My name is Dr Jamboor Vishwanatha PhD. I'm the principal investigator of the National Research Mentoring Network, a program that is housed in The Institute for Health Disparities at The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth. Mentorship plays a crucial role in everything we do at the Institute. It's a guiding light for us to make sure we properly aid and encourage our students as they navigate their academic and professional journeys.
Mentoring is like coaching. You want to try to help people realize their best selves and their best performances Your mentee knows in some way what they're needing in their career and to get to their dreams and goals. So if you take a beat and ask them what it is they want, and just take the time to listen, that investment will have a tremendous impact on that mentee's future.
It's about taking my lived experiences, taking the bumps, the heels and the valleys, the good times and the bad times, and conveying that to someone who might go through the same experience.
Good mentors provide guidance to their students. But great mentors provide guidance, support, encouragement and valuable insight from their own experiences. They are not afraid to walk their students from beginning to end. Mentorship fosters personal and professional growth to help students achieve their goals and build both confidence and resilience.
Our faculty members at HSC have been instrumental in shaping the academic and professional trajectories of countless students. They find the time to make their students a priority and are dedicated to not only imparting knowledge, but also serving as role models and advocates. They also create an environment that fosters a culture of excellence and inclusivity.
When I mentor a student I always put myself into their position. So when I teach, I feel like "if I were them" how should I convey the knowledge to them. And I always think it's better to be honest than defensive. So the first thing I tell them (is) that I don't know everything. So if I don't know, I'll find the answer, but that should not stop you from asking questions.
I think as a mentor you have to be very transparent and really just show yourself and the struggles that maybe you had as a young person in your career. And (then) help that person that you're mentoring see that it's okay to be vulnerable that it's okay to not know everything. I really credit my success to the programs that Dr Vishwanatha has offered me a spot in to participate.
During the past decade, we have implemented various mentorship programs and initiatives aimed at providing students from under-represented backgrounds. With access to mentors who can relate to their experiences and offer tailored support and guidance.
The next generation of individuals, who do what we do, requires a mentor. It requires them to be able to see how great science has been done. It requires him to think about the new challenges of the science. And of course, without your input in your role as a mentor, we cannot train the next generation. Representation in mentorship matters more than many people realize. Having a mentor, that they can relate to, helps students celebrate their diversity and allows us to embrace the unique perspectives and experiences of all Health Science Center students and faculty members.
