The "haven" in Newhaven is actually also a sea word! It's cognate with German 'hafen' and Dutch 'haven' meaning harbour - So really it's New Harbour harbour.

Hence the saying "Any safe haven in a storm", I get the impression that a haven is a sheltered place such as The Downs or Torbay and may not be a harbour.

How many other stations were built because of a washed up whale ? Norman's Bay - The whale washed up on the 13th Nov 1865 and weighed approx 72 tons ( the skeleton resides at The Nat History Museum in Cambridge ). The Brighton Railway Co created a temporary halt to meet public sightseeing demand.

Public information announcement: If you are catching the ferry from Newhaven to go to Dieppe, alight at Newhaven Town not Newhaven Harbour. If you do get out at Newhaven Harbour by mistake, exit the station on the East side and follow the road North for 10 minutes, walk past Newhaven Town station and cross the railway at the level crossing to gain access to the ferry ticket/boarding office. My wife and I found this out the hard way! Great video again, thank you.
@sarahj8231
@sarahj8231 5 жыл бұрын
To leave the train for the ferry at Harbour you also have to ignore the information on the ferry website, posters at stations, notices on the train info boards, messages on the train, and often announcements from the on board staff, and even when told in person by on board staff to go, 'are you sure', and then ignore them as you know best.
@bertoltb1358
@bertoltb1358 5 жыл бұрын
sarahj8231 But the ferry booking site via a phone didn’t mention it, the ticket machine at Brighton really didn’t care, the only station sign about it we could see on the return journey was at Lewes (We really had a good look for them), the dot matrix departure board was too busy, if there was an announcement we didn’t hear it and when they checked our ticket nothing was said. Yes we got it wrong, but we didn’t get a lot of help to put us right.
@sarahj8231
@sarahj8231 5 жыл бұрын
Bertolt B13 there is a poster on the platform at town, the route map on the train and at stations that shows the ferry running from town, and doing ticket checks the staff often have to guess if your going for the ferry. And when told the reply is often ‘are you sure’

Ahhhhhh, this takes me back to the mid 80's where there was "Network SouthEast Day", where for a tenner (10 quid) you could travel anywhere in the Network Southeast network all day, 12:01am to 11:59PM. I would be out on a train at around 6am from Portsmouth, to London, spend the day exploring the underground trains, and have it planned so I get on a train that gets to Salisbury and change trains for the Cardiff to Portsmouth before midnight which If I remember was at about 11:45PM, the last Cardiff to Portsmouth. Once you were on the train, the ticket was valid all the way to Portsmouth. Those were the days.

I’ve bought these tickets a couple of times (starting from Victoria). The first time I was initially planning just to visit Chichester (for a theatre trip and a wander round the city) where an off peak day return would have set me back £31.50 without a Railcard. I ended up having a wonderful day out visiting Arundel and Portsmouth too. One thing to point out is that these tickets don’t work in any ticket barriers which can be a bit frustrating. I also wasn’t able to collect it from a machine at Victoria and had to queue up to get it from the ticket office, but I think there were general problems with their self service ticket machines at the time. Thanks for a great video Geoff!

On reaching Cooden Beach by way of that long walk on the shingle from Normans Bay Halt I'm surprised you didn't call in to the Cooden Beach Hotel adjacent to the station for a well earned cuppa! BTW you could have had some background music "Sussex by the Sea"

The ticket has some evening restrictions too, although Southern aren't entirely sure exactly what they are (see twitter.com/SouthernRailUK/status/1180404710689390594?s=09 - perhaps someone here can help?). It can actually be cheaper than a return. For example, I often travel from my home in Haywards Heath to visit my Nanny in Leighton Buzzard. The fare (via Kensington Olympia and with my gold card discount) is £22.30 - for two Southern services, changing at Clapham Junction. While some ticket splitting is possible at weekends, a DaySave is more convenient (and still cheaper than the "standard" return).

Train admin is insane in the UK; there should be - scan bank cards, travel on any train, no peaks, slashed prices, capped prices, non profit, no exec wages, environment congestion budget used etc

GWR has travel cards and you can take one and you get unlimited travel for a whole day between a station and London Underground zones 1-6 for just £1.

I notice the siding into Newhaven Marine had a bar across with a red lamp which rather indicates it isnt used anymore. Of course, its raison d'etre, as a boat train terminus, rather declined in the 60s (due to RoRo ferries) and furthermore when they opened the Chunnel. Quai Henri IV in Dieppe disappeared many moons ago along with the fast rail link to Paris. So heres a thought - how many former Boat Train terminii still exist? (Littlehampton for one). Another thing station wise from your video - whats the remotest station from the town its supposed to serve. ?

Mm enjoyable and of course now in 2022 the early train stock shown (class 313) is officially the oldest still in regular use on National Rail and must soon be up for replacement.(Only the Bakerloo 1973 tube stock, still trundling on, is older!!) Best wishes.

I am wondering. Why is Bexhill-on-Sea only Bexhill your map? I think it's because it's unambiguously, unlike Durrington near Stonehenge. So you missed Bexhill-on-Sea which is a pity.

If it's not valid even on Thameslink (or, I presume, Gatwick Express), then what is the point of them all being lumped together in one gigantic mega-franchise?

They're all just owned by the same company. Thameslink, GX and Southern are basically still separate as they haven't merged yet.

Someguy, they have merged as the only TOC is GTR. Thus, legally speaking, the ticket is valid on all GTR services

I live in Portsmouth and Daysave used to be the cheapest ticket to get to London - no need for multiple stops. But around 7-8 years ago it got more expensive than an off-peak return so I haven't used it since. Looking at Southern's website I see I need to book at least 3 days in advance. And because I'm not starting at a Southern station the ticket would have to posted. That needs 5 days! Still, at least they make an effort, unlike SWT/SWR which is a rip-off however far in advance you book!

Having to have this posted to you is absurd… Basically makes this ticket pointless for all but the least spontaneous people in the world… Sounds like they had to legally offer this, or made it deliberately hard to buy for the sake of a promotion they wanted to look good, but not really have purchased very often… Kinda like some required tourism board marketing collaboration, that they were required to participate in…
