being up for sale, and I was wondering if you knew anything about this rumor I heard that a couple weeks ago, Voodoo had been sold! Can you confirm this as true or false and/or if it will meet an unfortunate fate like Dago or will be raced again?

When the motor stops, your brain immediately starts doing a bunch of math even if you don't realize it. You need a new solution. Trade speed for altitude, of course. Then do the curves in your mind.

great video, for once i do "understand" this "event" - so the glide od this Mustang seems "human" ( kind of...) no the best sailplane ever built but still a real aircraft able to reach the tarmac - weel done ! ( from this purple machine other very intersting videos available - wih anothjer break done - pilot pulling then for altitude to convert for another glide nose down for safe landing - an ecoligical demonstration for speed is life and height can be speed - ) bravo !

@Voodoo165011 жыл бұрын
We actually broke a valve on this flight, the engine builders had put keepers on the valves so if they broke the parts would not fall into the cylinder and destroy the engine. Will had enough engine left to get him over the threshold and make a safe landing.
@SeanHollingsworth8 жыл бұрын
+DerbiSenda12345 Really 'easy' to fix!! All you have to do is throw money at it . .tons and tons of money! ;-)
@charlesr52108 жыл бұрын
Yeah. But those engines are almost like dragster engines. They are tweaked to make gobs of power at the expense of reliability. There's also a reason why part of the circuit goes over the runways. If there's an emergency, they can climb up into a pattern similar to a military flame-out pattern and nurse their sick bird home as gently as possible.
@martin090919898 жыл бұрын
how dose thes keepers work? I cant imagine how ! Is there another lighter spring further down on the shaft, and a braking point above it? This would make the valve train much more heavy. How high do this engines rev?
@pauleyplay6 жыл бұрын
Keepers ? Valve breaks, at the least the head is banging around the cylinder. What am I missing ?
