How did these two epiphanies land with you?

The relative pitch and building blocks idea helped me to join the dots. Like you I had learned instructions on scales major, minor, augmented, diminished etc but I drowned in letter names and although I understood it theoretically I couldn't make it work practically. For example all my solos were uninspiring to put it mildly. But when I thought of the function of the I, IV and V suddenly doors opened in my mind.
