I’ve played around with this some more and the zebra setting I like most is now 75. I think 80 is slightly overexposed and 85 is definitely overexposed. Unless I’m using zebras wrong? I go until the zebras disappear. Correct me if I’m wrong but if I left a slight amount of zebra stripes I’d have to go even lower, to 70. So I really think 85 is overexposed. Maybe for your indoor lighting 85 works best. But again, even indoors I find 75 is spot on. I will say it could also depend on skin tone. A dark complexion could require more exposure. You got a nice tan? 😁 So what’s the catch? Leaving room for grading I assume? Do you have a how-to video on grading? I’m a DIY learner so I’m not confident I’m doing everything right.
@seandewispelaere3 жыл бұрын
Hey Derrick, in short, I agree. Check out my “How I Expose Using Zebras” video as it might shed some light on this. I think 75-80 is the way to go for lighter skin tones and I’ll be making an update to this video soon. Thanks for checking out the channel 🤙

Hi Sean. My first watch of your videos. Great content, and I have subscribed. I look forward to testing out your 85% exposure settings. The old school advice I have always received is to go with 65-70, which has worked well as a starting point for video with my a7r2, but I have the s3 now to try out. Another thing you might be interested in is around detail. I know there is a lot of talk about dropping detail for a cinematic look. I shoot product video for a high end women’s shoe brand, @habbot, and always add sharpening in post - it can be a bit rough on skin tone, but makes the detail of the shoes really pop. I look forward to watching more of your content. Thanks mate. Dan

How do you think these results will translate to an outdoor natural light setting as opposed to your controlled studio setting?
@seandewispelaere3 жыл бұрын
I just ran a fair amount of outdoor tests to be able to get back to you on this. That said, I still found that 85% is the best option for skin tones in my opinion. For a subject, I'd ay that you'll have to weigh out what parts of the shot you want blown out if any depending on the lighting situation. For most things, I typically aim to get the subject exposed properly and deal with whatever is blown out from there if I am unable to manipulate the lighting. That said, 90% for the subject vs 95% would be fine and maybe even ideal if the lighting forces you into that scenario.
