People freak out if you mention nor having pets is a frugality strategy, but it’s absolutely true. Food, meds, grooming, vet bills all add up quickly. She’s not saying you can’t have one, just understand it’s going to cost a lot of money.

Depending on where you live, some pets pay for themselves or are super cheap after the initial purchase. For instance, if you can have chickens, they will eat bugs in your yard, including ticks, can eat most kitchen scraps and will reward you with eggs. Do it right, and the amount you save on eggs is more than what you spend on feed. Rabbits are a really cheap pet. You can feed them some kitchen scraps as well as grass, some branches, weeds, etc. They can be trained to walk on a leash and use a litter box. My rabbit will be 10 this year. I've bought 1 50 lb bag of rabbit food per year.

Here's a few of my favorite tips: To cut back on laundry, especially for people with children: assign each family member one or two color-coded bath towels and their own towel hook. They are responsible to hang their towel up as soon as they get out of the shower and dry off. They can reuse their towel several times before washing.(As a professional house cleaner I am shocked how many people own dozens of bath towels and each child will shower once, throw their towel on the floor, and before you know it there's a pile of 20 towels needing to be washed. My grandma taught me: whenever you're baking something in the oven use that opportunity to throw in a few potatoes to bake alongside whatever you're making. Then you can have potatoes in the fridge for hash browns or twice baked potatoes etc. Also, I always put my overripe bananas in the freezer to be used in smoothies.

Batch cooking is the way to go for our household. When good hamburger is on a super sale I will buy the limit. I then fry up the meat and put it into my crockpot with onions and taco seasoning and let it slow cook all day. I then divy it up in meal size bags and put in freezer. We have tacos, taco soup, taco salad for several months ready to go. I also do this with making sloppy joes and having it ready when we want them. The slow cooker gives them an added richness.

Superb list! I second the no pet policy. As someone who teaches frugality, it is perpetually shocking to find that folks who are constantly at risk of being unable to pay rent, purchase basic food, etc will have 2 or 3 or 4 pets. I know they can be a comfort, but area they more comfort than knowing your children will have food on the table, clothes to wear or prescriptions? When all of my children were still at home, especially teenaged boys, I learned which day the butcher at my local grocery store marked down meat. I went right after kiddos left for school and purchased the marked down items that we would use. The average savings was 55% and up to 80%. I then returned home, batch cooked and froze. Libraries! Oh my heavens they can be a resource of invaluable benefit. Our library system has ‘Makerspaces’ in every branch. (I know, we are fortunate). The space has available everything from 3D printers to laser cutters to sewing machines and all those devices you would purchase and maybe soon ignore. Add in the activities, groups, classes and, of course, online offerings and they are a hub of entertainment and education possibility. Thanks for the list of libraries offering non-resident cards! Oh, our library has an agreement with the ‘next door’ jurisdiction. We can get a library card without living in that county and that card then links to the largest city library system. Great video!

Your comments about Dunkin resonate with me completely. I was a total Dunkin fanatic, but not only is it expensive, lately it just hasn't lived up to snuff. I was there this week and everything I got was disappointing.

Sorry, I may be in the minority here but I agree with your comments about pets. Too many people take pets on and then when they can't afford them they bring them to the animal shelter or some worse let them go in the streets. I agree, if you can't afford a pet, don't get a pet. Some of my kitties are amazing vermin and rodent “hunters.” They also keep me sane and give me daily purpose and routine. Their entertaining antics and their wondrous feats and their cuddly affection. What they teach me about life and love. I think I’d go crazy if it was just me alone all the time here without them. Of course our situation is more or less like stray and feral and barn cat setup. My little wild ones would not fare well as indoor only cats. So funny tho. When summer hits I suddenly want picnic food like hot dogs or shrimp cocktail or BBQ or cold, juicy sandwiches or cold fruit on a hot summer day. Ice cream and shakes etc. Then when winter comes I go back to other “comfort foods.” But often I skip the buns etc and just eat the dogs (beef franks for me lol) with a bit of mustard. Usually chips or tater tots with. Lol. The grocery sales are usually on point also with the seasonal changes. So it works for me. Lol. I don’t want a shark or a Dyson. Lol. My little dirt Devil vibe is the best vac I’ve ever had. (Usually under $50 and lasts me for years even with a bunch of cat dander). So if it ain’t broke don’t try to fix it. I also find a very cheap broom and dustpan is very effective most days.

I feel ya. For me it’s how they say I have too many cats. Well they may be right or they may be wrong. But if you really pay attention, you soon realize how much they help you. Such is the case with me also. 😊 I can say tho that I’m at my limit tho. I can’t deal with more at this time. But I’m keeping the ones I have. (It’s not like you could easily adopt them out anyways once they’re not “cute little kittens” anymore). They call it the cat mafia and it’s kinda true. Once you’re in you’re in for life. But what can I say? They have my heart. It’s like having kids. You have them and get to know them and bond with them and it changes you and you can’t seem to help but to love them forever. I still do SOME counseling also tho Bcuz my fam is hella toxic.

I repurpose clothing or fabric, that is in very good condition, I am currently making an apron for a cousin and have made my own cloth napkins, Leftovers become casseroles, or fillers for my eggs at breakfast. I've an electric stovetop so when my food is almost done I turn off the stove put the lid on the pan, put a hot pad over the lid and a dish towel over that to keep the heat in to finish cooking with residual heat.

😂..'don't bring your husband shopping with you'. I can totally relate! My husband always adds more to the cart and spends more money than l do! When he does come shopping with me, I will usually take some of the things out he puts in and not buy them..

It's interesting how people get offended when you mentioned pets... don't they realize you only making suggestions? We have 2 dogs and are saving up for a kitten. We're buying cat food and litter and going to be ready when she comes home. The key is planning and saving, and still paying down debt pretty well.

I was going to the grocery store for something. I got a soda. Instead of getting a cold 20 oz bottle for $2.39. I got a 1 litter bottle of the same soda for $2.19. My kitten hurt his leg. The vet bills for meds and operation. On top of medical bills. Put me in a debit till Dec. 24.

I would love to have another little dog, but there is no way I can afford it. Rent in Florida is outrageous. So I see what you mean about pets being expensive.

I do this and dang the savings add up. If anything I bought was on sale I would take that saving and save it. My beloved neighbor taught me this. She used the saving to pay for airline tickets for her g babies. Paying for 3 g babies airline tickets 2x a year that is some saving!

So many people have more than one pet. I think people in a money crunch should be satisfied with one pet. Pets enjoy being the center of attention and not having to share everything. Another thing I've noticed is overspending on grandchildren. I heard one man who was coming out of bankruptcy say he tried to save but the wife spent it all on the grandchildren. It seems like a noble thing to do, but not when you're in debt or needing to keep from being in debt. Use some common sense, people.

We lost our dog 🙏2 years ago and Hubby wants another one badly. We literally lost thousands replacing ruined Carpeting, Vet Bills, Pet Insurance, Groomers, Kennels, and Dog Food. It totaled over $12,000. Being retired on limited income, there is no way we can have another pet, even if I wanted one. Good thing we don't have Grandkids.....

It is horrible for a pet not to get treatment it needs when it needs it. Pets are great but if money is tight, foster instead. Everything Is paid for and you still get the love or a furry bestie.

How do you freeze milk?
@jennyeagan1840
@jennyeagan1840 3 ай бұрын
Have found this easy. Took some senior citizens tips, the generation that lives through the Great Depression. For me, I portion off, and a pinch of salt. Have received milk passed through several hands from food pantries and have frozen my milk off this way. Some of the milk I use immediately, but have concerns, so, a pinch of salt. Recently, purchased a yogurt maker for my morning smoothies. And the yogurt pamphlet states the converted milk/yougurt can last up to two weeks. Both the pinch of salt and yogurt methods of preserving milk have been game changers.
